Carra calls for Kane out, Grealish in v Czech Republic

Jamie Carragher has called on England boss Gareth Southgate to leave Harry Kane on the bench against the Czech Republic.

Kane was once again poor against Scotland on Friday night and was hauled off after 73 minutes by Southgate.

Roy Keane described Kane as “leggy” and said he was “glad” to see him substituted; now Carragher says he should be rested in England’s final group game against Czech Republic.

England 0-0 Scotland: Rating the players

He said in his Daily Telegraph column: ‘The issues I raised about Harry Kane in the aftermath of the Croatia game were apparent again. Those observations were never about being critical or negative for the sake of it.

‘The only way England can go far in this tournament is with a fit and on-form Kane so everything Southgate does in his team selection and set-up must be about getting the best from him.

‘That is why – for his and the team’s sake – I would leave him on the bench against the Czechs. It’s not about ‘dropping’ him. It’s about thinking ahead, revitalising Kane for the last-16 tie which is going to be against a much stronger opponent than Tuesday’s.

‘He can recharge mentally and physically, liaising with the sports science team and formulating a plan to get himself right for the likely meeting with France, Portugal or Germany in eight or nine days’ time.

‘That would still be a brave decision by Southgate. What I like about Gareth is he is not shy to make those big calls, as shown when he changed a winning team against the Scots.’

Carragher also called for Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson to be involved on Tuesday, writing: ‘Hopefully Harry Maguire is ready for some minutes. So too Jordan Henderson. Their nous would have been invaluable against Scotland.

‘The time is also now for Jack Grealish. England are crying out for more invention in attack.’

Grealish? Sancho? Will Southgate take lid off England team?

‘It has to be a worry that they are not creating enough chances, or working opposition goalkeepers enough.

‘That was the most disappointing aspect of the performance against Scotland, but the jeering of the team at full-time was embarrassing. I will never understand how anyone could deem that justified or helpful, especially directing it at such talented, young players.’

Rio asks how Sancho has upset Southgate

Rio Ferdinand is baffled at Jadon Sancho not playing a minute of England’s first two games at Euro 2020.

Sancho did not even make the bench for last week’s win over Croatia and then stayed on the bench as England stuttered to a 0-o draw against Scotland on Friday night.

Raheem Sterling stayed on the pitch for 90 minutes, ending the game on the right side of the England attack.

Grealish? Sancho? Will Southgate take lid off England team?

Southgate used Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford from the bench but he stuck with his double pivot of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips.

Ferdinand – who has predicted an easy win for England – told this Five YouTube channel: “The substitutions, I thought they were poor.

“You can make a lot of substitutions now, he only made two substitutions when you can make five.

“Utilise that bench, that’s what it’s there for. We’ve got all these players. Sancho? What’s he done? He must have done something behind the scenes.

“He (Sancho) for the last three seasons has the second most goal involvements in this England squad after Sterling and Harry Kane.”

Sancho claimed 16 goals and 20 assists in all competitions last season but appears to be way down Southgate’s pecking order.

On ITV, Ian Wright said: “I think it’s plain to see that he (Kane) doesn’t look at his best, let’s be fair. You look at the chances created, Reece James coming into the team, one of the best crossers from his position but hardly any crosses. Not enough balls into the last third for people to play.

“What’s he taken Foden off for? There’s no way Phil Foden should be leaving the pitch today. It’s very disappointing to see.

“You’ve got someone like Jadon Sancho on the bench, 16 goals and 20 assists doesn’t even get on when we need to create.

“We can talk about Harry Kane and the chances he could have had or how many touches he didn’t have, but at the same time did we really create enough?

“We are supposed to be a team that’s one of the favourites to win but I was embarrassed today.”

Arsenal defender to leave despite Arteta’s attempts to keep him

Arsenal youngster Zech Medley is set to leave the club following five years in north London despite Mikel Arteta’s attempts to keep the defender.

Medley is looking to play regular first-team football, which is not something that Arteta can offer the 20-year-old.

He is poised to join Belgian outfit K.V. Oostende on a permanent transfer reports football.london.

F365 Says: England must hope hindsight masks cowardice

The centre-back spent the 2020-21 season on loan at Kilmarnock and Gillingham, and is expected to make the move to Belgium in the coming days.

It is understood that Arteta was keen on keeping Medley, but he has decided to seek a new challenge abroad in order to get more playing time.

Medley joined the Gunners from Chelsea in 2016 and has been a common fixture in their under 23s side.

He made his first-team debut in the 2018-19 season against Vorskla Poltava in the Europa League.

Making three appearances in total for the first-team, Medley is set to move on.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are very keen to bring England international Ben White to the Emirates.

The Gunners reportedly bid £40million for the centre-back, but Brighton rejected the offer.

White made his Premier League debut with Brighton this term and he shone for them. He made 39 appearances for the Seagulls across all competitions.

Graham Potter’s side only conceded 46 goals this season. This is the joint-best (alongside Aston Villa) out of any bottom half side in 2020/21.

Sky Sports say that talks are “ongoing” between both clubs. Arsenal are expected to go back in with a second offer for White.

Earlier this month, White’s Brighton teammate – Adam Lallana – praised the defender for stepping up for “bigger” games:

“In any case, having played alongside Ben at Brighton & Hove Albion this season, I can vouch that he is a player who steps up the bigger the game.

“He is someone who looks even more comfortable when in the company of the best players.

“His physique is something that he has worked on throughout this season. At 6ft, perhaps there were question marks over his size as a centre half, but those have been dispelled.

“The fact that he has also played right-back this season illustrates his versatility and that will be the main reason why [Gareth] Southgate has called him into the squad after the injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold.”

Alonso: Alpine ‘looking quite competitive’ after strong Friday

Fernando Alonso says Alpine is “looking quite competitive” following its opening day of running at the French Grand Prix with the Enstone squad leading F1’s midfield runners on Friday.

Alonso clocked in fourth at the end of FP2, just 0.468s adrift from pace setter Max Verstappen, while Esteban Ocon concluded the session P6.

The Spaniard described running conditions as “tricky” but Alpine’s A521 appears well adapted to the Circuit Paul Ricard’s more conventional layout.

“We faced quite tricky conditions today with some strong winds and high track temperatures, but I think we can be quite pleased with what we managed to achieve from Friday practice,” said Alonso.

“We tested a few items in FP1 and then we followed our programme for the afternoon in FP2 with some decent mileage clocked.

“We’ll analyse all of our data now and this evening, but so far I think we look quite competitive here so let’s see how we go tomorrow.”

Ocon said Alpine’s performance looked “promising” although the Frenchman admitted it was early days still.

“Today’s practice has been solid,” he said. “We’re back into the top ten for the moment, but we know it’s still early days. Both cars have good pace – that’s promising – and the aim is to keep working hard and consolidate this pace.

“The car feels good and the team has been working hard on that. There are, of course, areas to improve, and there’s more performance to find.”

2021 French Grand Prix Free Practice 2 – Results

Alpine racing director Davide Brivio hailed a Friday programme that had been “well executed”, and said the team’s focus is now on ensuring that it follows up with another solid performance on Saturday.

“It’s been a busy but well executed practice programme by the team today,” said the Italian.

“Both drivers did a great job in both sessions and, looking at the timesheets, we’re in and amongst the good positions.

“This circuit is different to the last two tracks we’ve visited, as it’s a more conventional layout for Formula 1, which perhaps suits our car a little more.

“It’s a promising start and we will remain focused with the job we have to do this weekend. That begins with Free Practice 3 tomorrow, where we will try to prepare ourselves for qualifying and ensure we follow up on today’s performance.”

Ince claims Kane is yet to perform at a big tournament for England

Paul Ince claims Harry Kane is yet to perform for England at a big tournament despite winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup.

England started their Euro 2020 campaign by winning the opening game at the finals for the first time in the competition’s history.

Raheem Sterling hit the only goal in a 1-0 win over Group D rivals Croatia in a game where Kane was largely on the periphery.

Euro 2020: Isak focus, Croatia cycle, England v Scotland

Kane scored six goals as the Three Lions reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018 but Ince reckons his “performances weren’t great” then either.

Ince told Paddy Power: “Harry Kane will play against Scotland, but he will be disappointed with his performance against Croatia. He is world-class, but I’m yet to see him perform in a big tournament.

“Even though he got the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot, his performances weren’t great. I expect him to put on a great performance against Scotland.”

England host Scotland at Wembley on Friday night as they look to guarantee qualification from the group stages and Ince has made his prediction for the game.

The former Manchester United midfielder added: “Scotland need something from this game. If they lose, they’re out of the tournament. There were such high hopes for Scotland’s squad, they’ve got brilliant players like Andy Robertson and Scott McTominay. They’re good enough to qualify for the next stage, but they’ve got to get past England first, which is tough.

“England were superb for 20 minutes against Croatia, after that it was a professional job. England must raise their game, though I can’t see us losing. It will be a repeat of the result in Euro 96: England 2 Scotland 0.

“Raheem Sterling is a player that English fans pick out for criticism, but he’s always been very good for England, and it was great to see him get his goal against Croatia. I fancy Sterling to score again, with Harry Kane getting the other goal.”

But Ince has warned England that they cannot afford to take Scotland lightly, he continued: “At Euro 96 we faced Scotland in the second match and that was huge. We drew against the Swiss and knew we had to win.

“We made mistakes, sometimes saying, ‘we should roll over the Scottish team’. It didn’t pan out that way at Wembley in ’96, Scotland played really well.

“People talk about Gazza’s goal, but the pivotal moment was David Seaman’s wonderful penalty save from Gary McAllister. We won comfortably and that was a turning point for us in the tournament, and positivity emanated from the press and England fans.

“England can’t believe this is a foregone conclusion because, even though Scotland got turned over by the Czechs, we can’t think it’s going to be easy and Gareth will tell the squad that.”

Cole claims ‘no one respected’ Inter Milan star at Chelsea

Ashley Cole says “no one respected” Romelu Lukaku at Chelsea but that his spells on loan gave him the “self-belief” to compete.

The 28-year-old scored twice in Belgium’s Euro 2020 opener against Russia on Saturday, and spent three years at Chelsea earlier in his career.

Lukaku – who has been linked with a return to Stamford Bridge – struggled to make an impact with the Blues under various managers and made the move to Everton in 2014.

Never go back? Why Lukaku to Chelsea is different

Following spells at the Toffees and then Manchester United, Lukaku made the move to Inter Milan where he has thrived, helping them to win the Serie A title this season.

The 28-year-old scored 30 goals and assisted ten in 44 appearances in the 2020-21 campaign for Serie A giants Inter.

And Cole has revealed how it was hard for Lukaku to make an impact in the Chelsea first-team with Didier Drogba ahead of him.

Cole said on ITV: “He joined as a kid, he joined as a 17-year-old.

“[He was] a raw talent, his game understanding was not great. Didier Drogba was his kind of father figure who used to help him in terms of developing his technique and understanding of movement.

“And then I think the two loans really gave him that self belief that he was good enough. Yes, he was still young but he still had a point to prove.

“I think no one kind of respected him at Chelsea, in terms of the fans. When he did play, was he going to be the top striker for Chelsea? He had Didier Drogba in front of him.

“For him to go on loan and prove to himself, he definitely came back with that self-belief, that courage, and now his performances have been second to none, he’s been quality.”

Since leaving Manchester United in 2019 for Inter Milan, Lukaku has bagged 64 goals in 95 matches and won a Serie A title.

Jose Mourinho managed him during his spell at United and he commented recently that he was “still developing” during his time at Old Trafford.

“These two years at Inter Milan have given him the stature and the self-confidence that he didn’t have before,” Mourinho told The Times. “At Chelsea, he was still a kid. At Manchester United, he was still developing. At Inter he became the top man.

“He became loved – a big love from the supporters, love from teammates, great relations with the coach.

“He’s a big guy, physically so strong, but there is also a kid inside who needs that love, needs that support, needs to feel important.”

Smith Rowe told to ‘do himself a whole heap of good’ and leave Arsenal

Trevor Sinclair has advised Emile Smith Rowe to think carefully about his future at Arsenal amid reports linking him with a move to Aston Villa.

According to BBC Sport, Villa had a £25million bid rejected by Arsenal for Smith Rowe earlier this week, with the Gunners seemingly unwilling to part ways with the 20-year-old.

Having already added a playmaker to their ranks in Emiliano Buendia, signed from Norwich City for a club-record fee, concerns have been raised in some quarters that Villa are looking to sell Grealish.

FEATURE: Every completed Premier League transfer this summer

Sinclair thinks the departure of the Villa captain could open a door for a player like Smith Rowe, who, despite some fine performances towards the end of last season, is yet to establish himself as an elite playmaker at Premier League level.

The former West Ham man told talkSPORT: “The biggest thing out of all that is, why are they [Villa] looking to buy him?

“I think that points me towards the direction that Jack Grealish could potentially be moving away from Aston Villa.

“I have said it before about Smith Rowe. He reminds me of Paul Merson. Before the ball is coming into him, he’s looking to play it around the corner, first time, then get after it and join in.

“I feel he could be a player that could go in, if Grealish did go, and develop his game. Start playing Premier League football and do himself a whole heap of good.”

Elsewhere at Arsenal, a £40million bid for Brighton defender Ben White has reportedly been rejected.

The Gunners had made White a primary target for this summer, with the 23-year-old having enjoyed a fine season at the Amex.

After Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered a thigh injury in the 1-0 friendly win over Austria, White was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros.

Adam Lallana is confident the defender won’t be fazed by the pressure. He told The Times: “In any case, having played alongside Ben at Brighton & Hove Albion this season, I can vouch that he is a player who steps up the bigger the game.

“He is someone who looks even more comfortable when in the company of the best players.”

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight taking In Your House Takeover, Stardom PPV and the rest of the latest news. You can also send questions to the show tonight to [email protected]

Antonio Inoki, 78, had emergency surgery due to an intestinal issue a few weeks ago. He has been hospitalized for much of this year with various health problems and his lower back is in a lot of pain and deteriorating leaving him mostly wheelchair bound.

Sinclair is looking at adding a streaming sports channel. (thanks to Mike Kuzmuk)

NXT Takeover tonight at 8 p.m. on Peacock from Orlando, FL:

Xia Li vs.  Mercedes Martinez. The biggest test of Li’s career to date. Li is currently a -950 favorite to win
Cameron Grimes vs. LA Knight in a ladder match to revive the old Million Dollar belt. The build has been comedy oriented. Grimes is outstanding and this will be a new environment for him. He started training with the ladder experts like the Hardys as a teenager. Knight’s been given a big chance here. Grimes is a very slight betting favorite at -125.
Bronson Reed & MSK defend both the North American title and NXT tag titles against Santos Escobar & Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza. I’m not a fan of singles and tag titles being defended in matches that aren’t singles or four-man tag matches. But it looks to be a good action match. Reed & MSK are -850 favorites.
Raquel Gonzalez vs. Ember Moon for the women’s title. Another big test for Gonzalez who is a huge favorite to retain at -1000.
Karrion Kross defends the NXT title against Adam Cole, Pete Dunne, Kyle O’Reilly and Johnny Gargano. By all rights given the talent involved and that they are likely to be going 30:00 or more, this should be a classic match. The last updated odds had Kross as the favorite at -250, while Cole is +550, O’Reilly is +750, Gargano is +1000 and Dunne is +1100.

We’re doing polls this weekend on both UFC 263 and NXT Takeover In Your House so you can leave a thumbs up, down or middle along with a best and worst match from each show to [email protected].

How is this for a story on Brandon Moreno:

He debuted on the Ultimate Fighter and was the last man picked
He was cut by UFC after some losses
His weight class was scheduled to be dropped except Henry Cejudo saved it
He became the first Mexican-born UFC champion last night.

Moreno’s title win was one of the best feel good moments in UFC history.

Dana White last night said that he thinks Colby Covington and not Leon Edwards should get the next welterweight title shot at Kamaru Usman.

Nate Diaz said he wants to fight again in the next few months. Diaz got an amazing pop and reaction throughout his fight. If he had pulled that win out in the closing seconds it would be talked about for fight of the year.

White said that he thought last night would be Demian Maia’s last UFC fight. It was the last fight of Maia’s contract and he’s 43 years old.

As far as Lauren Murphy vs. Joanne Calderwood’s fight for a potential women’s flyweight title shot, which Murphy won via split decision, Murphy won round two and Calderwood won round three. The first round was very close and could have gone either way so it was just a close fight.  Media scores were 55 percent for Calderwood and 45 percent for Murphy.

Today’s is the 12th anniversary of the death of Mitshuaru Misawa from a severed spine from neck problems. Misawa was among the greatest wrestlers of all-time and as far as a major arena is concerned, Misawa at Budokan Hall would rank with Bruno Sammartino in Madison Square Garden as the biggest and most successful long-term draw in an arena of that size in history.

Lots of stuff made the top 20 Google search charts this past week. UFC was the biggest thing over the weekend with 2.65 million searches from last night’s Israel Adesanya vs.  Marvin Vettori fight, a number that was about what you would have expected for a show like that.  Besides Adesanya as part of the main event, the key names searched for included Nate Diaz, Brandon Moreno and Paul Craig. Craig’s submission was No. 4 earlier today at 50,000.  For yesterday, the Tik Tok vs. YouTube fight show did 1.2 million for No. 2, Diaz was No. 4 with 500,000.  Moreno was No. 10 at 100,000.  Aaron Carter in a celebrity boxing match was No. 5 on Friday at 200,000.  Claressa Shields making her MMA debut on Thursday was No. 11 at 100,000.  The Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul show did 5 million.  NXT Takeovers have charted before but most often they don’t. I would not expect tonight’s show to do so.

The Mark Henry wanting to bring Adam Scherr (Braun Strowman) to AEW story.

With the A&E bio season over, there is a Most Wanted Treasures episode going head-to-head with Takeover from 8-10 p.m. on A&E. The show features Stephanie McMahon enlisting Mark Henry and Paul Wight to search for Andre the Giant memorabilia. This was filmed before either Henry or Wight went to AEW.

WWE

Cara Noir defends his Progress title against Elijah in the main event for the show that takes place 6/19 and airs on Peacock.
