Ferdinand names £300m-plus quintet Man United must sign

Rio Ferdinand has named the three central midfielders he would sign for Man Utd, along with two defenders he would also pursue.

Man Utd continue to be linked with expensive moves even in the midst of a global pandemic and football’s subsequent financial struggle.

Declan Rice is the latest player subjected to interest from Old Trafford, with Jamie Carragher of the belief he would be “perfect” in a central defensive three.

Jack Grealish remains a key target, alongside James Maddison and Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, but Ferdinand believes another Leicester player should be in the transfer frame.

“I’d maybe go get Partey from Atletico Madrid or Ndidi from Leicester,” Ferdinand told The Beautiful Game podcast of the players he would aim to sign if it were his decision – which it almost was.

“I like Saul Niguez. He’s a very, very good player in midfield.

“And then a centre-back, they still need a centre-back.

“Whether you go for a young one like a Ben Godfrey or someone like Koulibaly. I don’t know, it’s difficult.”

Partey is currently in apparent £44m talks with Arsenal, while Atletico teammate Saul is already on United’s radar for £70m.

It is not known what Leicester would value Ndidi at but a 23-year-old with four years left on his contract, signed for £15m and now crucial to a Champions League push, would certainly not come cheap.

Norwich defender Godfrey was rated at £50m when Tottenham were linked in February, with surprise Newcastle target Koulibaly is thought to be available for around £70m, although Man Utd have already withdrawn from that race.
