Almost half of the Premier League clubs ‘have had serious discussions’ about finding a conclusion to the season by June 30, with all 20 sides due to explore the matter further in a meeting on Friday.

It is believed that there is a growing concern among clubs that loan players or those with expiring contracts will no longer be available if the campaign is played into July or even August, as has been mooted as a possibility.

Sky Sports quote one unnamed club owner as stating that “some clubs want the season to finish by the end of June,” explaining: “How can it be fair for European places and relegation to be decided by depleted squads?”

FIFA suggested earlier this month that deals expiring this summer should be extended until the season ends but many sides remain sceptical as to how that could be enforced with regards to English contractual law.

The prospect of declaring the season null and void remains unlikely and clubs will continue to consider every possibility that enables final standings to be decided fairly.

No absolute decisions will be made at Friday’s meeting but the Daily Mirror claim ‘at least nine clubs have had serious discussions among themselves’ about finishing the season by June 30, and ‘will come together to present their case at the next league summit’.

There is a desperation in some quarters to avoid the “huge uncertainty and utter chaos” that playing the season beyond the end of June could create.

For any proposal to settle the season by June 30 to be set in stone, it would require a 14-team majority vote of approval. With ‘at least nine’ clubs having already spoken about it, that does not seem outside the realms of possibility.
