Donald Trump lost. Of that there is no doubt. But the size of gap between the US president’s predictions during the shutdown and what he announced on Friday is so vast that it bears spelling out in full.
By my count there are at least six declarations that Mr Trump made which ended up being plain wrong. Each reveals the hollowness of his self-confidence during the battle and the extent to which he misread the political realities in Washington DC.
