Everton ‘clearly express interest’ in €30m-rated defender

Everton have “clearly expressed their interest” in Juventus’ €30m-rated defender Merih Demiral, according to reports.

Under new boss Rafael Benitez, the Toffees are expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer. They have already been linked with PSV’s Denzel Dumfries and Napoli’s £35m-rated Kalidou Koulibaly.

Demiral has been with Juventus since 2019. He made the move to them from their Serie A rivals Sassuolo for around €18m.

The centre-back has struggled to establish himself as a regular for the Italian giants since his move. He has only played 21 times for them in Serie A since 2019.

Italian journalist Nicolo Ceccarini (as cited by Sport Witness) has reported that Everton have “clearly expressed their interest” in the defender.

Demiral is said to be “still on the way out” of Juventus. The report adds that if they sell him this summer, it will not be for anything less than €30m.

Everton are reportedly willing to let go up to six players this summer, and this includes Yerry Mina.

Elsewhere, Richarlison has been linked with a move away from Everton this summer. The Brazillian is reportedly attracting interest from Real Madrid, who are now managed by Carlo Ancelotti.

Noel Whelan has suggested that Newcastle United’s “explosive” Allan Saint-Maximin would be an ideal replacement for Richarlison:

“Saint-Maximin is very direct. A player with that kind of explosive ability, like Adama Traore.

“Somebody that can open up gaps, skip past players, bring Calvert-Lewin, Rodriguez and other players into play.

“This is the sort of player that if they are going to lose a Richarlison you’ve got to replace them with.

“He’s somebody that is going to excite the Everton faithful. Bring that kind of life back, that edge-of-the-seat football player.

“He’s going to take their minds off the fact they’ve lost a Brazil number nine. However, he would be a player that you’ve got to look at injuries.

“You’ve got to see the fact that he went through a few niggles, a long spell out at Newcastle.

“He would be well worth a punt if you keep that player fit. He would definitely bring some excitement to Goodison Park.”

Leeds United ‘pull the plug’ on signing of Prem ‘keeper

According to reports, Leeds United have decided to “pull the plug” on the signing of Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

The 24-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for the Magpies. He joined them in 2013 from their Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

Instead, Woodman has spent the last few years on loan in Scotland and in the EFL. His latest loan spell has come with Swansea City.

The Englishman has spent the last two years with the Swans and he has played 92 times for them. Steve Cooper’s side lost in the Championship play-off final against Brentford at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Leeds want a new backup goalkeeper amid Kiko Casilla’s departure to Spanish side Elche. They reportedly have a three-man shortlist in place.

One ‘keeper they have been interested in is Woodman, who is rated at around £10m by Newcastle.

It was revealed earlier this week that Woodman has “rejected” Leeds and now they have “pulled the plug” on the deal according to Football Insider.

They name Levante’s Dani Cardenas and Valerenga’s Kristoffer Klaesson as alternatives to Woodman.

Elsewhere, Dimitar Berbatov has urged Manchester United to sign Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips after he “stood out” for England at Euro 2020:

“Kalvin Phillips stood out again too [in the 2-1 semi-final win over Denmark]. He’s been one of the players of the tournament and, sooner or later, I expect him to leave Leeds for a bigger club.

“Offers will come in for him after the tournament. He is playing with maturity, agility, knowing when to run with the ball and when to pass.

“I would like to see him sign for Manchester United.”

Berbatov went onto say that he is “pleased” that his former club have “finally” signed Sancho:

“Some fans are disappointed that Sancho hasn’t played more for England at Euro 2020. But I am just pleased that Manchester United have signed him, finally.

“Does Sancho’s arrival make them serious Premier League title contenders?

“I can’t wait to see him playing in a red shirt. But let’s wait and see what it means for United’s title chances.

“What does this signing mean for Anthony Martial? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to be clever in rotating his attacking players.”

Arteta pinpoints Arsenal problem despite friendly improvement

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was pleased with Nuno Tavares’s scoring start in the 2-2 friendly draw with Rangers at Ibrox.

The 21-year-old Portuguese left-back, signed from Benfica last weekend, levelled in the 23rd minute with a drive from close range after Gers defender Leon Balogun had opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a header from a James Tavernier corner.

The London club controlled the game for the most part and missed a series of chances but fell behind in the 75th minute when Gers striker Cedric Itten headed in a corner from fellow substitute Glenn Middleton – but that was cancelled out in the 83rd minute by Arsenal replacement Eddie Nketiah.

Former Gers midfielder Arteta, given a good reception by the 2,000 home fans allowed inside the stadium, said of Tavares on Arsenal’s official website: “Great debut, (scoring) with his right foot as well.”

Not his debut, Mikel. But carry on.

“He has only been with us a few days but you can already see his qualities, his physicality and the quality he has on the ball as well.

“He is integrating with the lads really well, so it is a good start.”

Tavares, who was replaced at half-time, said: “I feel very happy with my first goal for Arsenal. I was so excited for this and today I did it.

“I felt good. It was a good game for me and for us. A good test. I think we had a good match and we learned a lot.”

On the overall performance, following a 2-1 defeat at Hibernian, Arsenal manager Arteta said: “I’m really pleased with the performance.

“I think we dominated the game, we created so many chances – I counted about eight or 10 clear chances to score – but this game is decided in both boxes.

“We created so many chances but we are not converting enough.

“Today we should’ve scored many more goals and with the quality of the players we have up front, they have to demand much more of themselves.

“But at least we are getting there, the process is becoming much clearer, much better.

“Without the ball as well, we worked really hard and were really efficient.

“We won a lot of balls in the final third so there are a lot of positives to take.

“It’s much better from the other day and physically we were already better in the second game.

“The organisation was better, individually they played better, but I really liked the collective understanding of the game and how we executed a lot of things we’ve been working on in the training pitch.”

Van Dijk slams journalist for ‘completely false’ story

Virgil van Dijk has blasted the Daily Mirror for publishing what the Liverpool defender claims to be an incorrect article.

On Saturday evening, a story by Simon Mullock of the Reach publication was released, in which it was claimed that Van Dijk and some of his Netherlands teammates were ‘furious’ at the prospect of Louis van Gaal returning as manager.

The article claimed that Van Gaal had been ‘tempted out of retirement’ to take over the Oranje in the aftermath of Euro 2020, with Frank de Boer having resigned from the post after a disappointing showing at the tournament.

The proposed appointment of former Manchester United coach Van Gaal was said to have ‘torn the squad he will inherit apart’ as the country’s federation ‘ignored pleas’ from players not to bring him in.

Van Dijk and former Liverpool teammate Georginio Wijnaldum were named as ‘rebel players’ who preferred for Henk ten Cate to take over.

But the former Chelsea assistant reportedly pulled out of the race after hearing the KNVB wanted to draft Van Gaal in for his third reign as Netherlands manager.

The article, published at 9pm, was rubbished less than an hour and a half later by Van Dijk himself.

‘This story is completely false,’ he posted on his official Twitter account. ‘It’s never been more important for journalists to tell the truth and not just make stuff up. Shame on you Mr.’

It remains to be seen whether Van Gaal is made manager of the Dutch again, having seemingly retired in early 2019.

“I thought maybe I would stop, then I thought it would be a sabbatical, but now I do not think I will return to coaching,” he said as far back as 2017.

The 69-year-old was last involved with football in 2016, winning the FA Cup in his final game of a remarkable 25-year coaching career. It was announced this summer that he would return to manage one game with SC Telstar, a second-tier side in his native country, next season as part of a charity event.
