Smalling ‘gutted’ to be leaving Roma to return to Man Utd

Chris Smalling has thanked Roma for the “love” they have showed him this season and admits he is “gutted” to be returning to Manchester United before the end of the Serie A club’s Europa League campaign.

Smalling has made 37 appearances for the Giallorossi following his loan move from Manchester United, scoring three goals and helping them to fifth in Serie A and to progress into the latter stages of the Europa League.

The centre-back’s loan agreement ran until the end of the 2019-20 Serie A campaign, but he has not been granted the chance to extend his stay in Italy to take part in the club’s remaining Europa League fixtures.

Roma will take on Sevilla in a single leg round of 16 tie in Germany on Thursday.

Smalling said: “I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season.

“To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten.

“I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA!”

Roma will still have the opportunity to sign Smalling permanently now that the summer transfer window is open, and could also explore the possibility of another loan deal for the 30-year-old.
