Today I hung out on the beach. Then I worked in my room. And hung out on beach again. A pretty good day

Hamilton: Red Bull ‘will be really hard to beat’

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton says that Red Bull definitely has the upper hand in Austria and will be hard to beat at their home track this weekend.

Hamilton was a third of a second off the pace set by Max verstappen in the Friday afternoon timesheets, although he had managed to go faster in a lap subsequently deleted for exceeding track limits.

“I think we were a little bit down, particularly over a single lap,” Hamilton suggested afterwards, saying that todays’ running had been “a work in progress.”

“Generally over the day the car felt relatively solid,” he reported. “I didn’t really have too many big problems today. I’m happier with where we got the car to.

“I’ve been working flat out all week trying to understand where I want to put the car. I’m hopeful that the hard work starts paying off soon.

“[There were] some weaknesses and as I said coming into the weekend, we’re losing on the straight a considerable amount,” he continued. “We’ve just got to keep working to try and rectify that.

“It’s very close I think with the whole pack,” he suggested. “The Red Bulls, definitely, will be really hard to beat.

“I think one of my laps got taken away and it was a lot closer. It’s close, but as I said – particularly in race pace – they were really, really strong.

“They’re throwing some really good punches right now, so we’ve just got to have our guards up and make sure we’re ready for the return.

“I think they’ve just got the edge, maybe more. We don’t know what they’re going to do when they turn that engine up.

Hamilton pledged to “do everything I can during the evening to make steps in the right direction” but admitted he felt he was “kind of eking most of it out of the car” already.

Benfica interested in £12m Liverpool winger

Benfica are looking to bring Harry Wilson to Portugal with Liverpool believed to be open to selling the winger this summer.

The Wales star is valued by The Reds at a minimum of £12million, but there has been no official bid from Benfica as of yet.

Goal have reported that it isn’t only the Portuguese giants interested in Wilson with West Brom and Brentford said to be keen on prying the 24-year-old away from Anfield too.

Tyldesley and McCoist: The Euro 2020 champions

Wilson is rumoured to be keen to leave Liverpool in a search for consistent game time after making only two competitive appearances for the club.

The Welshman has spent time on loan at Derby, Hull, Bournemouth and most recently Cardiff City accumulating 38 appearances for the Welsh club last season.

He managed to score seven goals and register 12 assists in his stint with The Bluebirds and is currently on international duty with the Welsh national team for Euro 2020.

It is also reported that Swansea City could be interested in Wilson with manager Steve Cooper known to be a big fan of his after working closely with him in Liverpool’s academy.

The Swans tried to bring Wilson in on loan last season, but ended up losing out to Cardiff for the player’s signature.

Despite Benfica’s strong interest, they are said to be quite far off the valuation put on the Wrexham born winger by Liverpool and discussions have been halted as a result.

Liverpool have made a habit of selling fringe players for large sums in recent seasons with Dominic Solanke heading to Bournemouth for over £19million and Rhian Brewster joining Sheffield United for £23.5million.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to raise funds as the club try and fight for the Premier League title again next season following a disappointing injury riddled campaign this year.

The Liverpool boss is said to be interested on brining in Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, but the Scotland international has a rumoured price tag of £50million.

Klopp’s interest is supposedly ‘very real’ and he is a big fan of Mcginn as the club looks to replace Georginio Wijnaldum who left to join French giants PSG.

Euros penalty increase shows VAR works, says UEFA chief

UEFA’s refereeing chief believes the doubling of penalty awards at Euro 2020 compared to the 2016 finals shows VAR is working.

But Roberto Rosetti also warned the fabric of football was in danger if officials began penalising minor infringements.

Fourteen spot-kicks were given in the 36 group games, compared to seven at the same stage of Euro 2016.

MEDIAWATCH: Klopp on wind-up as Rashford ‘does not understand the emotion’

Rosetti, the tournament’s chief refereeing officer, felt each one had been the correct call, but said the original principles of VAR – minimum intervention for maximum benefit – must never be forgotten.

“We know that this is an important project and it’s impossible to come back. There is more accuracy for sure,” he said.

“Before the VAR project there were many, many fouls in the penalty area missed by the referees. Now, it’s impossible to miss these fouls.

“We know very well the strength but also the limits of the project. VAR is a Formula One project, and for this Formula One project we need top, expert pilots. We need to find the correct balance in the line of intervention, because our target is to keep football like it is.

“It’s not acceptable to study all the minor pushing or pulling, or minor contacts and marginal contacts independently. The laws of the game are clear. We want the minimum interference for the maximum benefit and we want to intervene (only) for clear and obvious mistakes.”

Rosetti highlighted penalties which had been awarded after a VAR check for a step on the foot of the opponent – David Alaba on Denzel Dumfries in the Holland v Austria match and Jakub Moder on Gerard Moreno in the Spain v Poland game.

He pointed out that the VAR did not intervene when England forward Raheem Sterling went down under a challenge from Scotland’s Andrew Robertson at Wembley last Friday because there had only been “marginal contact”.

Asked why no penalty was awarded for a late challenge by Bruno Fernandes on Kingsley Coman when France faced Portugal on Wednesday, Rosetti said: “We don’t like soft penalties.”

The standard of refereeing at the tournament so far has been widely praised.

Rosetti said there had been 12 VAR corrections – seven of them direct and five via on-field review. In all, 179 incidents were checked and in 91.6 per cent of cases the decision on the pitch was correct.

Half of those corrections were offside calls. He said there had been 21 tight offside incidents, six reviewed by VAR and no wrong decisions.

He also felt the updated handball law had been well observed at the tournament, stating that fouls had only been called when the player was making his body unnaturally bigger or, in the case of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, when his accidental handball immediately preceded him scoring a goal.

Rosetti praised the attitude and behaviour of the players, with 105 fewer fouls in the group stage of Euro 2020 compared to Euro 2016 – 806 instead of 911.

There were 31 fewer yellow cards – 98 compared to 129 – and the same number of red cards – two.

Chelsea among trio chasing Insigne amid contract ‘silence’

Chelsea are among a number of clubs said to be interested in signing Italy forward Lorenzo Insigne this summer.

The Napoli star is set to become a free agent at the end of next season and may be available in a cut-price deal this summer.

That’s according to Italian outlet Il Mattino (via the Mirror) who claim Arsenal and Spurs have joined Chelsea in keeping tabs on the 30-year-old.

The report states that there is ‘silence’ from Napoli over a new deal.

Gossip: Arsenal blow over £50m target, Grealish confusion

Insigne was in fine form for the Italian club last term, notching 19 goals and seven assists in Serie A.

And he’s been a key part of Roberto Mancini’s Italian side at Euro 2020, scoring once and helping secure nine points from nine to top Group A.

Italy face Austria in the last 16 and Insigne insists they will be well prepared for the challenge.

“We watched some of Austria’s games, they run and they are very aggressive as they always want to recover the ball quickly. We must study them, but most importantly, we must focus on ourselves,” Insigne said.

“We want to play a great game and win, the most important thing is to win the game, even if I don’t score.

“We are aware that an episode can change the game. We are serene and the younger ones have proved to be ready. Players like Berardi, Locatelli and Barella have never played in these competitions, but they were decisive against Turkey and they helped us to achieve our goal.”

Insigne is playing the European Championships for the second time in his career. The first time he played this competition was four years ago when Antonio Conte was in charge of the Azzurri.

“I was younger during the other competitions, but in the past, Italy played with a different system, so I had to adapt,” the 30-year-old said.

“I’ve always thanked Conte and Prandelli for bringing me to the World Cup and the Euros, but now I have more chances with Mancini. This system is suitable for my characteristics and those of all the other players.

“I have a big responsibility wearing the No.10 shirt, but I don’t want to put pressure on my shoulders. I always try to be light-hearted. The coach gives me many suggestions, he was a footballer, so he has a lot to teach us.

“The youths are giving us their enthusiasm. This is the first time I play an international competition as a protagonist and I am proud of it. I am living a fairytale and I am going beyond my limits to repay the coach’s and the team’s trust.”

Morata hits out at Spain fans sending family death threats

Alvaro Morata has revealed that he and his family – including his young children – have received death threats due to his performances for Spain at Euro 2020.

The Juventus striker has struggled in front of goal for Spain and despite a 5-0 win over Slovakia, Morata saw his penalty saved when the game was still goalless.

And he has explained how he was unable to sleep after the draw with Poland, where he scored but also missed a number of good chances.

Sections of the Spain fans – in a pre-tournament friendly against Portugal – chanted ‘Morata, how bad you are’.

The Mailbox offers England tactical plans to beat Germany…

And Morata now says his wife and three sons have been subjected to abuse.

Morata told the Spanish radio station Cadena Cope : “Maybe I have not done my job as I should.

“I understand that I am criticised because I have not scored a goal, but I wish people would put themselves in the place of what it is like to receive threats, to be told that your children should die.

“Every time I get to the dressing room, my phone goes somewhere else. What bothers me is that they tell my wife, that they tell my children – they are going through Seville with their dad’s name on their shirts. They tell them everything.

“I had to put my phone away this week.

“I didn’t sleep at all these past few days, because of the adrenaline.

“I didn’t sleep for nine hours after the (Poland) game – I understand criticism for not scoring, I accept it. I wish people would put themselves in that position of your family receiving death threats.

“I’m very happy, but it bothers me not to do my job well. The fans whistled at me before warming up, but I’m happy to take the penalty (against Slovakia) and have missed it.”

The former Chelsea striker has previously opened up on struggling with his mental health in his time at Stamford Bridge, but insists he is in a better place to put criticism behind him as Spain enter the knockout stages.

Spain will face Croatia in the Round of 16 on Monday with Morata adding: “I’m fine, maybe a few years ago I would have been screwed. I’ve spent a couple of weeks isolated from everything. I’m super happy and super motivated with reaching the Round of 16.

“We talked in training how football has changed, in the last Euros we started better and we arrived in the Round of 16 in another way. It’s football and I’m happy, whoever doesn’t believe it, doesn’t know me.”

Kelleher will ‘push’ Alisson after new Liverpool contract

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has pledged to continue pushing first-choice Alisson Becker after signing a new contract.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a landmark season, making five appearances for the Reds in the Premier League and Champions League to establish himself as number two at Anfield, while also making his Republic of Ireland debut.

“For me, it was a positive moment to commit my future to the club for the next few years,” Kelleher, who had made four cup appearances in the 2019-20 campaign, told liverpoolfc.com after signing what is understood to be a five-year deal.

“It’s such a big club and it’s an honour to be a part of it, so when I got the chance to sign for a few more years I was obviously delighted. I just want to keep my progress going at the club.

“It was a big year for me in terms of playing the first-team games this year and more important games; being thrown into the Champions League and Premier League games was big for my development and being able to handle that.

“It gave me a lot of confidence to try to push on, to try to keep pushing Ali because I can play at that kind of level as well and do well.

“I am looking forward, try to keep pushing him and we’ll see what happens.”

£50m Arsenal target has ‘everything’ to succeed – Seaman

David Seaman has said that Ben White has “got everything” needed to succeed at Arsenal and become a top player amid rumours of a proposed transfer to the Emirates stadium.

Arsenal are reportedly lining up a second bid for the Brighton defender after having an initial bid of around £40million rejected by the Seagulls.

Seaman believes the centre-back would be a good addition to Mikel Arteta’s side and cited his physique and temperament as reasons why he would succeed at Arsenal.

The statistics that point to England starting XI

The Arsenal legend spoke to Goal about the potential transfer.

He said: “He’s got everything [needed] to go and take hold of it and give it his best shot.

“He’s got the physique, he’s got the temperament. At Leeds it’s a high-press, high-tempo game, so his fitness is also not in doubt.

“The only question mark you can put on him is can he play in the big games? But we’ll just have to wait and see, because he’s not played in them yet.

“Hopefully he will go on and play for England and when he does that, hopefully he will carry on [with his development].

“Would he be a good signing for Arsenal? Of course he would because he’s a good player.”

White made 39 appearances for Brighton last season and won their award for Player of the Season.

The defender is just 23 years old, but Seaman doesn’t think that age is an issue.

He said: “No, not at all, not now, It’s like when you see the England team now, you look at Mason Mount and Phil Foden, those sort of guys. They are young guys and they are just getting on with it.

“At that age, they just have no fear. They just want to play and enjoy it.

“It’s when they get a little bit older and they’ve had a bit of stick that they start worrying.”

Despite many fans believing Arsenal need to focus on bringing in an attacking midfielder, Arteta looks set to add White to his squad in an attempt to solidify the defence following the departure of David Luiz.
