MITCHELL, S.D. – The Augustana wrestling team traveled to Mitchell, S.D. on Saturday for the Dakota Wesleyan Open and in their second competition of the season, 10 of the 22 Viking student-athletes placed.
The Vikings had one champion in Daniel Bishop (184lbs), two second-place finishers (Hunter Burnett 141lbs (unattached) and Steven Hajas 285lbs (unattached)), three fourth place finishers (Colin Ayers 157lbs, Kolby Kost 174lbs (unattached), and Bailey Neises 165lbs), two fifth-place finishers (Brandon Carroll 133lbs (unattached) , and Luke Nohns 285lbs), and two sixth-place finishers (Brayden Curry 133lbs (unattached) and Noah North 149lbs).
“I think our guys competed very hard for the most part,” Assistant Coach Chism Fink said. “There are plenty of areas and opportunities for improvement, but I liked the effort I saw from most of them today. We are on the right track right now.”
Leading the way for the Vikings was Redshirt Freshman Daniel Bishop who went 4-0 on the day to take first at 184 pounds. Bishop picked up a tech fall and a major decision en route to the first place match where he defeated Dylan Huntoon of Buena Vista by tech fall (16-0).
Freshmen Hunter Burnett (unattached) and Steven Hajas (unattached) both went 4-1 to claim second in their respective weight classes. Burnett, who competed at 141 pounds, used a major decision in the semifinal over St. Cloud’s Travis Swanson to make it to the finals before falling to Northern State’s Colton Roth. Hajas picked up two falls and major decision on his way to the finals, where he would fall to St. Cloud State’s Zachary Muller.
Redshirt Senior Colin Ayers went 5-2 on the day, finishing fourth on Saturday including a hard-fought sudden victory win in the consolation semifinals to earn his way into the third-place match.
At 174 pounds, Kolby Kost (unattached) went 3-2, which was good for a fourth-place finish. Kost picked up two tech falls and a major decision in his victories. Bailey Neises went 4-2 to finish fourth at 165 pounds. The redshirt junior won by major decision in the consolation semifinals before falling losing a 5-2 decision to Devin Donovan of St. Cloud State in the third-place match.
Junior Brandon Carroll (unattached) went 4-2 at 133 pounds defeating teammate Brayden Curry (unattached) in the fifth-place match in an 11-10 decision. Redshirt Senior Luke Nohns went 4-2 picking up two falls on the way to the fifth-place match where he won by rule over Concordia (Neb.) Michael Stann.
Brayden Curry (unattached) and Noah North both finished 3-3 to take sixth in their respective weight classes of 133 and 149 pounds.

The Vikings resume competition next Saturday when they travel to the Finn Grinaker Open in Moorhead, Minn. The all-day event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
