On average, nine women leave Ireland every day to have a termination in the UK.
This totalled 3,265 people travelling to the UK from Ireland for a legal but privately-funded abortion that they couldn’t have in their own country in 2016.
Since 1980, more than 170,000 women and girls have done the same, travelling to another country – usually Britain or sometimes the Netherlands – for an abortion.
On Friday, the Irish people will go to the polls in a referendum over whether to repeal some of the world’s toughest abortion laws and allow these women to have abortions at home.
