Eurostat to get Bulgarian deputy director-general

European Commission appoints Mariana Kotzeva to replace Czech Marie Bohatá at statistics office.

The European Commission has appointed Mariana Kotzeva of Bulgaria as deputy-director of Eurostat, the EU’s statistics office. She is scheduled to replace Marie Bohatá, a Czech who is to retire, on 1 July.

Kotseva will be the most senior Bulgarian civil servant in the European Union’s administration.

Kotzeva is currently a special adviser at Eurostat, a post she has held since 2012. She previously served as the head of Bulgaria’s national statistics institute and an adviser to Bulgaria’s president.

She also advised the United Nations Development Programme and Serbia’s labour and employment ministry.

Kotzeva holds a doctoral degree from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia, where she is an associate professor, and master’s degrees in economics and in statistics.
