Mourinho compares Tottenham start to first months at Porto

Jose Mourinho sees similarities when comparing his start at Tottenham to the first few months he enjoyed at Porto.

Tottenham are fourth in a Premier League table both since Mourinho’s appointment and Project Restart. Not that he’s keeping track or anything.

The club was languishing in the bottom half under Mauricio Pochettino but Mourinho has them within a point of potential Europa League qualification with two games remaining.

While his success with Manchester United in 2017 has been somewhat forgotten, winning the UEFA Cup with Porto in 2003 helped lay foundations that won them the Champions League a year later, and gave Mourinho a springboard to Premier League stardom.

He was appointed by Chelsea soon after and his managerial career skyrocketed from there, but Mourinho feels he is in a similar situation in north London.

The Portuguese took over at Porto in January 2002 and took them to third in the Primeira Liga, before winning the title in both of the subsequent two years.

Mourinho claims he inherited a club where “everything was broken with an incredible sequence of injuries” in November, but is seeing enough progress and reasons to be positive.

“We, myself and the staff, analyse internally and we know we are doing a very positive job,” he told Sky Sports.

“I can compare it a little bit with my experience at Porto. When I got to Porto in January, that half of the season was really hard, but was so important for the preparation of the next one.

“So that’s what I’m doing now, accumulating knowledge and experience in the club to prepare for what’s next.”
