England aiming to break Belgium’s four-year unbeaten home run

England travel to Belgium this weekend as they look to become the first team in four years to win away against the Red Devils.

The situation in England’s Nations League group doesn’t make good reading for fans of the Three Lions. Whilst Gareth Southgate’s side can’t be relegated, they do face an uphill struggle when it comes to progressing to the finals.

A win against Belgium is vital if England are to make a late push for the top spot but the stats aren’t exactly on their side.

Belgium are in the midst of a remarkable 23-match unbeaten run at home. A total of 21 nations have tried their luck against Roberto Martinez and his side, yet none of them have managed to walk away victorious.

What’s more, when you take friendlies out of the picture, Belgium’s form makes for stellar reading with the side winning eight of their last nine competitive games; four of those also included a clean sheet.

Another key stat is the fact that no team has managed to score more than one goal away in Belgium since Mexico back in 2017. On that occasion, the Mexicans score three times yet that still wasn’t enough with the game ending in a draw.

England to score over 1.5 goals is 13/8 (Betfair)

England, though, have recorded a recent win against them and that could breed confidence.

Gareth Southgate’s men have got a decent away record in recent months having won on three of their last four trips without conceding a single goal. At the same time, the Three Lions have scored a total of 11 goals.

England to win to nil is 9/2 (PaddyPower)

England do hold a good historical record against their upcoming opponents having lost just four of their 24 meetings with Belgium.

However, the concerning bit about that is that three of those defeats have come during the last six games between the two nations.

Looking at all the stats, it does seem we are in for a close encounter at the King Baudouin stadium. And while there may have only ever been four draws in 24 previous meetings, this may be the way to go in the betting market on this occasion.

Correct score 1-1 is 5/1 (Betfair)

Bertrand pinpoints Man United’s two biggest threats

Southampton full-back Ryan Bertrand has picked out Manchester United’s two most dangerous players ahead of their game on 29 November.

The Saints have made a fantastic start to the new season. They sit fourth in the table after eight Premier League games.

They are six games unbeaten in the league and this run includes victories over Aston Villa, Everton and Newcastle United.

Big Weekend: Belgium v England, Scotland, Bale, France

Manchester United meanwhile have made an unsteady start to the new campaign. They are placed 14th after three defeats from their opening seven league games.

This includes defeats against Crystal Palace, Arsenal and the heavy loss at Old Trafford against Tottenham.

Man Utd’s defeat to Arsenal was followed up by a 2-1 loss in the Champions League to Istanbul Basaksehir. But they recovered well to these setbacks, beating Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park last time out.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer side will travel to face the Saints at St Mary’s in their second game back after the international break.

Bertrand told Stretty News that he sees Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes as Man Utd’s most threatening players ahead of that game:

“Manchester United are a great club with great individuals, it will be a tough game for us.

“They have shown some inconsistency but when they get it right they have had some amazing results.

“The threat on the counter is their biggest threat. They have many great individuals, [Marcus] Rashford, [Bruno] Fernandes seem to be their top performers so far.”

Mark Smith and Sarah Winterburn look ahead to the international break, everyone’s favourite time of the year. Jude Bellingham, then…

Barnes: Klopp would have got Liverpool sack if black or English

John Barnes claims Jurgen Klopp would have been sacked by Liverpool in his first two seasons in charge “if he was black”.

Klopp took charge at Anfield in October 2015 and led his team to eighth and fourth in his first two Premier League seasons.

And Barnes insists Klopp would have lost his job “under different circumstances”.

“You can put structures in place, but until you change your perception, nothing will change,’ Barnes told PlayOJO, in the wake of Greg Clarke’s resignation as FA chairman this week after calling black footballers ‘coloured.’

“I use Klopp as an example,” Barnes continued. “How successful was he really in the first two years in terms of being 25 points off the top? But we [Liverpool] believed that he was the right man.

“Under different circumstances, he would have lost his job. If he was black, he would have lost his job in those first two years.”

Barnes also spoke of the discrimination against English managers.

“If he [Klopp] was English, he would have lost his job,’ said Barnes.

“This is where the idea of discrimination is a little bit strange because there’s a group of people who are discriminated against in English football and the very highest level in the Premier League.

“Now, the top six teams will not have a white English manager. Yes, you can say Frank Lampard, as people have pointed out, but that’s because he has a special bond with Chelsea and that’s the only reason he managed Chelsea – but under different circumstances he wouldn’t have got that job.”

Barnes added that the lack of BAME managers in the English football pyramid is not down to the specifics of the sport itself.

“It’s nothing to do with black football managers,” he explains. “This is a wider issue because how many black managers are there in the higher echelons of any industry? And why should football be any different?

“Until we tackle it in society, and we change our perceptions in society, it will exist in all walks of society, which football is one.”
