Dragons Record Six Top 5 Finishes at Bison Open

FARGO, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team picked up six top-five finishes during action at the Bison Open hosted by North Dakota State on Saturday at the Scheels Center in Fargo, N.D.

Freshman Evan Foster, also competing unattached at 197, was third. He pinned Devante Ryans of Northland CTC in 3:33 to open the day and then beat Minot State’s Andrew Helfrich by major decision, 8-0 to make the semis. He fell to Cordell Eaton of NDSU, 17-5 in that match. Foster came back with an 11-1 win over Jesse Sherman and then edged August Peplinski of NDSU 7-6 to take third.

Sophomore Weston Dobler was fourth at 165. He lost to Devon Sievers of SDSU, 3-2 to open the day before pinning freshman teammate Remington Meagher in 42 seconds in the consolation round. Dobler then pinned Garrett Jordan of SDSU in 1:45 and followed with a 3-2 win over Kelby Hawkins of SDSU to reach the third-place match. He lost to Brett Bye of SDSU 6-0 in that contest.

Junior Adam Blees was fourth at 174. He lost 8-7 to NDSU’s Michael Otomo but came back to beat Joshua Juarez of Minot State, 18-2 in the consolation bracket. Blees topped Colton Clingenpeel of NDSU 9-7 before losing to Jesse Shearer of NDSU 5-2 in the third-place match.

Freshman Mason Schulz, competing unattached, finished fourth at 141. He opened with a win over Minot State’s Marco Ramirezlazos by a technical fall and then beat John Fitzgerald of South Dakota State 8-1 in the quarters. He fell to Henry Pohlmeyer of SDSU in the semifinals and then beat Nicolas Colunga of NDSU, 13-8 in the consolation bracket. Schulz lost by technical fall to Brent Jones of Minnesota in the third-place match.

Junior Jared Goldsmith was fifth at 125 pounds. He opened with a bye before losing to Justin Portillo of South Dakota State in the semis. Goldsmith defeated teammate Cole Jones 6-3 in the fifth-place match. Jones finished sixth on the day.

Redshirt freshman Aaron Sistrunk placed fifth at 133. He beat Rees Lehman of Northland CTC 18-0 in the quarterfinals before losing to Rylee Molitor 7-1 in the semis. Sistrunk major decisioned Tyler Pieper of SDSU 12-0 before being pinned by Sawyer Degen of NDSU. Sistrunk beat Ryan Ford of Northland CTC 17-0 for fifth.

MSUM hosts crosstown rival Concordia College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a nonconference dual.
