NEW YORK — Turns out the home of the Statue of Liberty is no beacon of patriotism. New York is the second-least patriotic state in the nation, according to a new WalletHub report that ranks a neighboring state dead last.
The personal finance website determined the most and least patriotic states based on 13 indicators of military and civic engagement. The ranking is based on figures from a range of sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau and the United States Elections Project.
The Empire State placed 49th overall, thanks in part to its low military participation. New York has the fewest veterans per capita, with just 53.8 per 1,000 civilian adults, and the nation’s smallest share of civilian adults in military reserves at just 0.19 percent, according to WalletHub.
New York also struggles with volunteerism — the state had the nation’s fourth-lowest volunteer rate and the second-fewest volunteer hours per resident at just 18.64, the report found.
Only New Jersey is less patriotic than New York, WalletHub says. The Garden State placed 50th on the list overall, ranking 48th in the nation for military engagement and 45th for civic engagement, according to the report.
This isn’t the first time New York has been found to be poor in patriotism. WalletHub ranked the Empire State fifth from the bottom last year and dead last in 2015.
