Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez has begun his coaching badges

Speaking in a press conference today ahead of his team’s Coupe de France clash with Lyon, Marseille boss André Villas-Boas revealed that 30-year-old Spanish central defender Alvaro Gonzalez, currently on loan at OM from Villarreal, has already begun his coaching badges.

“He has an ensemble of exceptional qualities, tactics, like the leader of an organisation. He has an understanding of the game, he has already begun his coaching badges, he is at Level B, he still needs to do A and then the pro level. He commands his defensive line, knows when to retreat, to put the opponent in an offside position, anticipate things, close down spaces. He plays for the totality of these details.”

Lyon offered €30m last month to sign Jonathan Ikoné from Lille

France Football report that Lyon had agreed to offer up to €30m to Ligue 1 Champions’ League chasing rivals Lille to sign French international attacker Jonathan Ikoné last month.

Head of Scouting at OL, Florian Maurice, sounded the player out in December, and with the ACL injuries to Memphis Depay and Jeff-Reine Adélaïde, it felt like the right time in Lyon’s eyes to go after the ex-PSG youth prospect.

LOSC quickly rebuffed Lyon’s advances, stating that they would be looking for €70m, the size of an offer they claim to have rejected already last summer for Ikoné, if they were to sell.

As a result, Les Gones quickly moved for Karl Toko Ekambi instead. PSG have a 40% sell-on percentage fee clause in the future sale of Ikoné, who is a player who will almost certainly attract bids in summer.

“Thiago Silva is in the process of proving it on the pitch: he is having really good matches. Even at the age of 35, he is continuing to play at a very high level. He is above all a good friend, a good person who is beside me in the dressing room, who helps me and who always pushes me forward. If I had to choose, of course I would want him to stay.”

Jean-Philippe Mateta on his idol: “Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the whole arrogant thing doesn’t interest me.”

Speaking in an interview with France Football, French international and Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta discussed who his idols were in football while growing up.

“Zlatan. As I am tall, I was looking for a tall striker who ran quickly, that showed technical skills, who can dribble. What did I like about him? His goalscoring side. All he did was score. After Ronaldo and Messi, he is the greatest goalscorer in history. There is no debate. What he has done, it is incredible. But, aside from that, everything outside of that, when he speaks to the press and does the whole arrogant thing, that, that doesn’t interest me.”
