Dimensional Accuracy and Tolerance

Dimensional accuracy is a term used to compare the intensity of compatibility between the planned and actual dimensions of the output. Tolerance refers to a specifically permitted volume of variation to the planned dimensions. For example, if the tolerance is ±0.002 and we have a part with a diameter of 3.000 inches, the acceptable diameters will be 2.998 inches to 3.002 inches.

If you are working on a part without a specific tolerance provided, you can use international tolerance standards that are +/-0.1mm.

Surface Finish and Roughness

The surface of machined parts describes the quality and precision of the CNC machine itself, which is measured by the roughness in micrometers’ rigor with a laser scanner, where the standard of a CNC machined surface roughness should be 125 μin.

Assembly and Fit

The machined parts must be assembled and fit together perfectly, showing the result of Dimensional Accuracy. The parts need to be synchronized together, forming a functional product.

Industry Standards and Regulations in Quality Control for CNC Machining

There are three common quality control standards in the machining industry.

ISO 9001

Released in 1987 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO 9001 is one of the most well-known and used quality management systems. It aims to help businesses meet customers’ expectations and maintain quality products.

ISO 16949

It’s also a quality management standard that focuses on the automotive industry, which provides a framework to maximally decrease waste of materials in the supply chains and a high level of security.

AS9100

Finishing with the AS9100 that was made in 1999, focusing on the aerospace industry, this management standard requires more severe control over the product compared to other quality management systems.

What Steps are Involved in Quality Control and Inspection?

Machined parts require consistent quality control and inspection, so following those next key steps is a must for manufacturers.

Raw Materials & Tool Inspection

Raw materials are one of the most essential and first inspections that must be done. These inspections could be done while receiving the raw material by visually checking it to ensure that there is no damage in the packaging, the surface is totally smooth, and the measurement meets the design’s requirements. Also, make sure that there are no errors in the centering and tool movements, such as the spinning and linear axis movement ability.

First Article Inspection (FAI)

A process to verify whether a new or newly modified product meets the manufacturing specification, dimensional characteristics, and quality requirements. The FAI can also validate whether the product meets standards and regulations like ISO9001.

Nowadays the FAI no longer needs complex paperwork instead, there is software that provides immediate review and reduces FAI rejection such as Net-Inspect’s software.

In-process Inspection

The In-process inspection takes care of all manufacturing details along the production process by checking parameters in every single part to ensure that it meets all the requirements and standards.

Final Inspection

The final inspection phase ensures that machined parts conform to the quality standards and dimensions, before meeting the other parts to form a complete product by thoroughly inspecting, the manufactured part details where the CMM is usually implemented.

Assembly and Fit-Up Inspection

After making sure that all the manufactured parts meet the quality standards comes the assembly phase, the manufacturer assembles all parts together. Then, checking the products if they meet the geometric tolerances, all parts need to be synchronized together to accomplish the product utility.

Statistical process control (SPC)

The use of static processes to control and manage CNC machines while working helps manufacturers determine if there are any deviations or errors, which ensures a high-quality CNC machined part. Using Qualis 4.0, SPC software could make the task easier by offering an advanced analysis and a high tracking performance.

Tools and Methods for Inspection in CNC Machining

There are different tools and methods to be used in inspecting CNC machined parts.

Dimensional and Tolerance Measurement Tools

Precision and dimensional perfection are necessary for CNC machining manufacturers. These tools include modern and traditional ones.

  • Coordinate measuring machines (CMM): CMM is a powerful measuring device that uses a contact probe to set random points on the measured surface. It ues the touch-trigger or lazer scanner technologies to create a digital plan of the part and provide precise measures, to use CMM you must be familiar with using CAD models to compare measured data with the intended design.
  • Traditional Measurement Tools: To measure CNC machined parts, we can also use traditional tools such as Calipers and micrometres, which are easy to use and valuable tools when it comes to dimensional measurements.

Surface Finish Inspection

The inspection of the surface of the machined part ensures its quality and functionality. Several techniques could be used for surface inspection, such as visual inspection, one of the simplest and most efficient techniques, and Eddy Current Testing.

Hardness Testers

If material hardness is unknown, it needs to be tested to ensure that it meets the hardness requirements. There is many techniques you can use in the hardness tests such as Brinell and Vickers.

Visual Inspection

A visual inspection could be one of the most efficient inspection methods, but it requires a manufacturer with a high level of experience who is skilled in using tools like borescopes and microscopes to verify all the product parts, especially the angles, holes, and geometric tolerances, by comparing them with the engineering drawings.

Can You Put Chlorine Tablets in the Pool Skimmer?

From replacing pricey equipment, to staying on top of weekly chemical checks, there’s no denying that swimming pools are an expensive and time-consuming commitment. So it’s no wonder why many pool owners search for ways to reduce how much time and money they spend on their pool maintenance. One common time and money-saving practice is placing chlorine tablets into the pool skimmer. While this method might seem like a quick and easy way to maintain your pool’s sanitization level, you might be causing more harm than good.

In this article, we explore the main problems caused by putting chlorine tablets in the pool skimmer, and the impact it can have on the pool and its users, including:

1. Corrosion and Damage to Pool Equipment

Chlorine tablets have a low pH level, making them highly-acidic, especially in concentrated doses. As the tablets dissolve and the chlorine builds up in the skimmer, so does the acidity level. When the acidic water travels through the pump and filter, it will start to corrode the metal components of your equipment. Over time, the corrosion will cause serious damage to your pool equipment, resulting in costly repairs and replacements.

2. Uneven Chlorine Distribution

When the pool pump is off, the water in the skimmer sits stagnant until the next pump cycle begins. As the tablets dissolve in the skimmer, the heavily-chlorinated water stays localized to one spot and isn’t evenly distributed throughout the pool. Over-chlorinated water can cause equipment damage and skin irritation, eye redness, and respiratory problems for swimmers. While under-chlorinated areas of the pool can be a breeding ground for bacteria and other harmful microorganisms, like algae.

3. Imbalanced pH Levels

Because chlorine tablets have a low pH, they can decrease your pool’s overall pH level. A low pH level makes the water too acidic and can cause skin and eye irritation for swimmers. It can also lead to the deterioration of pool surfaces, equipment, and plumbing. Imbalanced pH levels can also affect the effectiveness of chlorine in killing bacteria and other harmful microorganisms in the pool water.

4. Skimmer Basket Damage

Residue left behind by chlorine tablets can develop a buildup in the skimmer and cause it to malfunction. This can prevent the skimmer from effectively filtering the pool water, resulting in cloudy water. The buildup can also make it challenging to clean the skimmer basket, leading to further maintenance issues.

How to Safely Use Chlorine Tablets

Putting chlorine tablets directly in the pool skimmer can cause several problems that can impact your pool’s health and the health of those who use it. Thankfully, there are two simple ways to avoid the problems above! Using a floating chlorinator or automatic chemical feeder is the safest and easiest way to ensure your pool receives the right amount of chlorine.


10 Steps to Winterize Your Above Ground Pool

As summer slowly draws to a close, now is the time to think about preparing your pool for winter. Prevent damage from snow and frozen water this winter, and make pool opening next spring a breeze! Learn how to expertly winterize your above ground pool with our 10 steps.

1. Balance Water Chemistry

The first step before you winterize your above ground pool is to balance the water chemistry about a week before you are ready to close. Test your pool water and ensure that the chemical levels are within the following ranges:

  • pH: 7.4–7.6 ppm
  • Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness: 200–400 ppm
  • Chlorine: 2.0–4.0 ppm

2. Shock the Pool

After balancing the water chemistry, add diluted granular chlorine, or non-chlorine pool shock, to your pool water to remove any contaminants that could cause stains or algae during winter. The usual treatment is one bag (or pound) per 10,000 gals of pool water, for clear water. If your pool water is hazy or green, add double or triple the normal dosage. Use a brush afterwards, and brush the floor and walls until your arms wear out.

3. Clean the Pool

On the day of the pool closing, be ready to clean your pool with your pool vacuum, brush and skimmer net. Clean it well before lowering the water, and skim again before covering the pool, to remove any wind blown debris.

It’s important to winterize your above ground pool when it’s in spotless condition. Any debris left in the pool will use up your winterizing pool chemicals, affect water balance, and create ugly stains.

4. Remove Accessory Items

Remove your skimmer basket, return fittings, solar blankets, pool alarms, ladders or steps, and pool cleaners. Dry and stow them safely for the winter months – indoors or protected from the elements.

Solar blankets can be left on the solar reel, and covered with our durable winter solar cover. They can also be dried, folded and stored in a location inaccessible to mice.

5. Lower Water Level

Now, you can save the skimmer and save water with the aboveground pool Skimmer Plug. Just snap on the plastic skimmer cover, and you can keep the water at normal levels. Drain the skimmer pipe, or disconnect the hose connecting to the pump.

If you don’t use a skimmer plug that fits into the opening to block water, you need to lower the water level below the mouth of your skimmer to prevent damage from frozen water. Lower the water level to about 3” below the skimmer opening. Removing too much water could stress your pool cover, liner or pool walls.

You can use your pool cover pump, or let the water run out of the return line hose by disconnecting it from the filter. If you have a low water suction line, in addition to the skimmer, close or plug the skimmer, and use the LWS line to lower the water below the skimmer, by setting the filter valve on waste or disconnecting the plumbing (next).

6. Drain & Plug the Pipes

For the return line, back to the pool: If you have filter hoses, use a winter pool plug, or the threaded 1.5″ plug with o-ring on the return line – on the inside of the pool, and then disconnect the hose, draining it dry. If you have hard PVC pipes that cannot be removed, use a large wet/dry vac to blow (or suck) the water from the pipes, and add pool antifreeze for extra protection.

For the skimmer, remove and drain the hose connected to the pump. If you have hard PVC pipes, drain, suck or blow water out. Use a winter skimmer plug to keep water out of the pipe during winter. PVC pool pipe cracks easily when the temperature falls below 32 degrees, so be sure all the water is out, or add antifreeze if you’re not sure.

The Skimmer Guard Gizmo is a combination skimmer plug and skimmer protector. It plugs the pipe to keep water out, but also absorbs ice expansion inside the skimmer. Skimmers can fill up during the winter, expand, and easily crack a skimmer housing. The Skimmer Guard Gizmo absorbs the expansion, protecting the sidewalls of your skimmer. It includes a #9 rubber expansion plug to seal up the return line.

7. Drain the Equipment

The next step to winterize your above ground pool is to drain all the pumping, filtering, heating and chlorinating equipment and blow out all water from plumbing lines. Otherwise, the water will freeze and crack the equipment. After draining, pool pipes should be sealed at the pool with plugs, to keep water out of the pipes and equipment during winter.

Pumps have 1 or 2 drain plugs.
Filters have 1 cap or plug near the bottom.
Gas heaters have drain plugs on each side.
Solar pool heaters have a union or drain cap, or blow air through the solar panels.
Heat pumps loosen union nuts, slide back and tip the unit slightly to drain.
Chlorinators or Purifiers have 1 drain plug.

Be sure to shut off the power and gas supply to gas-fired pool heaters. You can protect pool heaters and heat pumps with a pool heater cover to prevent damage caused by snow, dirt, debris, and animals. Mothballs or mint sachets are also effective at keeping nesting mice out of pool heaters.

For DE pool filters and filter cartridges, a final cleaning and inspection is needed while closing the pool. Remove your filter grids or filter cartridge and hose thoroughly. Soak in our filter cleaner to have grids or cartridges at their cleanest, before replacing them into the filter for dry winter storage. Sand filters also benefit from an end of year cleaning to remove oils and mineral scale.

Finally, at the equipment pad, be sure to shut off all power to the pump, lights, heater and other equipment. If you can easily remove the entire equipment pack for indoor storage, that would be best.

8. Lubricate O-rings

Now is also a good time to lubricate the soft rubber o-rings or threaded metal parts of your equipment. Use a Teflon based pool lube for rubber o-rings on your pump lid o-ring, filter tank o-rings, union o-rings, drain plug o-rings, or any other rubber o-ring on your pool equipment.

9. Add Winter Closing Chemicals

In addition to maintaining good water balance during the winter, adding winter algaecides and chemical floaters keeps your pool water clean and clear during winter. Not adding the right chemicals when you winterize your above ground pool will lead to a long and costly spring clean-up.

A pool winterizing kit makes the process more convenient – just buy the winter kit that matches your pool size. In The Swim winter kits include algaecide, non-chlorine shock, stain & scale preventative, slow release floater and oil absorbing sponge.

10. Cover Your Pool

Last but not the least; cover your pool with a tight fitting pool cover to ensure that debris and leaves cannot get into your pool. Winter pool covers for above ground pools come in a variety of round and oval sizes, order by pool size for a perfect fit.

Air pillows are used in to break up the ice sheet that forms in the pool under the cover, during several days of below freezing weather. This prevents damage to the pool walls and skimmer from a solid sheet of ice expanding outward.

If there are large trees surrounding your pool, put a leaf catcher on top of your winter cover. Lightweight and super tough mesh lets you remove all leaves and debris in one easy motion.

One more winter pool cover accessory is worth mentioning. You’ll need some way to remove the rain water and snow melt from the cover, either with an electrical or gravity fed pool cover pump.

  10月26日,由中国驻东京旅游办事处主办,东京中国文化中心、人民网(日本)共同协办的“2024美丽乡村——中日青少年欢乐跑”活动在日本千叶县铫子市成功举办,来自日本千叶科学大学及其附属高中、暨南大学日本学院等百余名中日青少年参加了本次活动。
