SHELBY COUNTY, IN — The Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter wants the public’s help as staff members try to figure out what happened to an injured dog found walking on the road by a good Samaritan over the weekend. In a Facebook post Saturday, Nov. 3, the shelter said it received a call from a good Samaritan Friday, Nov. 2 who told them the male dog was wandering the road “in the vicinity of 900 North and 400 West in Shelby County Indiana.” According to the shelter, the Pit Bull/ Terrier mix was picked up by Animal Control after the phone call on Friday.
The shelter is looking for answers on what exactly was done to the dog.
“He is not microchipped and his collar hangs as if he once fit into it,” The shelter’s Facebook post states. “Unfortunately, there were no tags identifying his owner.”
“The vet believes he is between two and three years old,” the shelter added. “The damage appears to be from burns, but at this time unsure if it is chemical or from fire.”
Patch reached out to Chris Browder with the Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter Monday regarding Justice’s recovery. Browder told Patch he had just spoken to Justice’s “devoted veterinarian” at IndyVet. According to Browder, Justice is resting quietly while in the best hands. Browder also told Patch the veterinarian said the dog was able to eat a little.
“They were able to check his mouth and he has lacerations on his tongue, possibly from licking off the chemical,” Browder said. “They are changing his bandages today. He is also been given meds (medicines) to protect his stomach in case of chemicals being ingested.”
The shelter continues posting updates about Justice’s recovery on Facebook, as the dog is also battling an infection from what shelter workers called “horrific” wounds. Justice has, however, wagged his tail a couple of times, which the shelter said was “a wonderful moment,” though he has a long way to go with his recovery.
The shelter is asking for any tips – big or small – regarding what was done to the poor dog, especially information leading to the person(s) responsible and charges.
Anonymous tips can be made by emailing [email protected] or by calling the shelter at 317-392-5127.
While the shelter said everything Justice needs financially to help his recovery will be provided, there have been many questions regarding donations. To donate, the shelter said you can stop by on weekdays between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., excluding Election Day on Nov. 6, or mail a check to: Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter, 705 Hale Road, Shelbyville, IN 46176, and to please write Justice4Justice in the check’s memo spot.
