Holloway: Man Utd should sell Lingard after Snapchat antics

Manchester United should place Jesse Lingard on the transfer list after he shared a Snapchat video of him and his mates on holiday.

In the video, Lingard gives a tour of the rooms he and his friends – including United striker Marcus Rashford – are staying in while abroad.

The England international is heard swearing and shouting with one friend making a thrusting movement towards a pillow.

Reports on Friday claim Solskjaer is ‘furious’ over the incident and Holloway thinks the United boss continues to be “undermined” at United.

“It is unacceptable for me,” Holloway told talkSPORT.

“Would I discipline him? More than that, I would put him on the transfer list.

“For me, there is no way back. This is a huge problem.

“When you’re a professional footballer, you’re representing your club every second of every day and whatever you choose to do you have to remember that. You should always put the club first because it’s bigger than you.

“Manchester United is massive and the respect it should get from anybody who is lucky enough to play for them, they should understand that.

“And Lingard has been brought up though Sir Alex Ferguson’s regime, so he should know how to behave at all times, but he has videoed this himself and put it online himself.

“Man United are in turmoil with that dressing room, with Pogba the way he is… this manager and his staff have got to sort this out.

“As a Football manager you have a duty of care to make your players not just better players, but better people as well. That’s where we’re having terrible issues with this.

“He’s not just a young man, he has forgotten who he is, what his job and what his contract means. In his contract it will be written that you do not bring the club’s name into disrepute. He could be sacked over this, I believe.

“The work that has gone into making Manchester United who they are, what they’ve been, their wonderful history, that has been disrespected here and is on a regular basis, whenever I pick up the papers and I see Pogba talking about wants to go here or there.

“They’ve got a big problem. It’s a lack of respect around the place and you can’t have that. Your standards are the absolutely upmost priority as a manger, so he’s got to re-establish that and he has to make a statement to say this is not allowed.

“This wouldn’t happen at Liverpool now, because of Jurgen Klopp. Klopp is not undermined.

“It wouldn’t happen at Manchester City either, because Pep Guardiola is not undermined.

“Solksjaer doesn’t deserve to be undermined, but he is. When he gets the job that dressing room decides not to bother playing again.

“It’s the dressing room that’s wrong. This wouldn’t have happened before with the people and the respectful way you should be have to wear a Manchester United football shirt.”

Klopp told to bring £95m Griezmann to Liverpool this summer

ESPN pundit Craig Burley thinks Jurgen Klopp should sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann at Liverpool.

The Reds haven’t been heavily linked with Griezmann with the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona reportedly taking more of an interest.

A report a week ago in The Sun claimed that United will ‘smash their transfer record’ to spend £95m on the Frenchman and capitalise on Barcelona’s ‘failure to make an official move’.

It is understood that Klopp will only make minor tweaks to his Liverpool squad such as replacing Alberto Moreno and Daniel Sturridge, but Burley reckons they should try to make Griezmann their marquee summer signing.

“I still think that Antoine Griezmann would be a fantastic addition to Liverpool,” Burley told ESPN.

“Bearing in mind how well they did last year and how close they came to Manchester City.

“The quality that he would bring and to have somebody that can rotate with Firmino in that front three would be a fantastic addition.

“I don’t know if that is something that could be done but I think that if they are going to bridge that gap to Manchester City then that is the kind of player that they need to be signing.”

Napoli join Arsenal in race to sign £25m Celtic left-back

Napoli have joined the race to sign Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney amid Arsenal interest in the defender, according to reports.

The Celtic defender has been monitored by most of the big hitters south of the border but previous reports indicate the Gunners are most keen.

Unai Emery is looking to make his budget stretch as far as possible with recent reports claiming he has a limited summer budget.

However, they now face competition from outside of England with The Sun claiming that have made Napoli have made ‘enquiries for the £25million-rated Celtic left-back.’

The newspaper adds that ‘Carlo Ancelotti is hugely impressed with Tierney’s pedigree’ and the Serie A giants, who finished second to Juventus last term, know about Arsenal‘s interest.

Tierney has 12 senior international caps for Scotland at only 22, while he has over 150 appearances for Celtic to his name.

Ancelotti ‘hopes he can have an edge over Arsenal’ as the Gunners face another season without Champions League football.

Man United told to bugger off by two more Prem clubs

Manchester United have been dealt blows in their pursuit of Premier League pair Declan Rice and Max Aarons.

United are focusing on signing young, British talent this summer as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad revamp.

Dan James has already arrived from Swansea, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and David Brooks are among their other targets.

The club have also identified West Ham’s Rice as an option to improve their midfield, while Norwich right-back Aarons is considered an alternative to Wan-Bissaka.

But Sky Sports report that West Ham have told both United and Manchester United that ‘they have no intention’ of selling England international Rice after the two clubs ‘made initial enquiries’.

The 20-year-old ‘remains an attractive prospect’ at Old Trafford, but has five years left on his contract in east London.

Norwich are similarly ‘determined to hold on to’ Aarons despite interest from United, Tottenham and RB Leipzig.

The promoted Canaries are said to be ‘confident’ of keeping the 19-year-old, with the Daily Telegraph saying he ‘has not given Norwich any indication he wants to leave and could even be open to negotiating a new contract’.

Mata describes new two-year Man Utd deal as ‘real honour’

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has signed a new two-year contract, the Premier League club have announced.

The 31-year-old Spaniard, who moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea in 2014, was scheduled to be out of contract at the end of this month.

Manchester United is delighted to announce that Juan Mata has signed a new contract, which will keep him at the club until June 2021, with the option to extend for a further year,” United said on their official website.

Mata has scored 45 goals in 218 appearances for United, who are also considering an ambassadorial role for him down the line, Press Association Sport understands.

“It is a real honour to continue to represent this amazing club and our incredible fans,” Mata said.

“I have been at Manchester United for five years and I’m proud to call Old Trafford my home.

“I’m looking forward to working with Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) and his fantastic coaching staff; the vision that they have for the club is truly exciting and I am so happy that I will be a part of that.”

Solskjaer added: “Juan is the ultimate professional and one of the most intelligent players I have worked with. He is a great example to our younger players in his approach.

“He understands what it means to be a Manchester United player and has embraced everything about this great club.”

Since arriving at Old Trafford, Mata has won an Emirates FA Cup, a League Cup, the UEFA Europa League and FA Community Shield.

He has been capped 41 times by Spain and was a member of the squad that won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.

Mata has signed his new deal as fellow midfielder Ander Herrera and captain Antonio Valencia prepare to leave the club on free transfers.

There are also questions marks over a number of other key players, including Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and David De Gea.

Man Utd step up interest in two Wan-Bissaka alternatives

Manchester United are accelerating their interest in Norwich City defender Max Aarons, according to reports.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been heavily linked over the last month with a move to Old Trafford with United looking for a replacement for Antonio Valencia.

The Crystal Palace right-back is understood to be one of the Red Devils’ priorities in the transfer market this summer.

But Palace have been left distinctly underwhelmed with the nature of the negotiations with United and reportedly rejected a £50million offer on Tuesday.

And now Sky Sports claim that knock back has led to United ‘intensifying their pursuit’ of Norwich City full-back Aarons.

Aarons, who was the EFL Young Player of the Season, was an important part of Norwich’s squad that was promoted to the Premier League at the end of the last campaign.

Sky in Italy also claims that Elseid Hysaj – who has said he wants to leave Napoli this summer – is another alternative being considered by United if they can’t land Wan-Bissaka.

United have been in contact with Napoli over the 25-year-old after he said he wants to “play for another team”.

Man Utd ‘best placed’ to sign €75m Tottenham target

Manchester United are in the best position to sign Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, according to reports.

Lo Celso has emerged as one of Tottenham’s primary targets this summer, with the club already having one offer rejected by Real Betis.

The north London club will continue to pursue the midfielder, whose reported €75million release clause is proving inhibitive to any deal.

Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo claimed on Friday that United ‘are very interested’ in signing the 23-year-old, particularly if Paul Pogba leaves this summer.

And now El Desmarque Sevilla (via Sport Witness) says that United are ‘best placed’ to sign Lo Celso despite interest from Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone recently told Argentina media that he likes Lo Celso, further stoking rumours of his possible arrival at the Wanda Metropolitano.

In Portugal, several newspapers are reporting that United, Spurs and Atletico are also the three clubs battling it out for Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes, highlighting the need for those sides to reinforce their midfield.

Man United make ‘first offer’ of £70m for Arsenal striker

TalkSPORT host Andy Goldstein claims that Manchester United have made a “first offer” of £70m for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

United have been linked with a slew of players this summer, and have a ‘complete list’ of 18 targets.

They are ‘prioritising’ the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka before any other, however, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eager to bring in young, hungry recruits.

Yet Goldstein claimed on Tuesday evening that United ‘are interested in Aubameyang,’ and have already made an opening offer.

“I’ve got someone on the inside – not United, by the way, someone on the inside – who, every so often, will tell me transfer gossip. I would say he has a hit ratio of about, quite high, 75-25. Right? He’s told me quite a few that does happen, not just at United but other clubs as well.

“He told me about Anthony Martial, which I tweeted two days before United even approached. It was one of those, ‘how do you know?’. It was one of those.

“He has told me that United are interested in Aubameyang. What do you make of that? He’s got two years left on his deal, just under. He is 29 years old. He’s the finished article. United did something similar with Van Persie. Romelu Lukaku isn’t doing it for Solskjaer, I’m led to believe.

“Do you want to know the number I’m being told? I think it’s crazy money for a 29-year-old. What would you say? Two years left on his deal, scores goals.

“That’s what I’m being told,” he adds, holding up a sheet which apparently has ‘£70m’ written on it.

“There’s the first offer. For a 29-year-old. He’s only got two years left. If you’re at Arsenal and you’re in roughly the same sort of place as United at the moment, and United come in for you, where do you go?

“I think it fits quite well. I’m not saying it’s gonna happen but the person who’s told me, as I said, is a 75-25.”

Michel Platini detained over awarding of World Cup to Qatar

Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been detained for questioning by French police over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

France’s financial prosecutor’s office confirmed to Press Association Sport that 63-year-old Platini had been detained.

Platini, who has never denied voting for Qatar but has always rejected any claims of wrongdoing, was detained in a suburb of Paris on Tuesday morning.

The Parquet National Financier has been investigating the December 2010 decision to stage football’s biggest tournament in the small but wealthy Gulf state since 2016.

Qatar beat bids from Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States in a vote by the executive committee of world football’s governing body FIFA, but more than half of that 22-man panel have now been accused of receiving bribes.

Platini was head of European football’s governing body until 2015 when he was handed an eight-year ban over ethics breaches that was later reduced to four years on appeal.

The ban expires this October and he has previously suggested he intends to return to football politics.

Platini and former FIFA boss Sepp Blatter were banned for eight years by FIFA’s ethics committee in December 2015, although a FIFA appeal body reduced that to six years, for a “disloyal payment” of £1.5million paid by Blatter to Platini.

The pair then made separate appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which upheld Blatter’s sanction but cut a further two years off Platini’s. Blatter has always denied any wrongdoing.

The French authorities have also arrested Sophie Dion, a former adviser of ex-French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and questioned Claude Gueant, Sarkozy’s ex-chief of staff.

Sarkozy’s support for Qatar World Cup bid has been the subject of considerable speculation for several years and it is understood the French authorities want to know what promises were made at a lunch at the French premier’s Elysee Palace on November 23, 2010 – 10 days before the FIFA vote.

At that lunch were Platini, Sarkozy, the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and Qatar’s former prime minister and foreign minister Sheikh Hamad Ben Jassim.

It is no secret that Sarkozy was eager to foster close economic links with Qatar, but the investigation is also looking into the June 2011 deal that saw Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund the French leader’s favourite football team, Paris St Germain, and the subsequent launch of BeIN Sports, the Doha-based media company run by PSG’s chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Al-Khelaifi has denied any wrongdoing.

Platini had a glittering playing career, winning the 1984 European Championship with France and also league titles in France and Italy with St Etienne and Juventus. He won the Ballon d’Or in three successive seasons from 1983 to 1985.

UEFA declined to comment on Platini’s detention when contacted by Press Association Sport.

A FIFA spokesperson said: “FIFA reiterates its full commitment to co-operating with the authorities in any given country of the world where investigations are taking place in connection with football activities.”

Tottenham identify perfect Alderweireld replacement

Tottenham have identified Joachim Andersen as one of their ‘possible replacements’ for Toby Alderweireld.

It remains to be seen whether Alderweireld will choose to leave Tottenham this summer, with one year remaining on a contract that has a £25m release clause.

But the London Evening Standard say Andersen is one centre-half Tottenham ‘are tracking’ in case the Belgian leaves.

Juventus and Manchester United are known admirers of the 23-year-old, who has impressed at Sampdoria after joining in 2017.

Tottenham ‘are unlikely to make a move’ for the Dane ‘until Alderweireld’s future is resolved’, with midfield reinforcements also a priority.
