Yanis Varoufakis’ star power wanes as his populist movement appears… unpopular

In front of a small crowd of around a hundred supporters and a few bemused German commuters, Yanis Varoufakis tried to start a revolution in European politics.

Greece’s former “rock-star” finance minister is making an unlikely comeback — as a candidate for the European elections in Germany.

The one-time scourge of Germany, who once described Angela Merkel’s handling of the Greek financial crisis as “terrorism”, is trying to persuade German voters to elect him as their MEP.

“Maybe I’ll stand as a candidate in the UK next. I think I still have British nationality,” he told the Telegraph on the sidelines of an election rally in Hanover on Friday night, before breaking into a familiar wolfish grin…
