West Ham ‘main candidates’ for 35-goal Nigeria striker

West Ham United are the “main candidates” to sign Genk’s 35-goal striker Paul Onuachu, according to reports.

The striker made the move to Europe in 2012 as he joined Danish outfit FC Midtjylland. He was a bit-part player during his first few years at the club, but he shone between 2016 and 2019.

Onuachu netted 62 goals from his 116 outings for them during this three-season spell. This form led to his move to Belgian outfit Genk ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

The 27-year-old has been on fire for Genk of late. He netted ten times in his debut season and he followed this up with 35 goals in 41 outings in 2020/21.

West Ham are in the market for a new striker and Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur (as per Sport Witness) have reported that Onuachu is on their radar.

They suggest that Genk are after a fee that would blow their record sale “off the table”. They add that West Ham are the “main candidates” currently, but talks are “not yet over” for the striker.

Elsewhere, John Barnes has suggested that Declan Rice would be a “good fit” for Liverpool.

The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the most promising young midfielders in the Premier League.

Rice shone for West Ham in 2020/21 as they finished sixth in the top flight. He went onto impress at Euro 2020 as he helped England reach the final of the tournament.

Rice has also been linked with Chelsea and Man United, but Barnes feels that he “has the right profile” for Liverpool:

“There have been suggestions that Declan Rice is a target for Liverpool and he would be a good fit for them. Liverpool like central midfield players who work hard.

“Declan Rice isn’t going to come in and score lots of goals, he’s not going to be creative, he’s not a midfield player like David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Ilkay Gundogan, but Liverpool don’t need that.

“The kind of players Liverpool need are players like Rice or Yves Bissouma, hard-working midfield players who get the ball forward, make tackles, win the ball and keep it quite simple.

“He’s similar to Jordan Henderson in that way. So if he wants to come to Liverpool, he has the right profile for them.”
