Buttigieg unveils Medicare plan preserving private insurance

The South Bend, Ind., mayor’s “Medicare for All Who Want It” would aim to achieve universal coverage by introducing a public option and increasing subsidies for private insurance.

“For years, Washington politicians have allowed the pharmaceutical industry, giant insurance companies, and powerful hospital systems to profit off of people when they are at their sickest and most vulnerable,” Buttigieg said in a statement.

“My ‘Medicare for All Who Want It’ plan will create a health care system that puts power in the hands of each American.”

Uninsured Americans would automatically be enrolled into the government insurance plan, while those with employer-provided insurance would be able to opt in.

The health care proposal also includes measures to address surprise billing and an out-of-pocket spending cap for Medicare.

After amassing impressive fundraising totals and surprising a Democratic primary full of more well-known politicians, Buttigieg has consistently been polling in single digits in national and early state surveys.

Trump has sought to cast the impeachment inquiry as nothing more than a “witch hunt” and has insisted that nothing about his request to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was inappropriate or nefarious.

A partial record of a July call between Trump and Zelensky released by the White House on Wednesday shows that the American president urged Zelensky to open a corruption investigation after a discussion of U.S. military assistance to Ukraine.

Trump and his allies are betting that his most loyal supporters will not be swayed by the conversation and that the impeachment inquiry will ultimately backfire on Democrats in 2020, when Trump is up for reelection.

Colbert questions Sanders on middle-class tax hike after pressing Warren on the same topic

“Sen. Warren was on here last week and I asked her about her plans for Medicare for All, and I’m going to ask you the question that I asked her at the risk of being accused of trumpeting Republican talking points,” Colbert said. “Is there an increase in taxes on the middle class to pay for Medicare for All or rather where would the tax burden go to pay for that?”

In response, Sanders said there would be a progressive tax, but that health care premiums would be reduced.

“Nobody in America will pay any more premiums, just talked to a woman the other day who pays $1,700 a month, $20,000 a year, gone. No more co-payments, gone, no more out-of-pocket expenses, gone, nobody will go bankrupt,” Sanders responded.

“Now having said that, is health care free? No, it is not,” he added. “So what we do is exempt the first $29,000 of a person’s income, you make less than $29,000, you pay nothing in taxes. Above that, in a progressive way, with the wealthiest people in this country paying the largest percentage, people do pay more in taxes.”

He gave an example of someone paying $20,000 in “a tax called a premium for the insurance companies” now having to pay a $10,000 government tax instead.

“You’re $10,000 to the good, you would ask me where do I sign up for that?” Sanders said.

The Democratic presidential candidate contends that his health care plan would result in most people paying less for health care.

“We are covering all basic health care needs. Medicare is a very strong program and all I want to do … is expand it to everybody and include dental care, hearing aids and eyeglasses, and home health care as well,” said Sanders. “The overwhelming majority of the American people will be paying less for health care than they are today.”

He added that in his plan there would be a private market for non-basic health services.

The question from Colbert follows a back-and-forth last week between the TV host and Warren when he asked her if she would raise middle-class taxes.

“How are you going to pay for it? Are you going to be raising the middle-class taxes?” Colbert asked the Massachusetts Democrat.

“So, here’s how we’re going to do this. Costs are going to go up for the wealthiest Americans, for big corporations,” Warren replied. “And hard-working middle-class families are going to see their costs going down.”

Trump attacks 'Medicare for All' in Florida, accuses Dems of wanting to fund 'socialism'

President TrumpDonald John TrumpSenate advances public lands bill in late-night vote Warren, Democrats urge Trump to back down from veto threat over changing Confederate-named bases Esper orders ‘After Action Review’ of National Guard’s role in protests MORE on Thursday attacked “Medicare for All” and called his Democratic presidential rivals “maniacs” as he tried to make his case on health care ahead of next year’s election.

Trump, speaking at The Villages, a sprawling retirement community in the key swing state of Florida, sought to portray himself as a protector of Medicare for seniors, in contrast to Democratic plans to expand the program to everyone through Medicare for All.

“They want to raid Medicare to fund a thing called socialism,” Trump said of Democrats.

“The last administration frankly was moderate compared to the maniacs you’re hearing from today,” he added, pointing to “Elizabeth Pocahontas Warren,” whom he said appeared to be his leading challenger.

Warren backs the Medicare for All plan that would provide government health insurance to everyone with no premiums or deductibles. Trump argued Thursday that Medicare should remain only for seniors and that expanding it would jeopardize the program and require tax increases.

Trump also signed an executive order to strengthen Medicare, aimed at driving his message home. The order aims to strengthen Medicare Advantage, the branch of Medicare that is administered by private insurers and that Republicans warn would be abolished under Medicare for All.

Democrats won back the House of Representatives last year in large part on the issue of health care, campaigning against Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and its protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

As a counter, Trump has rolled out a series of health care initiatives, including taking action in an effort to lower drug prices and increase transparency in health care.

But Trump also made clear Thursday that he still hopes to repeal the Affordable Care Act if he wins reelection and if Republicans take back the House.

“If the Republicans take back the House, keep the Senate, keep the presidency, we’re going to have a fantastic plan,” Trump said.

Trump is also supporting a lawsuit currently in the courts seeking to overturn the entire Affordable Care Act.

Congressional Republicans are seeking to focus not on repeal of the ACA but instead on attacking Democrats’ Medicare for All plans, warning they would eliminate private insurance.

Trump echoed those attacks on Thursday.

“They want to raise your taxes” to pay for the plan, Trump said.

“Listen to this number, $32 trillion,” he said of Medicare for All’s cost. “With a T, we’re beyond the B’s, the billions.”

Supporters argue that while taxes would go up, most people’s total costs would go down, given that premiums and deductibles would be eliminated.

Trump also called for lowering drug prices, a key issue for him.

Trump made no mention of the Speaker’s plan on Thursday, though.

He instead touted Florida’s plan to allow the importation of cheaper prescription drugs from Canada, saying the proposal would be approved “soon.”

His administration has taken a preliminary step towards allowing imports, but several steps remain before cheaper drugs actually would arrive.

Trump also did not totally set aside the impeachment push against him, even implying, without citing evidence, that pharmaceutical companies could be behind the “hoax” because they are opposed to his efforts to lower drug prices.

“[I] wouldn’t be surprised if it was from some of these industries that we take on,” he said.

Man Utd ‘jostling with’ Liverpool in race to sign Salzburg striker

Premier League side Man Utd have joined the race to sign Patson Daka from Red Bull Salzburg, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been linked with moves for a number of strikers in the summer transfer window but they are yet to bring in any players.

A new contract for Dean Henderson is one of their biggest deals of the summer so far as they have struggled to bring in reported top target Jadon Sancho.

MAILBOX: It would be ‘transfer window suicide’ if Man Utd didn’t sign £185m duo

The latest rumour in The Sun is that United are ‘ready to snap up’ Daka from Salzburg with ‘a number of other big clubs’ monitoring his progress.

The striker scored twice in a 2-2 friendly draw with Liverpool last week and now Man Utd are ‘jostling with the Reds’ for his signature.

The Red Devils missed out on signing Erling Haaland in January as he joined Dortmund from Salzburg with the likes of Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino also being sold over the last couple of years by the Austrian club.

Daka scored 24 goals in 31 league matches for the Austrian outfit with the report claiming that Man Utd would be ‘serious rivals’ if they let the Senegal international leave.

Any deal for Daka – whose contract runs until 2024 – could set the Red Devils back over £20m but after missing out on Haaland, Man Utd ‘know the cost of not swooping for young talent soon enough’.

Chelsea receive enquiry from Villa for former loan star

Aston Villa want to bring their former loan star Tammy Abraham back to Villa Park and have made an enquiry with Chelsea, according to reports.

Abraham returned to Chelsea last summer after a productive loan spell with Villa. His 25 goals in 37 league games helped Villa gain promotion to the Premier League.

The striker was summoned back to Stamford Bridge for the start of the 2019-20 season, and he repaid the faith shown in him by the club whose academy ranks he rose through.

MAILBOX: It would be ‘transfer window suicide’ if Man Utd didn’t sign £185m duo

With 18 goals in all competitions last season, Abraham was Chelsea’s top scorer in 2019-20. However, the arrival of Timo Werner has added competition for his place.

Amid those doubts over how much first team action Abraham will get next season, the Daily Mail claim Aston Villa have asked Chelsea if he would be available again.

Villa are keen to sign a striker this summer, with club record signing Wesley still out with an ACL injury. However, it looks like they will be unsuccessful in their attempts to re-sign Abraham.

The Daily Mail add that Abraham wants to stay and fight for his place at Chelsea. Having proven himself in the Premier League last season, he wants to do so again.

Abraham only signed a contract extension back in July, showing the club’s belief in him. However, reports since emerged claiming Frank Lampard was unsure if he would be able to replicate his form from last season.

It now appears that Abraham wants to send a definitive message about his credentials next season.

Arteta provides Aubameyang contract update following victory

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided fans with an update on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract negotiations.

Aubameyang has been linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer, with Barcelona keen on replacing Luis Suarez up front.

Rumours have been increased as the player’s contract is set to expire next summer.

FEATURE: Ponder replays: The end of an outmoded relic?

Following Arsenal’s Community Shield victory over Liverpool yesterday, Arteta reassured fans that the club captain would be staying.

He told BT Sport: “We are going to see… today we will just take the trophy and that is it.

“I keep saying the same thing. I try to do my job, which is convince him that he is in the right place, that he has the environment here to produce the moments like he’s done today and he’s done here three weeks ago.

“I am very positive that he’s going to sign but a lot of time there’s a lot of things involved in a contract deal and we are trying to show him.

“I think the move from the team [for his goal] was really, really good and he put the ball, all the time, where it belongs, which is the back of the net.”

Arteta seems confident that Aubameyang will extend his current deal and potentially see out the rest of his career at Arsenal.

Aubameyang scored the winning penalty as Arsenal beat Liverpool to win their first trophy of the season.

The match was played just weeks after Arsenal’s FA Cup victory over Chelsea, when they won 2-1 against Frank Lampard’s side.

Aubameyang’s two goals in that game helped to prove once again just how important he is to the club.

The player will be aiming to reach 20 goals once again during the upcoming season. He had a remarkable campaign last term, breaking into Arsenal’s top ten goalscorers of all time and becoming the fastest Arsenal player to reach 50 goals.

It looks like the Gunners are on the verge of tying down arguably their most important player to a long term contract.

Chelsea make improved offer for Rennes goalkeeper Mendy

Chelsea have returned with a second offer for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, according to sources.

The Blues are currently looking to replace out of favour Kepa Arrizabalaga, who had a poor season under Frank Lampard last campaign.

The Spaniard has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge as the club looks set to replace him.

FEATURE: Most expensive XI signed by promoted Premier League clubs

According to Goal, the London club has made an £18 million bid for Mendy.

They’ve improved upon the £15 million bid they made earlier this week, which was rejected.

Rennes are yet to respond to the second bid. However, they’re desperate to keep Mendy as he’s their first choice keeper.

The Senegalese international helped Rennes to their first ever Champions League finish last campaign, when they finished third under manager Julien Stephan.

Mendy made 9 clean sheets in 24 appearances for the club and started in their first Ligue 1 game of the new season.

Mendy could be a solid replacement for Arrizabalaga if Chelsea manage to sign him.

He would also be a lot cheaper than the club’s other goalkeeping options. They’ve been linked with Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak, who would cost around £90 million.

More recently, they’ve been linked with Italian youngster Gianluigi Donnarumma. The 21-year-old is one of the best young prospects in the world and could join the Blues on loan this season.

He would then need to impress Lampard to earn a permanent move to Stamford Bridge.

As part of the deal, Arrizabalaga would move on loan to AC Milan for the season to see if he can find his previous form.

At the moment it looks like Chelsea are looking at cheaper alternatives to Donnarumma following their spending spree over the past few months.

Having signed Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell, they’ve spent well over £130 million. They’re also in talks to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen and Declan Rice from West Ham.
