CBP Officers Seize Nearly $1 Million in Unreported Currency at Juarez-Lincoln Bridge

LAREDO, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers Juarez-Lincoln Bridge recently seized nearly $1 million in unreported currency hidden within a passenger vehicle during an outbound examination.

“Our frontline CBP officers continue to maintain resolute vigilance in both the inbound and outbound environments and their attention to detail helped to detect a significant load of unreported currency,” said Port Director Alberto Flores, Laredo Port of Entry.  “Large outbound currency seizures like these deny the ability of transnational criminal organizations to profit from alleged illicit activity, impacting them directly.”

Stacks of bills containing $988,550 in unreported currency seized by CBP officers at Laredo Port of Entry during an outbound examination.

CBP officers seized the currency and arrested the driver.  The case was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation. The seizure occurred on Friday, Jan. 25 at Juarez-Lincoln Bridge when a CBP officer conducting outbound examinations selected a 2010 Nissan Maxima driven by a 20-year-old female U.S. citizen for examination. After initial inspection utilizing a non-intrusive imaging systems scan, CBP officers conducted an intensive physical examination and discovered 53 bundles containing a total of $988,550 in unreported currency hidden within the vehicle.

It is not a crime to carry more than $10,000, but it is a federal offense not to declare currency or monetary instruments totaling $10,000 or more to a CBP officer upon entry or exit from the U.S. or to conceal it with intent to evade reporting requirements. Failure to declare may result in seizure of the currency and/or arrest. An individual may petition for the return of currency seized by CBP officers, but the petitioner must prove that the source and intended use of the currency was legitimate.

Five Helpful Tips for Seniors Enrolling in Medicare

As we age, our needs change, especially when it comes to healthcare. By the time we become seniors, age-related illness becomes a very real issue, and income tends to decrease. On the plus side, the focus is on self-care rather than caring for a family.

Medicare health coverage is meant to alleviate healthcare related costs for those 65 years of age and older. However, the enrollment process can be confusing. There are a lot of variables and considerations to keep in mind when signing up. Here are five helpful tips for seniors trying to navigate Medicare to receive the care and coverage they deserve.

Plan Ahead of the Enrollment Period

The enrollment period for Medicare can be confusing, as there are multiple enrollment periods meant for various groups. If you’re trying to figure out how to enroll in medicare initially, you’ll fall under the category of “initial enrollment,” which takes place for three months leading up to your 65th birthday and three months following. The perceived benefit of signing up during the initial enrollment is not having to answer medical questions to do so.

While there are other enrollment periods after, it’s best to plan ahead. Take time to research the options before the enrollment period starts. If you already receive Social Security benefits, you don’t have to take any action; you’ll be enrolled automatically.

Understand the Plans

One of the most challenging aspects of enrolling in Medicare is understanding the various plans, which include Plans A, B, C, and D. Plan A and Plan B are considered the essentials, covering medical costs when ill, such as hospital stays, and preventative medical costs, such as annual wellness visits, respectively.

Plan C and Plan D are considered additional or supplemental coverage options. Plan C combines the offerings of A and B in a way that emulates private coverage. Plan D is meant to assist with covering the costs of prescription medication, which can be significant as we age.

It’s important to understand what each plan offers and what it doesn’t before enrolling, which is why starting to research early is critical. Don’t hesitate to ask someone for help with the research process.

Know Your Doctor’s Policy

If you have a doctor with whom you’re comfortable, it’s important to determine whether or not they accept Medicare. If they don’t, you’ll be tasked with finding a new doctor, which can add months to the decision process. For some, that’s the deciding factor in choosing not to enroll in Medicare. If you’re considering Medicare, talk to your doctor well in advance of the enrollment period.

List Your Important Questions

While you research, take note of your questions that you need to ask Medicare directly. It can be challenging to get through and get your questions answered, so having a list can help you keep track of everything in a constructive way. Try to schedule your call during midweek at midday, as mornings are the busiest times. There are a lot of helpful online resources to review before calling to get your questions answered.

Don’t Stress

The earlier you start with the research process, the less stress you will experience. As stress can be detrimental to your health, worrying about Medicare is counterproductive.

Remember, if you don’t like the plan you have, you can change it during the general enrolment period. If you have special considerations– such as moving or losing health coverage– you’ll be able to use a special enrollment period.

Remember to review your plan each year and determine if it’s still adequate based on your personal requirements. By being proactive and taking the time to learn about the various options, you’ll be able to determine whether or not Medicare is right for you and choose the plan that fits best.

COMMENTARY
“Our team delivered record earnings per share of $0.44 which was in line with our expectation and keeps us on track to maintain our full year earnings guidance,” said Jim Snee, chairman of the board, president, and chief executive officer. “We were particularly pleased with the bottom-line performance from Refrigerated Foods as our experienced team grew our value-added profits while navigating through volatile markets. Our balanced business model helped mitigate higher freight costs and a difficult commodity environment.”

“We delivered record sales led by our Refrigerated Foods and International segments. Strong top-line growth from brands such as Hormel® Natural Choice® and Hormel® Bacon 1TM and international sales of products such as Skippy® peanut butter was complemented by the strategic acquisitions of Fontanini, Columbus Craft Meats, and Ceratti,” Snee said. “Our core center store portfolio of brands such as SPAM®Dinty Moore®, and Herdez® also showed strong growth this quarter.”

SEGMENT HIGHLIGHTS – SECOND QUARTER

Refrigerated Foods

  • Volume up 6%; Organic volume1 down 1%
  • Net sales up 14%; Organic net sales1 flat to last year
  • Segment profit up 18%

Volume and sales increases benefited from the inclusion of the Columbus and Fontanini acquisitions in addition to strong retail sales of Hormel® Natural Choice® products and foodservice sales of Hormel® pepperoni and Hormel® Bacon 1TM fully cooked bacon. Organic volume decreased due to lower hog harvest volumes.

Refrigerated Foods delivered segment profit growth of 18% despite a 25% decline in commodity profits, a double-digit increase in per-unit freight expenses, and higher advertising expenses. Strong results were delivered by our branded retail and foodservice businesses in addition to the inclusion of the Fontanini and Columbus acquisitions.

Grocery Products

  • Volume down 2%
  • Net sales down 1%
  • Segment profit down 12%

Low-single-digit sales growth in our core Grocery Products portfolio, led by Wholly Guacamole® dips, the SPAM® family of products, Herdez® salsas, Dinty Moore® stew, and Hormel® chili, was more than offset by significant sales declines across the CytoSport portfolio and our contract manufacturing business. Total Grocery Products segment profit was down due to increased promotional activity and lower volumes at CytoSport and lower earnings from our contract manufacturing business.

Jennie-O Turkey Store

  • Volume down 3%
  • Net sales down 4%
  • Segment profit down 34%

Sales declines were primarily due to lower whole bird pricing and volume as a result of continued oversupply of turkeys in the industry and excess meat in cold storage. Sales declines of whole birds were partially offset by increased retail sales, led by Jennie-O® lean ground turkey and Jennie-O® Oven Ready® products. Segment profit decreased as a result of lower profits from whole bird and commodity sales, double-digit increases in per-unit freight costs, and increased advertising.

International & Other

  • Volume up 14%; Organic volume1 up 1%
  • Net sales up 22%; Organic net sales1 up 8%
  • Segment profit up 6%

International volume and sales increases were related to strong results in China, increased export sales, and the inclusion of the Ceratti business. Earnings increased on improved profitability in China due to lower raw material costs but were partially offset by higher advertising expenses and lower branded export margins.

While we are starting to see early signs of a recovery in the turkey industry, we expect Jennie-O Turkey Store to continue showing earnings declines for the remainder of this year.”

“We are making excellent progress on the integrations of our recent acquisitions. These efforts, in combination with continued execution of our strategic imperatives, will ensure we remain in a position to deliver strong growth in the future.”

Michael Cohen Puts Dagger In The Heart Of Steele Dossier During Congressional Testimony

Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen denied during congressional testimony Wednesday that he visited Prague during the 2016 presidential campaign, as the infamous Steele dossier alleges.

“Have you ever been to Prague?” South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman, a Republican, asked Cohen during a House Oversight and Reform Committee.

I’ve never been to Prague,” said Cohen, adding: “I’ve never been to the Czech Republic.”

Cohen’s testimony, which he gave under oath, would seem to settle one of the most significant allegations made by Christopher Steele, the former British spy who wrote a dossier of anti-Trump research on behalf of the Clinton campaign and DNC.

Steele’s 35-page report is a roadmap of sorts for the allegation that the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government to influence the election.

Steele claimed that Cohen visited Prague in August 2016 to meet with Kremlin officials to discuss making non-traceable payments to hackers.

Cohen denied the claim after BuzzFeed published the dossier on Jan. 10, 2017. Cohen’s claim also undercuts numerous news reports that claimed evidence supports the dossier.

McClatchy has published two reports that claimed that the special counsel’s office has evidence that Cohen visited Prague. Cohen has denied both.

Cohen began cooperating with the special counsel’s investigation in July 2018. He has been sentenced to three years in prison on various charges, including tax evasion, bank fraud, and making false statements to Congress.

In his testimony Wednesday, he said that he has no evidence that President Trump or members of the campaign colluded with Russia.

Why America Was Right To Drop The Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima

70 years ago, a USAAF B-29 bomber dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, another bomber dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki. Five days thereafter, Japan surrendered unconditionally, thus bringing World War 2 – by far the bloodiest and most destructive conflict in world history – to an end.

Since then, many leftists have harshly criticized the US for dropping these atomic bombs. They have falsely claimed that it was inhuman and unnecessary. Some leftist propagandists, such as Ward Wilson (an ardent and ignorant anti-nuclear hack at the Monterey Institute) even falsely claim that it was Soviet entry into the war against Japan, and not the atomic bomb, that caused Tokyo to surrender unconditionally.

But these leftists are blatantly lying. Their claims are utterly false. In this article, on the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombings, CDN provides you with an exclusive, thorough analysis of why the use of the atomic bomb was fully justified, and why it was the Hiroshima bombings, and NOT the Soviet entry into the war in the Pacific, that spurred Japan’s unconditional surrender.

Japan Was Preparing to Fight to the Death – Not To Surrender

Let’s start with the historic background first.

At the end of July 1945 – and even as early as the spring of 1945 – it was clear that Japan had utterly lost WW2, just like Germany had. It had lost everything except Manchuria, parts of mainland China, Korea, Sakhalin, the Kuriles, and the main Japanese islands. The US and its allies were marching from victory to victory. By June 22nd, American troops had completely overrun the strategically important island of Okinawa (an ideal base to jumpstart a invasion of the main Japanese islands).

In addition, as Wilson himself admits, Japan was starved of resources due to an absolute Allied naval blockade and successful US submarine sinkings of Japanese merchant ships, had sustained enormous casualties in the last several years, and had suffered massive conventional firebombings (notably with the use of napalm) by the USAAF. Yet, none of that was able to cause Hideki Tojo’s government in Tokyo to surrender.

Immediately after Germany surrendered unconditionally, the Allies urged Japan to do likewise, or it would suffer horrible consequences. Yet, Japan stubbornly refused. The most it was willing to do was to surrender conditionally. And what conditions did it demand? That, for one thing, it be allowed to keep China and some of the other lands it had conquered. (Yes, the same China where they had committed war crimes on a scale unheard of in human history, even in German-occupied Europe.)

Yes, you’ve read that correctly: even with their backs against the wall, even with their cities being firebombed and their navy on its knees, the Japanese were STILL deluding themselves that they could keep China and their other takings in mainland Asia. They were STILL refusing to surrender unconditionally as of August 5th, 1945.

It was not until the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that the Japanese warlords and Emperor Hirohito finally understood how hopeless their situation was. On August 14th, they communicated to the US government their willingness to surrender unconditionally.

No, The Soviet Union Did Not Cause Japan To Surrender

Wilson and some other anti-nuclear propagandists falsely claim that it was the Soviet Union’s entry into the war on Japan, not the atomic bombings, that caused Japan to surrender. But they’re dead wrong, as always. The Soviet Union did not cause Japan to give up; the atomic bombings did.

Let’s recount the chronology and the basic facts here.

On August 6th, the US bombed Hiroshima. On August 8th, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan but did not actually begin hostilities yet. It did not do so until the next day, August 9th – by which time the US had already dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki.

It’s a simple chronology:

August 6th: the US drops the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Japan doesn’t surrender yet.

August 8th: the USSR declares war on Japan. Tokyo STILL doesn’t surrender yet.

August 9th: the US drops the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. The Emperor and the government realize the massive destruction of these two cities.

August 14th: the Japanese government announces it’s willingness to surrender without conditions. President Truman accepts Japan’s surrender.

Seeing the destruction of these two towns – unequalled by anything else in history – the Japanese warlords finally understood how hopeless their situation was, and on August 14th, they surrendered. By that time, the Soviet invasion of Manchuria was still in its beginning stages and was barely producing its first results; it continued until August 20th.

Armchair General Wilson and other anti-nuclear propagandists claim that the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, Korea, Sakhalin, and the Kuriles was the decisive factor because, supposedly, these areas were of more strategic importance than Okinawa and the main Japanese islands or the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki located on these islands.

This is one of the most ludicrous claims ever attempted. How ignorant of military matters and how stupid does one have to be to claim that the loss of Okinawa and the defense of the main Japanese islands was of lesser importance than Sakhalin, the Kuriles, Korea, and Manchuria?

Such claims only prove Ward Wilson’s utter ignorance of military matters and his unlimited stupidity (rivalled only by his unbrindled arrogance).

To realize just how important Okinawa is to the Japanese, compared to Sakhalin and the Kuriles, just remember this: after WW2, the US took sovereignty of Okinawa (which is an ideal base for military operations anywhere in East Asia). The Japanese continually pressured the US to restore Okinawa to Japanese sovereignty until, in 1972, Washington agreed. (The US still keeps several military bases on the island, because it’s an ideal base to conduct any operations against any opponent in East Asia, be it North Korea, China, or anyone else).

On the other hand, the Japanese have, since 1945, made only weak, half-hearted pleas to Moscow asking to get the Kuriles back – and are not even asking for Sakhalin. They are able to live without these islands quite well and are in no hurry to get them back.

So if you want to know how important these islands are to the Japanese, just ask the Japanese themselves.

Ward Wilson – probably realizing how weak and preposterous his claim is – has therefore recently claimed that the Soviet Union was about to invade the main Japanese islands.

But that claim is just as preposterous, because the Soviet Union simply had NO amphibious capability to mount any invasion of the main Japanese islands (or any islands) on any serious scale, and therefore could not even threaten to do so. Taking the almost undefended Kuriles and Sakhalin was one thing; ferrying hundreds of troops to, and invading, the main Japanese islands would’ve been something different altogether. The Soviet Army had NO capability to mount such an invasion; only the US military did. Emperor Hirohito knew it, the warlords in Tokyo knew it, the Truman administration knew it, Joseph Stalin knew it, everyone familiar with amphibious warfare and the Soviet Army’s capabilities knew it.

Even the US, British, and Canadian navies faced a daunting task in mounting an amphibious invasion of Europe in 1944, while also conducting an island-hopping strategy in Asia against Japan. This strained the world’s largest amphibious assault fleet to the limits. The Soviet Union had NO such fleet. It had NONE of the amphibious assets that would be required to mount a serious invasion of the Japanese islands – which would’ve required the ferrying of hundreds of thousands of troops, their weapons (including tanks), and their supplies across the sea of Japan. All of that under air cover from fighters operating off aircraft carriers… of which the Soviet Union had NONE at the time.

Even today, Russia doesn’t have an amphibious assault fleet that would be required for a major amphibious invasion of a foreign country. The Soviet Union never had built (and never even had the capability to build) such a fleet.

Wilson, however, persists in his utterly false claims by saying that Moscow’s entry into the war against Japan eliminated the Soviet Union as an “intermediary” who might’ve negotiated an honorable, conditional surrender for Japan (at least according to Japanese warlords’ hopes).

But the Soviet Union could have NEVER been an “intermediary” between Japan and an America stubbornly demanding Tokyo’s total and unconditional surrender – and going so far as to use nuclear weapons against Japan to obtain that surrender. There was never any chance for the USSR to “mediate” between Tokyo and Washington. America’s demand of Japan’s unconditional and total surrender was non-negotiable. The nuclear bombings disabused the Japanese warlords of any dream of the Kremlin succeeding in mediating betweek Tokyo and Washington.

Was It Immoral?

As for the claim that dropping the atomic bombs was immoral, it’s also a lie, for a simple reason: it was the Japanese who started the war in Asia (and against the United States) in the first place. They were the aggressors – not the US. And unlike the US, they committed massive war crimes, on a scale not seen anywhere else in all human history – not even in German-occupied Germany: massive slaying of entire villages, cities, and provinces, burying people alive en masse, and of course, massive rapes and massive use of sex slaves.

Not only that, but 70 years after the war, they STILL haven’t fullheartedly and clearly apologized for their war crimes, let alone paid any reparations or restitutions to the countries they committed aggression against or the victims of their war crimes and their families.

Not only that, but 70 years after the war, they STILL maintain a mausoleum (the Yasukuni shrine) where they worship the war criminals who organized these butcheries. Can you imagine Germany maintaining a shrine to Adolf Hitler and his fellow war criminals Hermann Goering, Heinrich Himmler, and Reinhard Heydrich?

Not only that, but their current Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, frequently visits the shrine to pay hommage to those war criminals (and he wonders why other East Asian countries are hostile to Japan). Can you imagine the German chancellor visiting the graves of Nazi war criminals? (Top Nazi war criminals don’t have a gravesite; their bodies were cremated and their ashes spread over a wide area to ensure they would never have a gravesite or shrine; Hitler’s body was cremated by the Germans and the ashes were dumped into sewers by the Soviets.)

And yet, the US – at its own expense – still defends Japan against countries that threaten it, including a nuclear-armed China and a nuclear-armed North Korea.

Last, but certainly not least, by using nuclear weapons, President Truman made sure that an Allied invasion of the Japanese islands would not have to happen. Before the atomic bomb was used, the Japanese were preparing to defend their main islands to the last man, woman, and child. They were teaching children how to fight and preparing them to strap TNT to their chests and walk up to Allied tanks to blow themselves up near them.

Allied strategists forecast that an invasion of the main Japanese islands would cost up to – or even more than – 1 million killed, wounded, and missing on the Allied side. No one even knew how many Japanese soldiers and civilians would die in such an invasion, but knowing the fanaticism of the Japanese and their willingness to sustain heavy casualties, the Allies assumed such casualties would be numbered in the millions.

Had there been a conventional invasion of the main Japanese islands, there would’ve been a repeat of the bloody battle of Okinawa, but on a much greater scale: massive body counts on both the Allied and the Japanese side.

Both the American and the Japanese people should be eternally grateful to President Truman for saving millions of American and Japanese troops, as well as millions of Japanese civilians. His decision was absolutely the right one – based on what he knew in August 1945, when he made that decision, and based on what we know today.

Kellyanne Calls For A Big Name Resignation In Wake Of Mueller Report

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway called on Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California to resign Monday after the release of Robert Mueller’s Russia report.

“When you’re talking about collusion and talking to Russia, and conspiracies and obstruction of justice for two years with no proof other than people leaking to you or you just, you just guffawing with the anchor next to you and fake lawyers on TV and the journalists who are pretending to be lawyers for that moment. You’re calling us all … You’re saying that we did not win fairly and squarely,” Conway said on “Fox & Friends” Monday.

“You, in fact, running around jutting your jaw out and saying ‘I’m worried about the effect of institutions.’ You were disparaging the institutions. You were demeaning and deriding our great democracy — The presidency of the United States. Adam Schiff should resign,” she continued. “He has no right as somebody who has been pedaling a lie day after day after day. Unchallenged. Unchallenged and not under oath. Somebody should have put him under oath and said, ‘Do you have evidence? Where is it?’ Because Bob Mueller already ran the fair and the full investigation. And any partisan, politicized investigation from here on in will never have the credibility of the Mueller investigation.”

Attorney General William Barr delivered his report on the Mueller probe to Congress Sunday, and wrote that Trump and his campaign team did not collude with any Russian entities during the election. Barr also said there was no evidence to suggest Trump obstructed justice.

Conway said the media has gotten away with being overly biased and has yet to pay for their mistakes with Russia and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“There is not a single person in the media who got the 2016 elections so chronically and embarrassingly wrong [and] lost their jobs. And they probably won’t here, too. Look what they did to Brett Kavanaugh. The second most popular story in the Trump presidency was the Russian collusion fake hoax nonsense. The most covered stories I read last night in a condensed period of time was Brett Kavanaugh,” she said earlier in the interview.

“And they treated him the same way. That is microcosmic version of what they tried to do to President Trump and his campaign and his family for the last two years. It’s a drive-by. They abandoned all standards, all personal ethics, all professional duty. Do you realize major papers in this country won Pulitzer prizes over their reporting over something that is totally fake? Over 13,000 stories combined by two major print outlets and two major cable stations not named Fox News. And as somebody who engages with those people [as] much as I can, and tries to get out there, we were basically were being told we were liars.”

Basic Knowledge About Java

Although Java programming language was introduced back in 1995, it is still widely used all over world. This software is particularly popular thanks to its simplicity. Moreover, Java helps to power different applications.

That is the reason why every educated person working in an IT industry should know the basics of this programming language. If you have never worked with similar asset, it will be good to start from the basics. Read information from https://explainjava.com/java-interview-questions/ for general understanding what you need to know to get a Java developer job.

How to use Java applications for business purposes

Java enables a user to power multiple applications for business purposes. Today, at the time of electronic commerce boom, such IT products are particularly needed. There are two main types of hardware that you can power the applications with Java:

  • Computers. Web applications are particularly useful for businesses. They enable functioning of online auctions. They also are indispensable to use in online commerce. That is the reason why businesses employ professionals who power respective web applications with Java.

  • Mobile devices. The programming language enables professionals to create the mobile applications. Today, we can hardly manage our daily tasks without them. People actively use Google Play or App Store. The sales mechanism using mobile applications is extremely important for small and large businesses alike.

Not only mentioned IT products that can be developed with this programming language. However, they are the most popular ones. Thanks to such software as Java online commerce will develop even greater than ever. Until 2021, global retail sales are expected to grow up to 17,5%. That is quite an impressive number.\

What is a Development Kit?

Java Development Kit is a necessary kit for every person who works with this programming language. The kit contains the necessary tools to code successfully. You will have a different one for each of the Java platforms editions. There are several of them:

  • Standard edition;

  • Enterprise edition;

  • Micro editions.

Here are the basic elements that are included into the kit:

  • appletviewer. With the program, you can also power the applets. For this purpose you should use appletviewer;

  • extcheck. That is the tool that will help you to detect the file conflicts;

  • JConsole. It will be needed to monitor and manage Java Virtual Machine;

  • policytool. It will help you to indicate the permissions, that are available for codes from various sources.

The kit also contains other important elements. They will help you to power the IT product you wish successfully.

Learning to work with Java is not that hard, but you have to understand what mechanisms Java employs. For IT programmers coding with it will be easier, but virtually every person can learn to work with Java.

Rebuttal of Joe Cirincione’s newest lies about nukes and landmines

The leftist DefenseOne website has published a new treasonous, leftist, pro-unilateral-disarmament screed by unrepentant traitor Joe Cirincione, president of the Ploughshares Fund, an organization that campaigns for America’s unilateral disarmament. Therein, Cirincione hails Obama’s decision to unilaterally forego the production or development of landmines (a crucial step on the Left’s road to disarming the US unilaterally) and claims it is proof that the world can be rid of the supposed “scourge” of landmines, chemical weapons, and nukes.

He falsely claims that:

As the world’s preeminent military power and an international leader in human rights and democracy, public commitments by the United States influence militaries around the world. Even though the United States has far to go, this measured step strengthens the international norms against horrific weapons, like landmines, poison gas and nuclear weapons, which arbitrarily kill civilians. Children, families and nations will be safer without these weapons.”

All of his claims, as always, are blatant lies, plain and simple. Here’s why.

Firstly, contrary to Cirincione’s utterly false claims, America’s “commitments” and unilateral disarmament gestures influence and impress NO ONE around the world. If the US disarms itself unilaterally, or gives up on any part of its arsenal, nobody else will follow suit – because nobody else is suicidal enough. (Except Ukraine, which is now paying a deadly price for disarming itself unilaterally in 1994.)

No country that has evil designs and plans, and no terrorist group, is ever going to abide by any arms control treaties, nor be influenced by America’s unilateral disarmament gestures. On the contrary, they will only use such an opportunity to threaten or evne attack America and its allies.

Here’s proof: Barack Obama has cut America’s nuclear stockpile and ICBM fleet unilaterally, is disabling missile tubes on US Navy ballistic missile subs, is delaying all crucial nuclear modernization programs, and has unilaterally scrapped the nuclear-capable version of the Tomahawk cruise missile. Not one other nation has reciprocated – all other nuclear powers are modernizing, and in most cases also growing, their nuclear arsenals.

I repeat: unilateral disarmament gestures by the US impress and influence NOBODY in the world.

Evil countries, regimes, and terrorist groups do not abide by arms control treaties – they routinely VIOLATE them, thus gaining an advantage over those foolish nations, like the US, which slavishly and suicidally adhere to such treaties.

Secondly, American landmines and nuclear weapons are important tools in America’s military arsenal. Nukes are, in fact, America’s only defense and life insurance against the deadliest threats in this world – hostile nations armed with nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons or with ballistic missiles. Threats that, absent America’s nuclear deterrent, would literally destroy the entire US within an hour.

As for landmines, they are a crucial part of the .Army’s arsenal. As House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon has stated:

Irresponsible land mine use by other countries has come at a high humanitarian price, but America isn’t part of that problem.  Indeed, we do more than any other country to clean up these irresponsible weapons.  General Dempsey has long declared the responsible land mines we use are an ‘important tool in the arsenal of the Armed Forces of the United States.’”

Which brings me to my next point: disarming America unilaterally, whether completely or by “just” scrapping its nukes and landmines, will do absolutely nothing to rid the world of these weapons. This is for two reasons. Firstly, as stated above, rogue, outlaw nations, regimes, and terrorist organizations do not abide by  any “arms control treaties” or “international norms.” They violate them routinely and shamelessly. Adhering to treaties that America’s adversaries do not comply with is suicidal and will only invite aggression against the US.

Secondly, these weapons – particularly nuclear arms – are so attractive to countries around the world that no nuclear power (other than Ukraine and Belarus after the USSR’s collapse) has ever renounced its atomic arsenal – and in the last few decades, several new countries have joined the nuclear club, with more countries working – and racing – to acquire such weapons.

In 1968, when the utterly failed and useless “Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty” was signed, only five countries had nuclear weapons, the original five nuclear powers: the US, the USSR, Britain, France and China. Within the next 6 years, Israel and India joined the nuclear club. The end of the Cold War hardly marked the end of the nuclear club’s expansion: Pakistan joined the club in 1998, North Korea in 2006, and now, Iran and Saudi Arabia are racing to join the nuclear club, too. Both of them will likely obtain nuclear weapons within the next few years.

This is not surprising, given that Iran and Saudi Arabia are fierce rivals, indeed enemies, vying for supremacy in the Muslim world. If one of them obtains nuclear weapons, the other one cannot afford not to have them – especially since Saudi Arabia no longer trusts Washington’s nuclear deterrence guarantees while watching the Obama administration disarm itself unilaterally.

Meanwhile, existing club members Russia, China, North Korea, India, Pakistan, and Israel are all growing and modernizing their nuclear arsenals. In fact, State Department officials say Russia is rapidly growing its arsenal to achieve nuclear superiority over, rather than just retain parity with, the US.

This is confirmed by Russia’s incessant nuclear saber-rattling ongoing since 2007 and repeated nuclear threats against the US and its allies, as well as its violations of every arms control treaty it has signed (including the INF and New START treaties). (Remember what I just said above about arms control treaties being useless?)

China (which has at least 1,600, and possibly up to 3,000, nuclear weapons) is also rapidly building up its arsenal of both warheads and delivery systems. It has recently begun deploying the DF-41 mobile ICBM capable of carrying 10 warheads to the CONUS. Which means just one Chinese DF-41 missile, with 10 warheads, can destroy 10 different targets throughout the CONUS (the missile’s range is 12,000 kms). As the WantChinaTimes newspaper remarks, this means China could destroy Washington, New York, and Los Angeles with just one DF-41 missile – and that missile is just one of the many nuclear delivery systems China possesses.

Besides Russia and China, every other nuclear power in the world – except Barack Obama’s America – is modernizing its nuclear arsenal, and many nuclear powers are expanding them. India, for example, has just commissioned its first-ever ballistic missile submarine, marking the birth of its nuclear triad. Israel has tested and is now deploying the Jericho-III ICBM with a range of over 10,000 kms. North Korea deployed a new, road-mobile ICBM (supplied by China) called the KN-08 two years ago. France is investing in new delivery systems that will prolong its nuclear arsenal’s lifetime into the 2060s.

Meanwhile, America’s allies around the world – from Poland to Persian Gulf states to South Korea to Japan – are very worried about their security, as they watch the Obama administration disarm the US unilaterally and thus deprive them of the US nuclear umbrella. They know they cannot afford to bet their security, and indeed their very survival, on Obama’s and Cirincione’s fantasies of “a world without nuclear weapons” – especially when the world is moving in exactly the opposite direction.

Many of them, especially, South Korea and Japan, will eventually build their own atomic arsenals if Obama continues to cut America’s arsenal unilaterally. Already, 66% of South Koreans want their country to do so, and Japan has recently built a facility permitting it to produce enough fissile material for 3,600 nuclear warheads in a matter of months, if need be.

The world is not only not an inch closer to being “free of nuclear weapons”, it is moving in exactly the OPPOSITE direction: towards MORE nuclear weapons (just not in the US) and more nuclear-armed states. More and more countries are aspiring to join the nuclear club.

Nor are chemical weapons falling out of fashion. Syria has an undeclared stock of chemical weapons, while Israel and North Korea have huge chemical arsenals of their own. In 2003, North Korea was estimated to have 2,500 metric tons of chemical weapons – all kinds of poison gases known to mankind – and the means to deliver them.

So the legacy of Barack Obama – and other advocates of disarming America unilaterally – will be a world with MORE nuclear weapons and MORE nuclear-armed states in it. Instead of achieving their supposed goal of ridding the world of nuclear and chemical weapons, their unilateral disarmament of America is only bringing about a world with MORE nuclear weapons and MORE nuclear-armed states in it.

The world is even more distant from their supposed goal of “a nuclear-free world” than it was 25 years ago.

As for Cirincione’s claim that “children, families and nations will be safer without these weapons”, that is also a blatant lie, just like everything else he writes.

American nuclear weapons do not threaten the US nor its children and families – they protect them. America’s nuclear weapons are a proven security guarantee and umbrella to the population of the US as well as over 30 allied countries.

It is Russian, Chinese, and North Korean chemical and nuclear weapons that threaten the US and its allies – but they won’t be eliminated by disarming the US. Quite the contrary.

As even Jimmy Carter’s Defense Secretary, Harold Brown, has observed, “When we build, they build. When we cut, they build.”
