Forever chemicals PFAS: risks, bans, and eco-friendly alternative

PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, are found in a wide range of products, from rain jackets to specialized research instruments. Due to their accumulation in the environment, they are slated for prohibition. In this article, we explore the potential risks of these substances, the upcoming bans, and possible alternatives.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are a frequently discussed topic in health and environmental protection. Once released, they remain in the environment for a long time, accumulate in the food chain, and can harm both humans and the environment. These substances, known as “forever chemicals,” are detectable worldwide in water, soil, plants, animals, and humans.

PFAS are used due to their thermal and chemical stability, as well as their water- and grease-repellent properties. They are found in items such as mobile phones, wind turbines, cosmetics, solar panels, medical devices, and rain jackets, and are difficult to replace in many of these products. Despite their widespread use, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has proposed a ban on the production, use, and marketing of PFAS. Companies must now review their supply chains and find alternatives.

Event Tip: EC conference Understanding PFAS and reformulating PFAS-free coatings

In our EC conference “Understanding PFAS and reformulating PFAS-free coatings” from 18. – 19. Nov 2024 in Cologne, we will address the question of how the industry can adapt to this challenge. Learn the full story behind PFAS. Which substances are of concern, but which are useful and less critical? What alternatives already exist? Find out which areas have the most potential and where the current limits lie. In addition, international experts will report on the latest developments and innovations on PFAS and alternatives.

Applications of PFAS

PFAS have been synthetically produced since around 1950 as they do not occur naturally. They are widely used because they are water-, grease-, and dirt-repellent, as well as temperature-resistant and durable.

Typical applications include surface treatment of metals and plastics, semiconductor manufacturing, photographic processes, and use in the automotive and construction industries. PFAS are also found in cables, seals, coolants, cleaning agents, pesticides, paints, and firefighting foams.

Furthermore, PFAS can be found, either intentionally or as contaminants, in cosmetic and personal care products, fast-food packaging, baking paper, microwave popcorn bags, muffin tins, water-repellent outdoor clothing, carpets, tablecloths, non-stick pans, baking molds, foils, cups, plates, storage boxes, impregnating agents, floor and car care products, ski waxes, and electronic devices.

Risks of PFAS

PFAS can enter the environment during their production, processing, use, and disposal. Humans primarily absorb these chemicals through the food chain and drinking water. They can also enter the human body through air, household dust, and PFAS-containing products, where they accumulate mainly in organs and blood. Studies show that PFAS are either excreted unchanged and slowly or metabolized into other PFAS. Short-chain PFAS are excreted more quickly than long-chain ones. The accumulation in the body can lead to reduced vaccine effectiveness, decreased fertility, increased cholesterol levels, higher diabetes risk, liver damage, hormonal disruptions, impaired fat metabolism, and increased cancer risk.

Formic Acid – Limitless Potential

From the days when Formic Acid was long considered a chemical compound of only minor industrial interest to today when it finds increasing use as a preservative and antibacterial in livestock feed, the demand and potential for Formic Acid seem only bound by our curiosity.

Found in the stings and bites of many insects, including bees and ants where they secrete Formic Acid for attack and defence purposes, humans didn’t isolate the element until 1671. It would be another 184 years before a French chemist named Marcellin Berthelot, developed a synthesis from carbon monoxide, a process that is very similar to the one we use to this day.

The primary use of Formic Acid is as a preservative and antibacterial agent in livestock feed. When sprayed on fresh hay, it halts certain decay processes and causes the feed to preserve its nutritional value for longer periods of time and consequently is particularly valuable in the colder months for cattle feed. When used in the poultry industry, it is occasionally added to feed to kill salmonella bacteria. Other industries use it to:

  • It is used to process organic latex (sap) into raw rubber.
  • Beekeepers use formic acid as a miticide against the mites.
  • It is used in the textile industry and for the tanning of leather.
  • It is the active ingredient in some brands of household limescale removers.
  • In synthetic organic chemistry, formic acid is often used as a source of hydride ion.

In the laboratory setting, Formic Acid is used as a source for carbon monoxide, which is set free by the addition of sulfuric acid.

One area of excitement is in fuel cells that use modified formic acid. Formic Acid is fed directly into the fuel cell, removing the need for complicated catalytic reforming plsu, storage of Formic Acid is much easier and safer than that of hydrogen because it does not need to be done at high pressures and (or) low temperatures.

It is also a significant combustion product resulting from alternatively fuelled vehicles burning methanol and ethanol when mixed with gasoline.

Redox can supply Formic Acid in 25kg carboys and 1200kg IBC’s.

I Think I Like Timothée Chalamet More When He's Dressed Like Edward Scissorhands

As usual, there was a lot going on during the Super Bowl on February 7. Overzealous referees. A streaker in a neon-pink thong monokini. A sea of fully bandaged The Weeknd clones. But the thing that caught my attention more than anything was… Timothée Chalamet? He's definitely not the first person anyone would expect to pop up during the year's biggest football game (or any football game, let's be honest), but he did — in a full Edward Scissorhands costume, complete with wild, dark hair and pale-as-hell makeup.

Chalamet wasn't actually at the Super Bowl. Rather, he appeared in a commercial for Cadillac, themed around the Tim Burton classic and costarring none other than Winona Ryder herself. Don't get me wrong, there are few things I hate more than when companies use my own nostalgia to sell me stuff (and I love Edward Scissorhands, so this commercial stung particularly deep). I'm also not a member of Chalamet's army of adoring fans, however, I won't lie. Timothée Scissorhands is serving looks.

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

This take on the hair and makeup aren't nearly as extreme as that of the film, with towering, lopsided black hair and a heavily scarred complexion. This commercial simply uses what Chalamet is already working with: a shag of brown, chin-length hair, pale skin, prominent undereye circles, and the general look of malaise.

Cadillac is merely answering the question of what Edward Scissorhands would look like if he went to art school, chain-smoked, and was super into Joy Division. And you know what? I wouldn't be mad if he just looked like that all the time. Timothée, if you're reading this (he isn't but go along with me here), I fully expect this messy hair and eyeliner to make an appearance at your next film premiere. They're definitely better than the mustache. Thank you.

The performance of stainless steel pall ring

Stainless steel pall ring is a new type of filling material that has been improved to improve some of the main shortcomings of the Raschig ring. It is made by opening eight rectangular small windows on the wall of the ordinary Rasch ring, with the small window blades overlapping at the center of the ring and the upper and lower window positions overlapping each other.

The geometric characteristic data of tower packings mainly includes specific surface area, void ratio, filler factor, etc., which are the basic parameters for evaluating the performance of tower packings.

1. The specific surface area per unit volume of filler is called the specific surface area, denoted by a, and its unit is m2/m3. The larger the specific surface area of the filler, the larger the gas-liquid mass transfer area provided. Therefore, the specific surface area is an important indicator for evaluating the performance of fillers.
2. The volume of voids in a unit volume of filling material is called the void fraction, expressed in e and expressed in m3/m3 or %. The larger the porosity of the filler, the greater the ability of gas to pass through and the lower the pressure. Therefore, porosity is another important indicator for evaluating the performance of fillers.
3. The ratio of the specific surface area of the filler to the third power of the porosity, i.e. a/e3, is called the filler factor, expressed in f, and its unit is 1/m. It indicates the fluid mechanics performance of the packing. The smaller the f value, the smaller the flow resistance.

The performance of stainless steel pall ring tower packing mainly depends on below points:

1. Has a large specific surface area (m2/m3 of filler layer);

2. The liquid has good uniform distribution performance on the surface of the filler;

3. The airflow can be evenly distributed in the packing layer;

4. The filler has a large porosity (m3/m3 of filler layer);

5. Under the same operating conditions, the larger the specific surface area of the filler, the more uniform the gas-liquid distribution, and the better the surface wettability, the higher the mass transfer efficiency; The larger the porosity of the filler and the more open the structure, the greater the flux and the lower the pressure drop;

6. The selection of stainless steel ball ring fillers includes determining the type, specification, and material of the filler. The selected filler should not only meet the requirements of the production process, but also reduce equipment investment and operating costs.

Due to its excellent design process, stainless steel pall ring has the characteristics of high flux, reduced pressure, and high efficiency during use. At present, it is used in packed towers in industries such as fertilizers, petrochemical, and environmental protection, and is highly favored by customers due to its long service life and affordable price.

Fluke CableIQ™ Qualification Tester vs. LinkIQ™ Cable+Network Tester

In 2007, Fluke Networks created the cable qualification market with the introduction of the CableIQ Qualification Tester. Certification is essential for building owners who need to ensure that their contractors have installed a cabling system that meets TIA and ISO standards and will support both today’s networks and tomorrow’s — but network cable qualification testers were priced out of reach for network maintenance teams. CableIQ tested cabling against network standards, such as 1000BASE-T, and provided documentation that showed what the cable was capable of.

After 15 years, it’s no longer possible for us to manufacture the CableIQ — but we have a better solution: the LinkIQ Cable + Network Tester. If you’ve been thinking about purchasing or replacing a CableIQ, here’s what you should know about the LinkIQ.

Mark Mullins of Fluke Networks demonstrates the differences between the CableIQ and the LinkIQ

7 things to know about switching to the LinkIQ

1. No coaxial testing

CableIQ offered testing for 75 Ω coaxial cable, which the LinkIQ does not. For those who need to test coax, our MicroScanner™2 can test 50, 75, and 93 Ω coaxial cables (at less than half the price of the CableIQ).

2. Modern user interface

The CableIQ’s 2.5-inch monochrome backlit display was nice for a tester in its price range (back before smartphones), but most users today are much happier with the high-resolution color display of the LinkIQ. One example of the value of this display is the “cable speedometer” (see image below), which makes it easy to see what the cable is capable of. And the touchscreen keyboard of the LinkIQ is faster than the four arrows on the CableIQ when it’s time to enter text or cable identifiers.

The LinkIQ’s “cable speedometer” shows clearly what a cable is capable of.

3. Supports today’s network standards

When the CableIQ was launched, 1 Gig Ethernet was the fastest thing on copper. Today the world is moving much faster, so the LinkIQ adds 2.5, 5, and 10 Gig cable qualifications.

4. Switch port testing

Both testers can tell you if you’re plugged into an Ethernet port, but the LinkIQ takes it to today’s speeds, recognizing 2.5, 5, and 10 Gig-capable switch ports. And the LinkIQ adds valuable information about the switch itself: name, IP address, port number, and VLAN. This information helps solve problems where the user is plugged into the wrong switch or port, or the switch is improperly configured.

5. Network Connectivity Testing

LinkIQ can be set up to ping an IPv4 or v6 device, then it displays the results of 4 pings, including response time. This can determine if the network can provide access to key servers or services. The LinkIQ’s address can be set manually or via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). This not only helps debug DHCP problems but allows the user to see the gateway and Directory Name Services (DNS) servers in use.

6. Power over Ethernet

When CableIQ hit the market, Power over Ethernet (PoE) had just started to show up in networks. CableIQ can sense some installations of PoE, mostly as a warning that it should be disconnected to prevent damaging the tester. LinkIQ is built for today’s PoE world, certified by the Ethernet Alliance for compatibility with all current IEEE PoE standards: 802.3af, at, and bt. Not only is it safe to connect, but it will also display the power levels offered by the switch (up to Class 8 or 72 watts), which pairs are powered, and whether the source is single- or dual-signature. To confirm that power is available, the LinkIQ places a load on the switch and ensures that adequate voltage is present. If you’re installing PoE devices, such as access points or cameras, these features can save hours of trial-and-error troubleshooting.

7. LinkWare™ PC Reporting

CableIQ offered its own documenting and reporting package, the CableIQ Reporter. LinkIQ is compatible with LinkWare PC, our industry-leading reporting package that supports our certification testers — even those that were obsoleted before the launch of CableIQ! Tens of thousands of electricians and technicians use LinkWare Live regularly; the single application for storing and reporting all your work makes life much easier.

In addition to its key advantages, LinkIQ also offers several smaller conveniences: a rechargeable battery that’s compatible with standard USB-C chargers, a one-button control that automates the testing process, user support in 12 languages, and a strap to hang it up while you’re working.

Check out LinkIQ’s differences for yourself.

Fluted Thick Wall Glass Candle Jar – Amber 350mls

This is a very strong, thick glass jar and complies with ASTM 2179 AND 2147 testing methods. (Ensures glass is able to withstand heat and has no cracks or fractures)

Measurements: Height 7.5cm, Width 11cm.

Approximate Volume: 350mls

Finish: Amber inner spray*

* As theses candle jars have undergone a water soluble paint finish, (rather than a solvent finish) they are more prone to scratching, so please take care when handling the jars. Washing, soaking and immersing the candle jars in soapy water will soften and deteriorate the finish. Use only a DRY – soft cloth (microfibre is best) to remove dust, prior to filling. The water soluble paint finish performs just like coloured glass during burning.

Fly ash in superhydrophobic coatings

A recent study presents the high-valued utilisation of fly ash for preparing mechanically robust and superhydrophobic coatings.

Fly ash (FA) is an industrial solid waste which adds burden to the environment.  A new paper proposes a novel and facile way to reutilise varisized FA particles to prepare superhydrophobic coatings which exhibit excellent water-repellency and mechanical wear resistance. The FA particles undergo chemical modification (MFA), then physically mixing with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and finally spraying or dipping to obtain the nano/micro, nano-micro, and nano-micro-submillimeter hydrophobic/superhydrophobic surfaces (MFA@PDMS) on versatile substrates.

Superhydrophobic even after abrasion

The results of SEM, FITR and contact angle indicate that the surface of FA was roughened after modification and the wettability of MFA particles transferred from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. The prepared nano-micro MFA@PDMS coating remains superhydrophobic even after 60 times unidirectional abrasion under 500 g weight, due to the fact that the presence of polydimethylsiloxane enhanced the binding force between inter-particles as well as particle-substrate.

The study has been published in Progress in Organic Coatings, Volume 176, March 2023.
