How Prince William and Kate Middleton Are Teaching Prince George About Princess Diana

“Granny Diana” has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

Princess Diana never got a chance assume the moniker while she was alive, but Prince William and Kate Middleton are making sure their kids know her as such. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are all learning about their late grandmother through their royal parents, and now we have intel on exactly what they’re saying.

“We’ve got more photos up round the house now of her and we talk about her a bit and stuff,” Prince William said in last summer’s HBO special Diana: Her Life and Legacy, adding that he and Kate are “constantly talking about Granny Diana.”

“It’s hard because obviously Catherine didn’t know her, so she cannot really provide that—that level of detail,” he said. “So, I do [when] regularly putting George or Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try and remind them that there are two grandmothers, there were two grandmothers in their lives, and so it’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”

Despite the fact that Diana never got to meet Middleton, George, Charlotte, or Louis, William said he has a pretty good idea of what kind of approach she’d take to grandparenthood.

“She’d be a nightmare grandmother, absolute nightmare,” he joked. “She’d love the children to bits, but she’d be an absolute nightmare. She’d come and go and she’d come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing amount of scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place and—and then leave.”

“I want to make as much time and effort with Charlotte and George as I can because I realize that these early years particularly are crucial for children, and having seen, you know, what she did for us,” he concluded.

Royal sources tell People that William is making good on that promise.

“[William] can do all the things that he thinks are important for family life and make sure that his children have that loving, caring, fun home that his mother was trying to create,” they said.

Even so, Diana’s presence is still felt deeply by the family, even though not everyone knew her personally.

“At all these landmark moments, [William’s] mother is missing, and it’s sad,” the source said. “But they are creating their own legacy now.”
