Cody Reacts to Roman Reigns Saying AEW Is Not Competition to WWE

Cody spoke with Sport1 in Germany for a new intveriew discussing AEW, his post-WWE boom period and more. Some highlights are below:
On talent in AEW wrestlers who are of the curve: “There are people who are definitely ahead of the curve considering they have never been on TV: Darby Allin, for example, or Kris Statlander. I didn’t know who Kris Statlander was a month ago. Now I can’t imagine AEW without her. She’s an incredibly special talent and we want to cultivate that. I’ve been really impressed with so much of our roster with how they’ve taken doing live television.”
AEW combining old school and new school: “They say in wrestling: What’s old is new. There is so much of the territory wrestling and even pre-Crockett, pre-television wrestling, that has so many great stories and elements to bring to the squared circle and tell a story within the ropes. To be able to do that on worldwide television is huge. But we also have to do our best not to be a parody of what’s old. Not to be nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. You have to give people the buffet: some old, some new. We are melting those worlds. I like Memphis Wrestling, Southern wrestling, I revel in that old school, but not lazy old school – the diligent, committed old school. If you mash that up with the new school and create something new, like Darby Allin does or MJF: People will let you know how much they love it.”
Chris Jericho: “You don’t want to praise Chris, because he’s such an asshole, but you have to give him props: Every week Chris Jericho does something that reminds me of how important he is to the company. Every week. He’s a huge part of this.”
His popularity boost after leaving WWE: “I don’t think I expected it. The truth is: I am very honest to myself when it comes to my spot on the card. When AEW came to fruition, I was rising up and I was being greeted so generously by its fandom. But if you compare it to fishing: That’s a bite and I’m not gonna let go of that. That’s what wrestling is about. The beautiful thing about AEW: Everybody thinks that way, everybody wants to be at the top, but everyone’s doing it the right way: by performance.”
On Roman Reigns saying it’s “generous” to call AEW competition: “To Roman’s point: He is very, very smart, he has WrestleMania main events under his belt, he has incredible talent. I think at the time, a lot of people were…I don’t wanna say naive. People were turning away from it, but there’s no turning away now. WWE’s on a 49 year head start and I tip my hat for that. But what we’re doing is to build upon what fans have been talking about for 20 years, what they want from a wrestling product and what perhaps wasn’t delivered to them. We want to be the alternative. If that means stepping into competition: So be it. It’s better to have competition, for me, for Roman, for everybody.”
On Bret Hart’s popularity in Germany: “When Bret Hart came to Germany in the 1990s, it was BeatleMania – and the beautiful thing is: Then, WWF didn’t know why, now we have the data, we can determine and understand why someone is moving the needle. […] I think, Bret was more of an athlete, he was presenting a more reality-based wrestling instead of the overly dramatic wrestling. I love Hulk Hogan, I love the Ultimate Warrior, but Bret was providing more grit, grind and hard-hitting – and consistency. I think that was more respected in Germany. Hopefully when we come, we’ll have a Bret Hart of our own.” Click Here: all stars nrl rugby jersey

Pampero Firpo Passes Away At The Age of 89

A series of posts from his daughter on Twitter revealed that famed Argentinian/American wrestler Pampero Firpo has passed away at the age of 89. Firpo, real name Juan Kachmanian, made appearances for a variety of promotions from 1953 to 1986. He wrestled for WWC, Big Time Wrestling, NWA Hollywood and even the WWWF, before it was the WWF. After his retirement, he spent 25 years working for the USPS in San Jose.
In a note of trivia, Firpo is the one who created the catchphrase “Ohhh yeah!”, before it was adopted and popularized by the Macho Man Randy Savage.
His daughter Mary wrote on Twitter: “Pampero Firpo: My beloved father, Pampero Firpo, (Juan Kachmanian), passed away today just a few months shy of his 90th birthday. As a professional wrestler for over 30 years, he thrilled fans around the world, wrestling in 21 different countries across 5 continents. At home, he was loving, generous, and protective. He was faithful to God, devoted to his family, and made friends wherever he went. At the end, he expressed gratitude and peace for his extraordinary life well-lived. Thank you to his fans, friends, and colleagues who have shared your memories, friendship, love, prayers, and support with my dad and our family. It means the world to us. Notes on Matt Hardy, Priscilla Kelly, Kris Statlander, and Brian Pillman Jr.

– Kris Statlander recently spoke with Alicia Atout and discussed how she felt after signing with AEW, and how WWE was also interested in her.
On how she felt after signing with AEW:
“There’s a lot of thoughts going through my mind because the whole thing with WWE was interested in me also, so there’s a lot of stress with me because I didn’t know what I was going to do, I didn’t know what was the right choice. And you would think that it’s a dream come true for anybody to be offered a contract, but for me, getting signed was never an actual, legit goal of mine in wrestling, so I was like, ‘Oh, am I going to be happy, is this going to be something I want to do?’ So I was very nervous, I was very stressed about it, but I am thoroughly enjoying all my time I’ve been with AEW and all the opportunities they’ve given me so far and I have no regrets about it. So all is well.”

Speaking of Statlander…

Brian Pillman Jr. has made the move to the middleweight division, effective immediately. With the intention of climbing the rankings and challenging for the World Middleweight Championship, Pillman has high hopes for winning his first singles title in the league.
Standing in his way on the road to a title match: Jimmy Havoc and Priscilla Kelly.
A vicious and cunning duo, Havoc and Priscilla have a history of violence in the league dating back nearly two years when this unholy union first united.
A sinister force looking to put a reckoning on the division and challenge for the title himself, Havoc thrives on the misery of others.
With Pillman entering the 205 pound and under division, league officials quickly moved to make this match, arguably one of the biggest bouts within the middleweight division.
With both men jockeying to fast track a title bout, this match has championship implications.
Great Britain’s top ranked middleweight poses a challenge for Pillman, with Priscilla Kelly a wildcard in every encounter, Pillman will have to remain vigilant and mindful of outside forces ringside… including the trio known as Injustice.
