Arsenal omit Ozil and two other big names from Europa squad

Arsenal have left out Mesut Ozil, William Saliba and Sokratis from their squad for the Europa League group stage.

Ozil has not played for the Gunners since March and his future at the club has been in doubt for some time.

The German is the highest paid player in Arsenal’s history and the fact he has been ostracised has been something of a mystery.

He played in every Premier League game under Mikel Arteta until the season was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic – and has not featured since.

Saliba, who was widely expected to become a member of Arteta’s first-team squad this season, has also been omitted after failing to make his competitive debut for the club, with summer signing Gabriel Magalhaes leapfrogging him in the pecking order.

And Sokratis – who has also been overlooked for the Europa squad – looks set to struggle for game time again this term after Arteta preferred the centre-back pairing of David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi for most of last season.
