SDR are open to striking a deal, but sources tell Get French Football News that they are seeking €20m including bonuses to conclude a sale. The newspaper notes that the player’s entourage have considerable wage demands for their player, which risk putting off a number of suitors, even the very wealthy ones.

Aside from Rennes and Wolves, who are both engaged in active discussions to sign the French talent, L’Équipe report that Southampton and AS Monaco have now joined the race and have activated talks.

The Saints have actually been in conversations with the player’s representatives for several weeks already, with them unconvinced about their capacity to attain a work permit for Ghanaian central defender Mohammed Salisu, who they also like.

AS Monaco in the meantime have entered conversations more recently, in the last few days in fact, immediately following the arrival of Paul Mitchell as the club’s new Sporting Director.

Reims want €20m including bonuses for the player, and owing to the enormous interest, have never been more confident about achieving that sum for a player with just 12 months remaining on his existing deal.

Official | Montpellier sign Stephy Mavididi from Juventus for €6.3m

Ligue 1 side Montpellier have this morning announced the arrival of 22-year-old English striker Stephy Mavididi on a permanent deal from Juventus.

Mavididi first discovered Ligue 1 during the 2019/20 campaign, spending a season-long loan with Dijon. He did not leave on good terms, with club president Olivier Delcourt angry that the player asked him not to activate their option to buy him because he wanted to return to England.

Mavididi comes in to support existing enigmatic duo of Andy Delort and Gaëtan Laborde in the Montpellier attack, having scored 8 goals and delivered 2 assists in 28 matches in all competitions for DFCO last season.

Juve have announced that they will earn €6.3m in the deal, payable in three instalments. Mavididi is capable of playing central or on the wings.

MHSC President Laurent Nicollin reacted to the deal:

“It is a source of satisfaction to sign an additional striker of the top level which is what the coach wanted. I hope that our attacking duo will manage it well and will become a wonderful trio. Aside from that, it is of course up to the coach to find the right formula, playing with just one, two or three up top. What is for sure is that this signing adds quality and potential to the team.”

City Football Group now in talks to buy ESTAC Troyes instead of AS Nancy in Ligue 2

L’Est-Eclair report that the City Football Group, who own Manchester City and a handful of other football franchises worldwide, are now in talks to acquire Ligue 2 side ESTAC Troyes, having appeared to step back from a quasi-imminent purchase of another French second division outfit, AS Nancy Lorraine.

The Abu Dhabi-backed organisation has turned definitively away from buying Nancy, after talks were suspended before COVID-19 hit.

An intermediary for City Football Group has approached ESTAC Troyes President Daniel Masoni about a possible sale. 4 years ago, the club was due to be sold to American investor Gary Allen for €3m, only for the deal to collapse at the last minute.

The outlet goes on to suggest that local authorities in Troyes view a potential acquisition of the club by City Football Group as a good thing, with the club being valued at between €7m to €10m, following their most recent audition with the French football financial watchdog, the DNCG.

City Football Group’s most recent acquisition was the purchase of Belgian 2nd division side SK Lommel.

Manchester City, Juventus & Arsenal interested in Houssem Aouar – L’Équipe

L’Équipe claim that Arsenal, Manchester City and Juventus all retain an interest in 22-year-old French attacking midfielder Houssem Aouar, who will face the latter side in the Champions’ League Round of 16 2nd Leg tonight.

Pep Guardiola adores the player, but elected to sign Ferran Torres from Valencia earlier this summer – this doesn’t rule out the possibility of a deal, but perhaps makes it more unlikely.

OL are seeking to earn at least €60m in order to part with the player, but in the COVID-19 market, that could be tricky. The teams that are interested in him are waiting until the end of the Champions’ League to know more about how they intend to operate in the market.

Under contract with OL until 2023, Aouar has been key a pivotal moments in 2019/20 for the club during the Champions’ League campaign. A major performance against Juventus tonight would likely boost his market value.

Aulas would be open to keeping the player if the offers aren’t there, but OL ideally want to sell.

ANALYSIS | RB Leipzig 0-3 PSG – how Tuchel outfoxed Nagelsmann from the start

On Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig faced each other in the Champions’ League semi-final. While it was the first time in 25 years that the French outfit reached this stage of the competition, this semi-final was a first for the German side. A dominant performance gave the perennial French champions their first ever trip to the final of European football’s biggest competition.

Lineup

With Ángel Di Maria coming back from suspension and Kylian Mbappé finally being fully fit, Thomas Tuchel had more options to begin the game with. However, Keylor Navas and Marco Verratti were injured and not fit to start. The German coach opted for a 4-3-3 with Neymar as a False 9, a similar setup to the Atalanta game. Mauro Icardi and Pablo Sarabia got benched, Mbappé and Di Maria starting the game instead. Leandro Paredes took Idrissa Gueye’s place in midfield but the rest of the squad was unchanged.

PSG’s high press to prevent Leipzig to play their game

PSG adopted a high press against Atalanta and they decided to keep the same strategy against Leipzig. Leipzig rely a lot on being fluid in move construction to create chances and to have the confidence in what they can do. This was seen against Atlético Madrid where they had time to find teammates in between the lines and combine in tight spaces. PSG’s high press nullified their fluidity as they often had to go long instead of circulating the ball from one side to the other, waiting for the space to attack into.

Neymar was PSG’s most important player in that regard, leading the press with 25 pressures applied, the most throughout the game. For someone who was rightly called lazy off the ball last season, the Brazilian has definitely changed this mentality this campaign, and for the better.

Not only did they force Leipzig to go long, PSG also capitalised on their high press as they brought Péter Gulácsi, Leipzig goalkeeper, to make mistakes. In the 6th minute, Mbappé scored after Neymar recovered a long kick from Gulácsi. The Brazilian did so with his hand, therefore the goal was disallowed. However, PSG did capitalise with this strategy on their second goal, highlighted below.

Each PSG man was in close proximity with a Leipzig player, preventing Péter Gulácsi from progressing the ball on the ground and centrally, therefore forcing him to either play a long ball or a difficult along-the-ground ball in a wide area. Gulácsi missed his pass to one of his midfielders and Paredes recovered the ball. He passed it to Neymar who ran into depth and passed the ball to Di María who scored.

With a PPDA (Passes allowed Per Defensive Actions) standing at 8.96, slightly above their season average in the Champions’ League, PSG prevented Leipzig from playing their game. Worse for the Germans, they decisively capitalised on their opponent’s mistakes.

PSG and how they approached their build-up

While PSG adopted a 4-3-3, Nagelsmann opted for a 4-1-4-1 in a mid-block where they weren’t pressing the centre-backs. They were packing the middle of the pitch, something that Tuchel anticipated, which was why Paredes was starting. PSG needed someone to progress the ball higher up the field. The midfielder alternated between dropping deeper to form a back three with Presnel Kimpembe and Thiago Silva and sitting a bit higher, on the same vertical line to Marquinhos, as seen below.

This created numerical superiority for PSG in deeper areas and allowed Paredes time on the ball to pick the right forward pass. However, the main issue a side faces when they drop a midfielder deeper during build-up is that it becomes less likely that you can successfully progress the ball in between the first and the second lines of your opponent when they pack the middle of pitch. PSG would have struggled to progress the ball in between the lines if they didn’t place Neymar in the half-space. This is depicted below.

Paredes was able to find Neymar in between the lines on multiple occasions. Two of them are highlighted here. With Marco Verratti out, Paredes was the only midfielder able to break Leipzig’s lines. Targeting Neymar on the half turn was the best way to create danger in the final third, as he is PSG’s most creative player. The midfielder ended the game with nine progressive passes, the highest amount for any player on the pitch.

Runs into depth

With Leipzig adopting a three at the back formation, PSG decided to attack the channels between Leipzig centre-backs. With Kylian Mbappé, who excels in his off the ball movement, it appeared as a good strategy. At any given opportunity, they attacked space when they spotted it. In the still below, we can see Mbappé running into depth despite Leipzig not providing much space at all between their defensive line and the goalkeeper. Ander Herrera was still able to pass him the ball into feet but the French forward didn’t win his 1v1 against the goalkeeper.

In the second still, Kylian Mbappé receives the ball and Neymar spots the space in between Dayot Upamecano and another Leipzig player. The Brazilian runs into depth and goes 1v1 against the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, he misses it.

Ultimately, PSG’s third goal came from another run into depth. This time, it was from Juan Bernat, PSG’s left-back. Thanks to his run, he made Leipzig’s defence move deeper. He got the ball but didn’t initially score from the chance created. However, the ball came back a few seconds after and the Spaniard eventually put the ball in the net following a Di María cross.

PSG created most of their chances through running in behind Leipzig’s defensive line. They could’ve scored from two of those situations earlier in the game were Mbappé and Neymar to have converted their chances.

Conclusion

Thanks to a well executed plan, PSG reached the Champions’ League final for the first time in their 50 year history. The first 10 minutes in the second half where Leipzig seemed to get back into the game aside, Les Parisiens were in full control. While their xG stands at 2.8, they prevented Leipzig’s xG to get over one (0.8 in fact).

As Julian Nagelsmann said, “In the end, PSG’s ticket to the final is well deserved. We needed a goal to get back into the game but instead they got it. Our belief was gone and in the end it was a case of character, and we did better in the second half. That’s football, sometimes it’s hard.”

The French side will now face Bayern Munich on Sunday for what could be an historic night for them.

Bayer Leverkusen initiate contacts for Jeff Reine-Adélaïde

Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen have initiated contacts for French U21s international and attacking midfielder Jeff Reine-Adélaïde, according to L’Équipe.

The Frenchman announced earlier this week that he wished to quit Lyon, because of what he feels have been a series of broken promises from the board.

Leverkusen, who have lost Kai Havertz in exchange for a fee of around €90m including add-ons, have a considerable budget to target a deal for the ex-Arsenal man with, despite him being under contract with OL until June 2024.

The player has already been presented with the Bayer project and he is open to a move to the Bundesliga side. Leverkusen know that the longer they wait, the more likely they will face intense competition for JRA’s signature – Hertha Berlin would also like to make a deal and initial contacts with the relevant parties have been initiated.

Once the player has decided which clubs he wants to join, then the “winning” club will have to convince OL, with Sporting Director Juninho explaining to the press earlier this week that he had no intention of selling JRA, despite the player’s outburst.
