What Shutdown? 82 Percent Of Small Businesses Are ‘Unaffected’ By Federal Lapse, Study Says

Most small businesses are “unaffected” by the federal government shutdown that is stretching into its fifth week, according to a poll from the Job Creators Network (JCN).

JCN surveyed 427 of its members, all small business owners, from Jan. 16-22 and released the results Tuesday. JCN reported that 82 percent of small business owners have not noticed any impact on their operations since the shutdown began Dec. 22. Roughly Seven percent of respondents said they were “somewhat affected,” and another seven percent said they were “very affected.”

“There’s no doubt that this is disruptive to the federal employees who are missing paychecks, but the impact on small business nationally is still fairly limited,” JCN President and CEO Alfredo Ortiz said in a statement.

“We don’t want to minimize the problems this is causing for some small businesses and federal employees, but it certainly isn’t the national economic disaster that the news coverage makes it seem,” Ortiz said. “The effects of the shutdown are so far confined to government contractors and businesses that serve communities with large concentrations of government employees.”

The JCN survey also questioned small business owners on the media’s coverage of the shutdown. 93 percent of shutdown coverage is biased against President Donald Trump and Republicans. Less than five percent of respondents said the coverage was fair, according to poll data.

“Small business owners believe almost universally that the news media is failing to present the story in a balanced way,” Ortiz said.

The shutdown as affected roughly 800,000 federal workers. Federal worker unions are suing the Trump administration over the shutdown and Democrat lawmakers have taken part in several union protests to position themselves on the side of workers during the shutdown and in the lead up to the 2020 election.

Congress overwhelmingly passed bipartisan legislation Jan. 11 approving backpay to all federal employees who have continued to work through the shutdown even though their regularly scheduled paychecks have been interrupted.

The federal shutdown will likely have a noticeable impact on the U.S. economy, and that impact will grow larger as the shutdown continues. Economists speculate that the shutdown may end a streak of job growth lasting 99 straight months, the longest in U.S. history.

Black Friday Online Sales Break Records

by Henry Rodgers

Online sales during Black Friday hit an all-time high in 2018, reaching over $6.2 billion in sales — a massive increase to the previous year.

There was a 23 percent increase compared to 2017’s $5.03 billion, according to a Saturday report from Adobe Analytics. The numbers show many consumers are staying home to shop instead of heading to crowded malls or stores, most of which have long lines on Black Friday.

“Retailers have done their part to build better mobile experiences for consumers and turning nearly 10 percent more smartphone visitors into buyers this Black Friday versus last,” Taylor Schreiner, the director of Adobe Digital Insights, said to Fox Business.

Numerous incidents of chaotic shopping experiences were reported Friday, which contribute to the historic numbers of shoppers who bought online.

Record numbers are also expected for Cyber Monday according to Schreiner. Adobe is predicting around $7.8 billion in sales.

“Indeed, the entire holiday season continues to see vigorous growth with Cyber Monday expected to be the largest U.S. online shopping day in history,” Schreiner told Fox Business.

Transatlantic Community Imposes Sanctions on Russia for Ukraine Invasion

Today, the United States, EU, and Canada took coordinated action in response to Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine by imposing sanctions on individuals who orchestrated the unjustified November 25 attack on three Ukrainian naval vessels near the Kerch Strait. Additionally, the United States imposed sanctions on six Russian defense firms, including shipbuilding companies; two individuals involved in the November sham “elections” in Russia-controlled eastern Ukraine; and two Russian energy and construction companies operating in Crimea.

“In the five years since Russia started its campaign of aggression against Ukraine, we have stood firmly with our Transatlantic partners in opposition to Russia’s malign and illegal actions, including its attack near the Kerch Strait,” U.S. State Department officials said in a statement. “Russia’s attack represented a dangerous escalation and a violation of international law. We call upon Russia to immediately return to Ukraine the seized vessels and detained crewmembers, and keep the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov open to ships transiting to and from Ukrainian ports.”

“We also call on Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters,” they added.

Officials also said that the international community will not stand by while Russia continues to violate international norms and laws and the Transatlantic community stands united in our efforts to counter Russian aggression.

Five years after its invasion of Ukraine and its attempted annexation of Crimea, Russia continues to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while failing to implement its obligations under the Minsk agreements.  On November 25, 2018, Russian authorities opened fire on and rammed three Ukrainian ships off the coast of Crimea, seizing the ships and capturing 24 Ukrainian crew members, who remain illegally detained in Russia.  Russia also continues its occupation of Crimea, and the Kremlin has also backed illegitimate elections held by Ukrainian separatists in the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic on November 11, 2018.

As a result of today’s designations, all property and interests in property of the designated individuals and entities are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from transacting with them.  Moreover, any entities owned 50 percent or more by these designated persons are also blocked by operation of law.

Trump Effect: Second Quarter GDP Forecast at 4.8% – besting Obama predictions

The Trump economy is not only growing, but accelerating according to the newest forecast from the Atlanta Federal Reserve’s GDPNow model.

The forecast sees consumer spending growth and private fixed investment growth increased from 3.4 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively, to 3.5 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively based on the May employment report, the construction spending report, and the Manufacturing ISM Report – all with better than expected numbers. Those same reports, that came out Friday, pushed the GDP forecast for Q2 to 4.8%.

Just a week ago, the model had pegged Q2 growth at a very positive 4.0%, increased it to 4.7% Thursday then pushed it up again on Friday to 4.8% continuing to beat President Barack Obama‘s prediction that sub 3% growth and American jobs going overseas would be the new normal.

In the 2013 Obama Budget there was a declaration that said: “In the 21st Century, real GDP growth in the United States is likely to be permanently slower than it was in earlier eras,” alluding to the fact that the 3.4% GDP growth the American economy has experienced on average since World War II was a thing of the past. Trump’s “America First” economic agenda has proven that Obamanomics was just another failed set of liberal policies.

Obama also infamously asked about a magic wand when Trump said he would bring jobs back to America by negotiating better deals.[emphasis added]

“Well, how exactly are you going to do that? What exactly are you going to do? There’s no answer to it,” Obama said. “He just says, ‘Well, I’m going to negotiate a better deal.’ Well, what, how exactly are you going to negotiate that? What magic wand do you have?”

President Trump’s magic wand is capitalism, American workers, American ideas that a federal government protects those things, instead of hindering them.

An interesting note – this is the second time that a Republican president pushing Conservative policies rescued the American economy from the clutches of a flailing Democrat. And no, we don’t miss former President Carter either.

New Tactical Vehicles Arrive for Army, Marines

The military’s newest tactical vehicle has started arriving at Army and Marine Corps units for additional field testing. The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program is a joint Army and Marine Corps effort intended to supplement or, in some cases, replace Humvees as the primary tactical vehicle for ground troops.

By the mid-2030s, the Army is expecting to have purchased 49,000 JLTVs and the Marine Corps about 9,000.

The new vehicles are designed to be mechanically reliable, easily maintainable, mobile across all types of terrain, and are prewired to link into current and future tactical communication and data networks.

There were some key design considerations during the development process, including survivability and the ability for the vehicles to be transported by ship and aircraft. The crew protection system is an integrated part of the vehicle design and includes a blast-resistant hull, fire suppression system and rollover protection.

The JLTV is outfitted with an intelligent independent suspension system to allow it to maneuver up to 70 percent faster off-road, which also makes the new vehicles a much plusher ride than the Humvees they’re replacing.

The design includes some conveniences, such as cup holders, extra legroom, electronic mirrors, map reading lights and climate control for the rear seats. Indentations in the seats also allow for added comfort for those wearing personal water carriers on their backs.

Obama Quietly Gives Waivers on Iran Sanctions Mandate

File this one under the “Obama says one thing, and then does another” file of 2012. From NightWatch,  we see that Hillary Clinton’s State Dept., along with President Obama have told another blatant lie to the American and world citizenry concerning the latest “get tough” Iran sanctions  announced with much fanfare back on Nov. 21st, 2011: (emphasis added)

The Obama administration on Tuesday exempted 10 European Union countries and Japan from US economic sanctions because they have significantly reduced their purchases of petroleum from Iran. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton granted waivers to Belgium, Britain, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Japan, meaning that banks and other financial institutions based there will not be hit with penalties under US law for a renewable period of 180 days.

Comment: The exemptions signify that the sanctions against Iran are somehow not aimed at key countries in economic duress and that depend on Iranian oil. This is a curious exemption because the termination of most international banking relations will make it difficult for the Europeans and the Japanese to pay for their oil.

Note: Britain is among the countries that will be allowed to continue to do business with Iran, despite the claimed Obama/Hillary “get tough” sanctions on Iran. This is astounding, in the fact that it was the British that initiated the new “get tough on Iran” policies recently. From the Iran Sanctions link above from Fox News we see the following info-bytes:

The British announced the first measures, declaring they would cut off all  financial ties with Iranian banks to stem the flow of funds for its nuclear and  ballistic missile programs. Britain’s new restrictions included an order that  its financial institutions cease doing business with all Iranian banks,  including the country’s Central Bank. The ban extends to all branches and  subsidiaries of Iranian banks, amounting to an unprecedented British attempt to  cut off an entire country’s banking industry off from the British financial  sector.

The sanctions are aimed at “preventing the Iranian  regime from acquiring nuclear weapons,” British Treasury chief George  Osborne said.

Once again, we see that the Obama administration, in conjunction with Hillary Clinton’s State Dept. propagandists had announced to the world new “get tough sanctions” against Iran to deter their efforts to secure nuclear weapons of mass destruction, yet have already given massive waivers that will allow the British, among other countries, to in fact…. continue to put money into the coffers of the totalitarian regime of Iran, thus allowing them to continue their pathway to effect their stated desires to wipe Israel off the map with nuclear bombs. These fake get tough sanctions on Iran prove once again that Barack Obama is as phony as a three-dollar-bill.
