Carragher warns Kane of ‘new reality’ for England

Jamie Carragher thinks Harry Kane must face the “new reality” that he could be substituted in every match for England and has little chance of winning the Golden Boot at Euro 2020.

Three years on from the heartbreaking World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia, the Three Lions exacted some sort of revenge by giving Zlatko Dalic’s men a bloody nose at the start of Euro 2020.

Raheem Sterling’s first tournament goal – and England’s first at Wembley in front of fans since November 2019 – was enough to secure a 1-0 win in sweltering conditions.

England 1-0 Croatia: Rating the players

Kane had a disappointing day for Gareth Southgate’s side with his only real sight on goal seeing him clatter into the post. The stretcher was brought out as the striker was treated, but he got back up to a hearty cheer.

However, he was subbed with eight minutes to go as Jude Bellingham replaced him and in doing so became the youngest player to ever feature in the competition.

And Carragher thinks “Kane is playing like he wants to be Teddy Sheringham more than Alan Shearer” and has little chance of winning the Golden Boot.

Carragher wrote in his column for the Daily Telegraph: “Two thoughts occurred to me as Gareth Southgate prepared to bring on Jude Bellingham in the 82nd minute of England’s encouraging open win.

“The first was that he had to take off Harry Kane. The second was that it should have happened 10 minutes earlier.

“Kane barely featured in the victory and looked exhausted. Brave as it seems for an England manager to substitute his captain, it was the right and obvious call.

“This may become the new reality for Kane. England can get the most from him with a premeditated plan, demanding he give everything for 65-70 minutes before being replaced by fresh legs.

“The days of keeping him on the pitch so he can make the most of every minute in pursuit of the Golden Boot are over.

“Whatever approach Gareth Southgate takes – and whatever happens for the rest of the tournament – we must adjust to the fact that this is not the same Kane who went to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and fulfilled his ambition to be the leading goalscorer.

“More importantly, the England captain must accept that, too.

“For him, this competition cannot be about going into a shoot-out with the likes of Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku or Italy’s Ciro Immobile.

“They play as dynamic No 9s. Kane no longer does. He spent most of his time against Croatia dropping deep and trying to link the play in midfield, which is why he spent so little time in the penalty area.

“If you want the Euro ’96 memories to keep coming, Kane is playing like he wants to be Teddy Sheringham more than Alan Shearer.

“That fundamental change in his game over the past two years is due to necessity, not design.

“Kane does not lead the press, chase down the full-backs and try to play off the shoulder of the last defender any more.

“He has become a different player because he no longer has the energy and pace he possessed when he was 24 under Mauricio Pochettino.”

‘House hunting’ begins as England star ‘expects’ Man Utd transfer

Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier has told his England team-mates that he thinks he will join Man Utd this summer, according to reports.

Trippier left Premier League side Tottenham in July 2019 to join Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid and was rewarded for his move this season as the Spaniards won the La Liga title, thanks to Luis Suarez’s winning goal on the final day.

In making a certain number of appearances, he also guaranteed a one-year contract extension, which ties him to the club until 2023.

16 Conclusions: England 1-0 Croatia

Trippier has been heavily linked with a return to England with Man Utd, who reportedly made a cheeky £10m bid despite Atletico valuing their right-back at closer to £35m.

Another report earlier in the week claimed Trippier divulged his interest in joining the Red Devils to some of his England teammates.

Not only has he talked to his England colleagues about a possible move, Football Insider now reckon he has told team-mates he ‘expects to sign’ for Man Utd this summer.

He is considered a ‘top target’ for the Red Devils as they look to provide Aaron Wan-Bissaka with some competition at right-back.

A source told Football Insider that ‘Trippier has let it be known to friends, including those in the England squad, that he is keen to return to the Premier League and is likely to end up at Old Trafford.’

It is understood that Trippier is so confident of a move to Man Utd that he has begun ‘house hunting’ in North West England.

Atletico Madrid will hold out for at least £30m for their right-back with the Premier League club ‘expected to return with an improved bid’ after the Spaniards rejected their £10m offer.

Trippier put in a great display as England beat Croatia 1-0 in the first match of the European Championship at Wembley but Man Utd are still ‘unlikely to pay’ the asking price with the defender turning 31 soon.

Gareth Southgate surprised a few by playing Trippier at left-back on Sunday but he reckons the Atletico right-back is “underrated”.

The England boss said: “He is a very underrated player. People are still looking at the player from a few years ago and not at the one who is at Atletico Madrid and playing like a warrior in the last few seasons.

“He is a big part of what we’ve done over the last few years and he gave a really good performance.”

Pundit: Liverpool should replace Wijnaldum with PL midfielder

Gabriel Agbonlahor has urged Liverpool to make a move for Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side are likely to be in the market for a new central midfielder ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

This comes after Georginio Wijnaldum left the club at the end of the season. The Dutchman has since joined PSG on a free transfer.

Henderson stuck at start of Liverpool saga for England

Liverpool have been linked with a number of midfielders and Tielemans is one of them. Dutch outlet Het Nieuwsblad reported last month that the 24-year-old was attracting the interest of the Reds.

Tielemans has shone for Leicester since he joined them in 2019. He has played over 100 times for them since then and he scored the winning goal in this season’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Agbonlahor has told Football Insider that Tielemans is a “great player” and Leicester will fight hard to keep him:

“[Tielemans] is definitely good enough. He’s a great player and Liverpool definitely need to replace Wijnaldum. I thought they needed another midfielder even if Wijnaldum had stayed.

“It’s definitely something Liverpool need to get over the line.

“I just don’t see Leicester letting him go though, even if the player wanted to go. I don’t see Leicester letting any of their better players go.”

Elsewhere, Simon Jordan has suggested that former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is not an “elite” manager:

“I can see Rafa Benitez pitching up wherever an opportunity benefits Rafa Benitez.

“It’s a great club, obviously there’s some history managing their great rival Everton have in Liverpool.

“There’s comments he’s made about Liverpool. After he departed to China for the integrity of one of the best leagues in the world and a big bag of money, I can absolutely understand him coming back and seeing an opportunity at Everton.

“He’s a good manager. He’s a very, very good manager – there’s no doubt about it. I just don’t like the way he operates.

“Ultimately, he’s had some very interesting results in his time at Liverpool and done some great things.

“But his career now is on a different trajectory. Elite doesn’t mean historically elite. It means you are at the top of your game at the moment you’ve been employed.”

Chelsea ‘favourites’ to sign £100m star over Man City

Chelsea are reportedly favourites to sign Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish this summer.

The midfielder has been one of the standout players in the Premier League this season and has been tipped to move away from Villa Park, with Manchester City the team most consistently linked.

But Chelsea have now moved ahead of other suitors, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The report claims the Blues – who are set to spend big again this summer after Champions League glory – are now ‘favourites’ to land the Villa skipper.

Grealish scored seven goals and claimed ten assists for his boyhood club this season, despite missing a big chunk of it through injury.

His form has seen him included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, though reports suggest he may start the tournament from the bench.

The 25-year-old is under contract at Villa until 2025 having signed a new deal back in September, meaning Dean Smith is under no pressure to sell him this summer.

And the Villans have reportedly slapped a £100million price tag on the England man’s shoulders to ward off the teams circling.

But former Villa defender Alan Hutton claims his former club will struggle to keep hold of their captain if he performs well at Euro 2020.

“I genuinely hate talking about it but it’s part of it. He’s a fantastic player. For me he would start (for England), it’s a no brainer.”

“Obviously, opinions differ but he’d be in my starting XI. He just makes things happen. People talk about the amount of times he gets fouled around the box but that’s not just him.

“He offers everything, he can play in midfield, wide left, number 10. He’s a creator and he can score goals. If he goes away, starts and he has a good tournament, it’s going to be difficult to hold on to him.

“We know the likes of Man City are circling about him, talking £100million. That kind of money, it would be hard to try and hold onto him. He’s definitely been the main man for Villa, their talisman. He kept them up the other season.

“I think they would have done even better last season had he not been injured. It’s one of those things, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

“I hope he does stay because the way the squad’s looking at the moment and the additions that are possibly coming in, they can be a real force next season.”

Morris explains how his tough love shaped Mount

Former Chelsea coach Jody Morris has revealed he used to purposefully pile pressure on Mason Mount in order to strengthen his resolve.

Morris, 42, made 124 appearances as a player for Chelsea, before returning to the club in 2014 as a youth-team coach. It was then that he first crossed paths with Mount, who was coming through the ranks at Chelsea.

When Derby County hired Frank Lampard in 2018, Morris was brought in as an assistant coach, and one of their first signings that summer was the precocious midfielder. Mount would go on to impress for Derby as they reached the play-off final.

However, the 22-year-old only truly began to take his game to stellar heights upon his return to Chelsea, again under the tutelage of Lampard and Morris, who were reunited with him at Stamford Bridge in 2019.

FEATURE: The transfer record progression of every Premier League club

After attracting criticism for his early performances in a Chelsea shirt, Mount has since become a talismanic figure for the Blues, inspiring them to Champions League glory last month.

Morris departed Chelsea in January following Lampard’s sacking, but was as delighted as anybody to see him lift club football’s ultimate prize, having had faith in him from the very beginning.

He told FourFourTwo: “He was so good. I was the first one to make him captain – it was in my first year in the Youth Cup and it was definitely done with the thinking that he wasn’t a natural choice for captain – he wasn’t a shouter – but I definitely wanted to put a bit of pressure on him.

“I remember the first training session that I had with him, sitting down with him and digging him out and having a bit of a go at him in front of everyone. It was almost setting a tone that if I’m going to pick on the best player and dig him out, make sure you all pull your socks up.

“I expected more from him, talking to players and being a leader as well. He had to start adding that to his game.

“I remember pulling him over after the final of the Youth Cup – he was outstanding, I’d played him in a deeper role – and I said to him, ‘That’s exactly why I had a go at you after the first training session when I’d made you captain, you can make other players better on the pitch’. As the tournament went on, he got better and better at that.”

Grealish on bench, Trippier left-back for England

Jack Grealish is set to start on the bench for England against Croatia, while Gareth Southgate is reportedly considering starting Kieran Trippier at left-back.

Grealish performed admirably for England in their warm-up games but is not expected to be in the starting XI on Sunday, with Southgate set to opt for Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden alongside Harry Kane, according to The Athletic.

The report also claims Southgate is considering handing a shock start to Trippier on the left of the England defence, with Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell both set to miss out.

Kalvin Phillips is tipped to start in a midfield three alongside Declan Rice, with Mason Mount slightly advanced of them.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has selected his XI to start against and beat Croatia, including a surprise call for Dean Henderson to start in goal.

Mourinho said: “I’d have Dean Henderson in goal. Not because I don’t like Jordan Pickford, but because I was so impressed with Henderson when he was a kid at Manchester United.

“He trained with me and was with me in the squad that won the League Cup final.

“When he asked me to go on loan to Shrewsbury he told me, ‘The next time you see me I’ll come back as No 1’.

“We were all looking at each other thinking, ‘This kid is crazy, he hasn’t played one game for us and thinks he can go to Shrewsbury and come back as the No 1’.

“But it just shows his  positive attitude.

“United did an amazing job too with his development through loans — Shrewsbury, then Sheffield United in the Championship, then letting him stay there for the Premier League. I think he’s a very good goalkeeper.

“Finally, I predict a win for  Gareth Southgate’s team, though not  an easy win, to break all this negativity about England having never won their first game at the Euros.”

Modric weighs up England’s chances of winning Euro 2020

Former Tottenham man Luka Modric has branded England as one of the favourites to win Euro 2020, with his Croatia side facing England on Sunday.

Modric was part of the Croatia side that knocked the Three Lions out of the 2018 World Cup as they ran out 2-1 winners in extra-time.

Croatia and England are joined in Group D with Scotland and Czech Republic.

F365 Says: BREAKING NEWS: Italy play good football

The Real Madrid playmaker has described Gareth Southgate‘s side as “very dangerous” and claims that the Three Lions could go all the way this summer.

“For me, they are better than they were three years ago, for sure, no doubt.

“Main threats? To say one player is difficult because they have so many great players, talented players, young players that are hungry for success.

“They will be very dangerous at this Euros and for me they are one of the favourites.

“Especially that they are playing at home which is also a good part for them. [it’s an] advantage, not a huge one but it is because there will not be away fans and that’s why I think they are certainly one of the favourites.”

The England starting eleven against the Croats is still up for debate, with Raheem Sterling emerging as a favourite to start.

Former defender Rio Ferdinand has told Metro how he would line up if he was in charge.

“Jordan Pickford [in goal]. On the right-hand side of the back three I’d play Kyle Walker, on the left I’d play Luke Shaw, central, I’d play John Stones,’ he said.

“Right wing-back: Reece James, midfield: Mason Mount and Declan Rice, left side: Ben Chilwell.

“And then I’d play two number tens inside, I’m not playing them wide, two narrow number tens: Grealish and Foden, stroke Sterling, maybe one of those, I’m undecided, and then I’d play Kane up top.”

Harry Maguire is back in training, which is a huge boost for Southgate, but the Manchester United man will not be fit for the Croatia encounter.

Maguire hasn’t played since he picked up the injury against Aston Villa on May 9th and has been absent from England’s training sessions since the start of their preparations for the Euros.

Moyes signs new West Ham contract to end Everton links

David Moyes has ended talk of an Everton return by signing a new deal with West Ham.

The Scotsman recently guided West Ham to sixth in the Premier League, securing Europa League qualification in the process.

The club were desperate to tie him down to fresh terms and have now announced a new three-year deal.

Granit counters: Five Xhaka successors Arsenal must consider

Speaking about the contract, Moyes told West Ham’s official website: “I am delighted to have committed my future to West Ham United.

“This is where I want to be and I’m happy. I’m excited to be given this opportunity to build on what we all have already achieved here. The owners and I are fully aligned with how we want to keep developing and improving the football club.

“The Board and everyone at the Club have been fantastic to work with, giving me great support and I feel that we are all united in what we want to achieve in the coming years and how we might be able to achieve those things.”

Moyes has turned his own fortunes around during his second spell with the Hammers. Previous jobs at Manchester United and Sunderland were unsuccessful, putting his future in the top flight under threat.

His signings in recent years have helped massively. Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal, both brought in from Slavia Prague, have helped to galvanise the team. Jesse Lingard moved to the London Stadium on loan in January and was a revelation.

Moyes’ success in the capital has led to rumours of an Everton return. He spent 11 years at Goodison Park and took them to the top four in 2004/05.

The Toffees will now look at other managerial candidates, with Nuno Espirito Santo the most likely to take over.

Moyes added: “We have made tremendous progress in the past 15 months and that has been a collective effort from everyone at the Club. The players really have been superb but the challenge is for our standards to continue developing.

“We must keep pushing boundaries for consistent improvement as we all aim to continue the growing of the Club.

“I have said it many times before – West Ham United is a huge Club, with a wonderful fanbase and Stadium, and an enormous opportunity for further growth and success.

“I am really excited by the ambition that we have at the Club and we are going to work as hard as we possibly can to keep moving forward and hopefully give our supporters many a great memory.”

Joint-Chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold said they were ‘delighted’ by the manager’s decision to extend his contract.

Sutton heaps praise on West Ham and England star Rice

Chris Sutton has admitted that he has been blown away by Declan Rice for West Ham in the Premier League this season.

Rice captained the Hammers to a Europa League finish against all odds.

The 22-year-old looks set to start in midfield for England at the Euros, with Jordan Henderson’s fitness a concern for Gareth Southgate.

Manchester United ‘bullied’ over Sancho as Germans turn tables

Writing for the Daily Mail, Sutton has rated Rice as an 8/10 player and described him as West Ham’s “protector.”

“[Rice] can put out fires with his impeccable positioning and is now better at carrying the ball,” Sutton said.

The former Blackburn Rovers striker also praised Harry Kane in his column, hailing his ability to finish with most goals and assists in the Premier League this past season.

Kane and England will kick off their Euros campaign against Croatia on Sunday.

The Three Lions were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup by the Croats, but Mateo Kovacic has said this will not impact Sunday’s match.

“We know England have young, fast and agile players,” he said.

“Their fans are also expecting a lot from them. It will be difficult for us.

“I wished my English teammates luck, and they offered the same gesture, but everyone will be fighting for their own side.”

Asked if the 2018 semi-final win over England provides a psychological advantage, Kovacic added: “I don’t think so. It’s been three years.

“This is a new competition and they are focused on this match, which is important because it’s their first of the tournament.”

An increase in midfield options aids the Three Lions’ cause heading into Euro 2020 and Kovacic, fresh from winning the Champions League with Chelsea, is up for the fight.

“There will be a battle in the midfield, but we are ready.

“We are working hard for every match and we will give our best. It is a big tournament so I know a lot is expected from us.”

Also, Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic has insisted that their midfield is “better” than England’s ahead of their Group D opener on Sunday.

“Our midfielders can play against anyone. I think our midfield is better than theirs, so I hope that is somewhere we can do well.”

Pourquoi avoir voulu changer physiquement ?
