Officials from DCW learned about the women from a phone call received on its 181 Women Helpline. A team of counsellors reached Nizamuddin in south Delhi from where the call had been made. There, they found the two women waiting for help to arrive. They told the officials that a man in Nizamuddin had volunteered to help them and called the helpline.

The DCW team noticed burn marks on the necks and faces of the pair, and on enquiring found that the brothel owner had subjected them to severe abrasion with pumice stones and chemicals as well as the application of creams because they were dark complexioned and bad for the business.
