Carragher: Chelsea’s ‘huge problem’ gives Man Utd advantage

Jamie Carragher has backed Manchester United to finish above Chelsea in the Premier League despite the Blues’ summer spending spree.

Carragher, speaking to TEAMtalk, questioned whether Chelsea can find a winning formula quickly in a summer when they have spent over £200m reshaping their squad.

The Blues have added Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner to their ranks in an eye-catching transfer splurge, yet Carragher is not convinced they will be ready to mix it with champions Liverpool and their nearest rivals Manchester City.

“Chelsea were arguably the most interesting team to watch last season for the neutral as you were never quite sure what you would get from them,” said the Liverpool legend. “They had some big wins, got into the top four, but also had some big defeats.

“Chelsea conceded a lot of goals and score a lot of goals and that to continue this season, even after all their signings this summer.

“They have signed some good players, but getting them all to fit into their team quickly will not be easy and we don’t know how Havertz, Werner and the rest will adapt to English football.

“Also, they still have a huge problem with their goalkeeper and until that is rectified, I don’t see them getting anywhere near Man City or Liverpool, whoever they buy in the top end of the pitch.

“That’s why I would back Manchester United to finish ahead of them again, even though they don’t like they are ready to get anywhere near the 90-95 point target needed to win the title.

“Having Bruno Fernandes for a full season will give them a real chance to make improvements. He has been a revelation since he has come in and as I said a few times about United last season, they were never as far away from being successful as it seemed when they were at their lowest moment.

“We are all guilty of saying a team that is struggling needs five or six players to be competitive, but Fernandes coming into United showed that the addition of one quality player can make a huge difference.

“If United can get Jadon Sancho and a good centre-back, they will be closer to Liverpool and City, but it is hard to see them getting in the mix for the title.”
