Joe Gomez admits he would prefer to nail down one position as his own at Liverpool rather than filling in across the back four.

The 22-year-old has been at Anfield for four years now after arriving from Charlton for £3.5million as a raw 18-year-old.

The England man has now made 66 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s men, but just as he inferred when he arrived, he has reiterated his desire to make one position his own.

Gomez, who missed four months of last season with an ankle injury, said at the time he signed for the Reds that he would “like to play centre-back eventually in the coming years”.

Instead though Gomez has been used across the back four by Klopp with Joel Matip often getting the nod to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence last season.

“I’ve played a number of positions over the years I’ve been here,” Gomez told the club’s website.

“I like to excel in one and nail that spot but I’m happy to play wherever for the team and the manager.

“It’s just about development in whatever way I can and doing all the extra bits I can to develop off the pitch as well as on it. Hopefully things fall into place.

“This is my fifth season now and I’ve had a lot of experience at the club and learned a lot here. But I’m still so young, I’ve got so much left to learn. I’ve got to keep developing, keep progressing and stay hungry.”

Gomez is in full pre-season training and gearing up to the start of the campaign – a season which Klopp says has an air of unfinished business about it.

“Definitely. He [Klopp] said that this morning in the meeting,” added Gomez. “We can be happy and proud of the achievement but we’ve got so much more work to do and so many ways to improve as well.

“The Premier League was so close and I think that’s all the motivation we need, that we were so close but so far at the same time in the fact that we didn’t get it.

“It’s something we want to get this year and to do so we can’t get complacent or dwell on what happened last season, we have to hit the ground running again now.”

The Reds have two pre-season fixtures this week with a game against Tranmere at Prenton Park on Thursday, before tackling Bradford City on Sunday.

“Obviously it is as intense as you’d expect when you first come back, a lot of running and dusting the cobwebs off,” Gomez added.

“But it feels good, it’s nice to be back. It was nice to end on such a high last season and we just want to carry on where we left off and keep the momentum going.”

Ander Herrera had “already made the decision to play in Paris” by the time Manchester United tried to tempt him to stay.

Herrera joined PSG for a football-f**king amount of cash earlier this month, bringing to an end his five-year spell with United.

The Spaniard was reported to have felt ‘disrespected’ by the club’s offer of a pay cut, but “differences” over his “importance” within Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s “project” played a part.

“I don’t like looking at the past,” Herrera told Marca. “But there were differences regarding the project and my importance within it.”

Not British, young or buzzy enough, fella.

“I was very happy, I have a lot to thank the club for, the fans and also Solskjaer. He did a lot for me to stay, but things didn’t happen. They arrived late and, by then, I’d already made the decision to play in Paris.

“I am very happy to have made that decision because I am enjoying this magnificent city, this beautiful stadium and this club, which has a glamour few can match.

“To leave United, the biggest team in England, you need something like PSG, which is the biggest in France. I could not play in another English club. PSG is a group in continuous development and which is in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

“I visited it as a tourist and I fell in love. Now I have the chance to play for his team, which has a very high ceiling and goals, and which has some of the best players in the world.”

Manchester United are ‘one step away’ from signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio.

Milinovic-Savic has re-emerged as a United target after being heavily linked to the club last summer.

Jose Mourinho even went as far as to personally scout the midfielder during his time as manager, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revisiting the possibility of signing him.

The club have been unable to strike a deal for Bruno Fernandes of Sporting Lisbon as yet, and have thus identified Milinkovic-Savic as a viable alternative.

SportMediaSet say the deal is ‘one step away’ from completion, with Lazio president Claudio Lotito ‘finally persuaded’ to sell ‘the most precious jewel’.

Gazzetta are ‘ready to put €75m euros on the plate’ for the 24-year-old – thank you to Sport Witness – but that Lotito ‘wants €120m’.

Wayne Rooney has urged Jadon Sancho to remain at Borussia Dortmund for now.

Sancho has been linked with a return to the Premier League after a hugely impressive season in the Bundesliga following his move from Manchester City.

The England winger was said to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s primary transfer target for Manchester United this summer but the Red Devils’ failure to secure Champions League football is said to have made Sancho wary of making the move to Old Trafford just yet.

Former United captain Rooney reckons Sancho should sit tight in Dortmund while he gets the regular football he needs at this stage in his development.

“Dortmund is a great club with great fans, they trust their young players and you can see that in Sancho and the progress he has made in the last 12 months,” Rooney told Bild.

“Now Jadon has to ask himself whether he would get the playing time he gets in Dortmund when he moves to England, or would he just sit on the bench?

“Playing time is so important for a young player like Jadon, so if he gets the most playing time in Dortmund, he should stay there.”

The South American football confederation said questioning the integrity of the Copa America is “unacceptable” after Lionel Messi alleged Argentina were victims of “corruption” in their 2-1 win over Chile.

Messi saw red towards the end of the first half of their third-place play-off in Sao Paolo and refused to take part in the medal ceremony.

The Barcelona star was dismissed following a confrontation with former Cardiff midfielder Gary Medel, who was also shown a red card.

Messi appeared to have been hard done by, with Chile defender Medel appearing to push his head towards the Argentina playmaker as they squared up, chest to chest.

The Argentina captain suggested he had been singled out following his comments over the “crazy” officiating in the wake of their 2-0 semi-final defeat by hosts Brazil in Belo Horizonte.

“We don’t need to be part of the corruption that we’ve suffered at this tournament,” Messi said, as quoted by Spanish media outlet AS.

“Medel is always right at the limit. With a yellow that would have been the end of it for both of us, but well, maybe what I said recently had an impact.

“What’s important is that the team finished well in the tournament. Maybe this was ordered and I ended up suffering because of what I said.”

In the aftermath, CONMEBOL said a “fundamental pillar of fair play is to accept the results with loyalty and respect”.

Although it does not mention Messi by name, the statement said: “The same goes for refereeing decisions, which are human and will always be improvable.

“It is unacceptable that as a result of incidents typical in competitions, involving 12 teams, all on equal terms, unfounded accusations have been launched that lack the truth and question the integrity of the Copa America.

“These accusations represent a lack of respect for the competition, all the participating players and the hundreds of professionals of CONMEBOL, an institution that since 2016 has been working tirelessly to make transparent, professionalise and develop South American football.”

Messi had helped set up an early goal for Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero, with Argentina going 2-0 up through Paulo Dybala.

Chile were handed a way back into the match following another controversial VAR review which resulted in a penalty being awarded after Argentina’s Giovani Lo Celso was adjudged to have fouled Charles Aranguiz. Arturo Vidal dispatched the spot-kick.

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Kleberson has told Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to consider signing Dani Alves this summer.

The 34-year-old left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season and is still yet to sign a deal with a new club, though at the moment the strongest links appear to be with Antonio Conte’s Inter.

Alves has had spells in Spain, Italy and France – winning 42 trophies overall in the process – but is yet to try his luck in the Premier League.

Kleberson believes that the three-time Champions League winner would be a perfect signing for Liverpool, despite the fact they already have Trent Alexander-Arnold in that position.

“I wanted to get Dani Alves to join me in the MLS! He’s a phenomenal player with amazing quality,” he is quoted as saying by the Express.

“I feel maybe could fit in well at Liverpool and Klopp would like him as a style of player.

“He’s very technical, fast and has an incredible temperament in the big games. He’s a winner.”

 

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata will join Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal at the end of the 2019-20 season, the Premier League club have announced.

The 26-year-old is currently on an 18-month loan with Atletico, which began in January, and he will remain in the Spanish capital upon its completion.

The Spain international scored 24 goals in 72 appearances for the Blues after joining from Real Madrid for a fee of around £60million in 2017.

“We would like to thank Alvaro for his contribution and wish him the best of luck for the future,” Chelsea said in a statement on their official website.

Morata’s first-team chances at Stamford Bridge became increasingly limited under Maurizio Sarri and his loan move to Atletico earlier this year appeared to signal the end of his short-lived Premier League career.

However, with Chelsea currently serving a transfer ban which they are appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, it was not clear whether new boss Frank Lampard would be willing to let Morata leave the club.

But, a deal has now been struck with Atletico, for whom Morata scored six goals in 15 appearances during the second half of the 2018-19 campaign as the Rojiblancos finished second in LaLiga.

Morata took to Twitter to declare himself “happy” to be remaining with Diego Simeone’s side.

He said: “Happy. It’s official. Now I will have time to return with work and goals all the effort of the club and the affection of the fans. Thank you!!!”

Fabinho has picked Virgil van Dijk out as the player who has impressed him the most since arriving at Liverpool last summer.

The Brazil international did not start a match for Liverpool until the Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea in late September and by the start of November had played just six times, four of which were short substitute appearances.

But from that point on he got a run in the team and December’s 3-1 victory over United, which ended Jose Mourinho’s reign at Old Trafford, was the game which proved to be the turning point.

Since then he has performed a pivotal role as the holding midfielder in the team and put in his best display in the 4-0 Champions League semi-final, second-leg comeback against Barcelona, made even more impressive by his level of control after being booked early on.

And since arriving from Monaco last summer for £39m, Fabinho has been particularly impressed by the commanding performances of Van Dijk.

“One guy who impresses a lot is van Djik. I hadn’t particularly seen so many games of him. In the games I saw, I focused on the midfield there, I didn’t see much of him,” said Fabinho told Globo in their Hoje Sim Podcast.

“And man, since the preseason I arrived, following him like that, the guy is sovereign. No one beats him on the air. I think he’s been there for 64 games without being dribbled.

“He’s fast. And it’s funny that it seems like he doesn’t have to make efforts to run. He does it that way, like a big guy, and he easily gets to the ball. Air balls are funny. Because the ball comes and we just hear him shouting ‘VIRGIL’. And you can let it pass, whoever the attacker is.

“Against Manchester [United], he impressed me. Because we were going to play against [Romelu] Lukaku. I thought ‘hey Lukaku has his size, let’s see if he will hold up’. My god. Every air ball, it was ‘VIRGIL’, he would run over. You hear ‘VIRGIL’, you get out of the way, because he will come running over.

“I sit between him and Wijnaldum in the locker room. And Van Dijk is a big child. He just plays, makes jokes. He knows some words in Portuguese. Off the pitch he’s a very good guy. And on the pitch he is the guy who charges the most. Who charges everyone and everyone is like ‘okay’. And he’s not afraid of whoever he screams at. Gives everyone a scolding. He has a thick voice, you can hear him from afar.”

Arsenal will consider including three players as part of a swap deal for Wilfried Zaha, according to reports.

The Gunners had a reported £40million bid for Zaha rejected with The Sun saying Arsenal wanted to pay the fee over five years while asking for ‘a hefty discount’ if they managed to reimburse Crystal Palace early.

That is understood to be nowhere near Palace’s valuation as they want closer to £80million for their most prized asset after selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka for £50m to Manchester United.

Arsenal‘s reported budget is widely reported to be only £40m – 0r £45m depending on which source you read – and the Daily Mirror claims that the Gunners have offered Carl Jenkinson, Calum Chambers and Mohamed Elneny to Palace ‘in the hope it will act as a sweetener’ in a deal for Zaha.

Unai Emery is ‘willing’ to let the trio leave if it means landing Zaha this summer with Jenkinson the one that could be of ‘particular interest’ to Palace having just lost their right-back Wan-Bissaka.

Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol recently hinted that Arsenal’s low budget is a bluff designed to get them a better deal: “Interestingly, we have read that Arsenal’s transfer budget this summer, because they have missed out on the Champions League, is just £45m, plus what they can raise from selling players.

“We have kept reading that, £45m. People are thinking ‘why are Arsenal trying to sign a player who Crystal Palace are saying is worth £80m, when they only have £45m?’

“What I have been told is that it suits Arsenal that people think they only have £45m, because when they get into negotiations over a player, the selling club is going to think Arsenal don’t have much money.

“What I have been told is that this is a bit of a smokescreen and Arsenal can go up to £70m to buy Wilfried Zaha. £70m is the point at which they would walk away.

“A deal that would be worth £70m in total.

“We just have to take it with a pinch of salt that Arsenal only have £45m. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“We are not talking about £300m for Neymar, this is £70m in total. I think Arsenal can do that.”

Manchester United are keen to bring in Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer, according to reports.

This old chestnut is back. The Red Devils were last linked with the Serbian in October while Jose Mourinho was still in charge at Old Trafford with United ‘confident’ they could seal a January deal.

Nothing came of the reported interest in the end with the price demanded by Lazio at one point going above the €150m mark.

However, United‘s interest is apparently back with SportMediaSet (via Sport Witness) claiming that Lazio’s sporting director Iglo Tare has flown to London to ‘settle once and for all’ Milinkovic-Savic’s future.

There are other English clubs understood to be interested – although the report doesn’t state which ones – with Tare there to listen to proposals with United ‘particularly’ interested in Milinkovic-Savic.

The 24-year-old ‘doesn’t really want to stay’ with Serie A side Lazio and United see him as the perfect addition for their midfield ‘revolution’.

Lazio are understood to want €100m for Milinkovic-Savic – who they demanded more for a year ago – but could accept as little as €80m.

The report insinuates that Milinkovic-Savic could be brought in before United sell Paul Pogba after the Serbia international sold his apartment in Rome.
