Augsburg 29, UW-Stevens Point 13

MINNEAPOLIS — Scoring victories in seven of the 10 bouts, the No. 7-ranked Augsburg College wrestling team claimed a 29-13 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday night at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg honored its three seniors in their final home dual of the season. Ryan Cook (SR, Wetumpka, Ala./Wetumpka HS), Justin Bowland (SR, Foley, Minn.) and Chad Johnson (SR, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS) were all recognized for their Auggie careers.

Action began at 125 pounds, where Augsburg’s No. 4-ranked Mike Fuenffinger (JR, Hibbing, Minn.) improved to 27-3 with a 17-2, technical-fall win over Ryan Osse. Fuenffinger is now 70-20 in his Augsburg career and has won 16 of his last 18 matches.

Augsburg’s Chad Bartschenfeld (JR, Amery, Wis.) scored a 7-1 victory for the Auggies at 133 pounds, but the Pointers were able to get on the board with a major decision at 141, which brought the team score to 8-4 in favor of Augsburg.

Will Keeter (JR, Twin Falls, Idaho) was able to score the only pin of the night for the Auggies at 149 pounds, when he posted a 5:46 fall over John Roycraft. With the win, Keeter moved to 25-14 on the season and 94-43 in his career. He is 11-4 since moving to 149 pounds from 157, with a 8-1 mark in his last nine bouts.

UW-Stevens Point countered with a pin of its own at 157 pounds, but Augsburg was able to claim decisions at 165 and 174 to go up 20-10 in the dual. Bowland was able to record a 4-0 decision at 165 to improve to 21-13 on the year, while Tyrell Martin (JR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) claimed a 6-2 win at 174.

The Auggies were able to claim victories in two of the last three bouts, with No. 5-ranked Matt Hechsel (JR, Apple Valley, Minn.) posting a hard-fought 5-2 decision over the Pointers’ Dustin Wozniak at 197, and top-ranked and two-time defending national champion heavyweight Chad Johnson (SR, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS) receiving a forfeit. A three-time All-American, Johnson is now 100-3 since the beginning of his sophomore year, and has not lost to a DIvision III opponent since his initial season.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (3/1) when the Auggies host the NCAA Division III West Regional at Si Melby Hall.
