Despite announcing on Raw last week that he would be competing in the Greatest Royal Rumble match, Sami Zayn did not appear in the bout, but his partner Kevin Owens did compete as scheduled.
According to PWInsider.com, Zayn is of Syrian descent, and both Syria and Saudi Arabia have had long standing problems, making it likely Zayn was unable to travel to the country due to Syrian and Saudi relations being severed years ago.
WWE issued the following statement on Zayn not appearing at the Greatest Royal Rumble:
“WWE is committed to embracing individuals from all backgrounds while respecting local customs and cultural differences around the world.”
WWE Scraps Plans for Returning Star to Compete in GRR Singles Match
As seen at the WWE Greatest Royal Rumble on Friday, Hornswoggle made his return to WWE as an entrant in the 50-man Royal Rumble match.
According to PWInsider.com, original plans for the Royal Rumble event called for Hornswoggle to face Robbie Araujo in a singles match. Araujo previously worked in WWE as WeeBL, and despite being flown to Saudi Arabia by WWE, the match plans were ultimately scrapped and the decision was made for Hornswoggle to be used in the Royal Rumble match.
The former “son” of Vince McMahon Tweeted the following on his return to WWE TV:
Life is pretty crazy sometimes! Thanks @wwe for having me a part of the #WWEGRR ! Got to dust off the ol’ suit for the first time in almost 10 years! pic.twitter.com/X4w4DwpfMv
