Wolff defends ‘destroyed’ Hamilton: ‘He doesn’t make mistakes’

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff had admitted that Lewis Hamilton has been badly affected by what happened at the end of Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku – and that he shares his driver’s dismay.

“Both of us are destroyed to be honest,” Wolff told the media after the end of the race. “But it is for him, obviously, as a driver – it’s so close and then it’s all gone.

Hamilton had bounced back from a poor Friday to take a front row spot for the start of the race. He briefly led before a delay on pit lane dropped him behind the two Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

Verstappen’s retirement with tyre failure in the closing stages gave Hamilton a chance to seize victory if he could pass Perez at the final restart, but he ended up running too deep into turn 1 and dropped out of the top ten altogether.

“It just feels painful. You can see we had the win, we had the hand almost close to the trophy because Max didn’t score.”

But he defended his driver and refuted suggestions that it was a big mistake by Hamilton that had cost the team this weekend.

“No, I think he had the position. I think the move was totally okay on the inside,” he claimed. “I think that was a perfect start and the perfect move at the beginning.

“It can’t be called a mistake. It was just when Sergio came over, [Lewis] touched a button and the brake balance changed,” he told Sky Sports F1.

“The brake balance went all the way forward and ultimately the car couldn’t stop.

“He just doesn’t make any mistakes. That is what you need to remember. I wouldn’t wish for anybody else to be in the car.”

Wolff denied that the clouds of smoke billowing from the brake ducts of Hamilton’s car had been a factor. “I don’t think that was the problem. I think it was more a simple, how can I say, finger problem.

“It was just that the brakes were not there, or were not set to the right position, and that is why he missed the braking point.

“But I don’t know. It’s just the emotion of frustration. It’s just so overwhelming at the moment,” he admitted. “I would have taken third or this result.

Wolff said that the disappointment was even worse because of how close this world championship is shaping up, with Max Verstappen still leading the drivers standings and Red Bull now 26 points ahead of Mercedes in the constructors battle.

“From this year’s running, we just need to be the best. The best of us, the best that we have,” he stressed. “Operationally, we just need to perform faultlessly and all of us haven’t haven’t done that the last two weekends.

“We still have our underlying issues, that we’re not getting off the start into the happy window of the tyres with the set-up.

“Also after the stops we make operational mistakes and we lose all the time that you can see today in the twisty old town and city. This is what happened in Monaco.

“It’s not a shocker now that the car that won three races is nowhere,” he admitted. “It is not. We know the deficit, we’ve seen that in these particular parts of the tracks.

“We know that we have gaps that we just need to overcome. The 90 degree corners we’ve actually been quite competitive. it was all the twisty bits.

“You could see in the middle sector we were really close, it was quick on the straight but the middle sector was a total shocker.”

“And we haven’t given the drivers a competitive package this weekend,” he commented. “Far from a competitive package.

“And that is the frustration. It’s not only the incident at the end [of the Azerbaijan GP] that frustrates, its overall not meeting our own expectations. All of us together, Lewis, engineers, myself, for everybody.

“What I take away is that we must bring our ‘A’ game to fight for this championship, and our car was not there all weekend.”

But Wolff said that he and Hamilton would work through the current problems and find a solution.

“We have four hours together on the plane now. Maybe we’ll drink,” Wolff said.. “Maybe that’s not good to say on Sky, but we will drink!

“We have no doubt, this is a team that is so strong and so angry. We’ve got to transform the anger into positive force. We’re warriors and we’re going to come back.”

Pundit fears two transfers worth £270m will put Liverpool behind rivals

If Manchester City sign Harry Kane and Chelsea seal a deal for Erling Haaland then it will “push them clear” of Liverpool, according to John Aldridge.

The Reds recovered from a poor run of results during the middle of  2020/21 season to finish third and qualify for the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had to play most of the campaign without centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who picked up long-term injuries.

Ten Championship players ripe for Premier League transfers

Man City were head and shoulders above all the other teams in the Premier League, finishing 17 points ahead of Liverpool, but the Reds did find themselves two points clear of fourth-placed Chelsea, who won the Champions League.

However, Aldridge is worried that Kane – who Spurs reportedly want £150m for – and Haaland will go to rivals City and Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Aldridge wrote in the Sunday World: “Liverpool should be trying to sign Harry Kane from Spurs this summer, maybe even Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain, but it is never going to happen.

“Having just witnessed a season that saw his strikers miss chance after chance, Klopp doesn’t need me to tell him that he needs a top-class finisher to play in the Roberto Firmino role in his team.

“Sadly, the top-tier players are out of Liverpool’s reach, with the wages that Chelsea and City can offer.

“While Klopp will be thinking that a team featuring a fit-again Virgil van Dijk and new signing Ibrahima Konate can give his team the defensive solidity they lacked in recent months, City and Chelsea could rewrite the game once more if they do what I expect them to do this summer.

“No one will be surprised if Kane joins City. If that deal goes through, it will take Pep Guardiola’s side to a different level and push them clear of Liverpool’s reach.

“Then you would expect Thomas Tuchel to be given a huge transfer kitty to work with at Chelsea. That would allow him to go after a world-class striker like Erling Haaland with the realistic hope of getting him from Borussia Dortmund.

“Haaland might want half-a-million quid a week and would cost a whopping £120million, but moneybags Abramovich could fund that kind of deal if he wanted to. So don’t be surprised if they try and make it happen.

“City, with Kane up front and Chelsea with Haaland leading their line, would be different propositions compared to the two teams we saw in this season’s Champions League final.

“That is the great unknown as we head into this summer.”

Arsenal ‘begin work’ on €40m deal after losing target to Leicester

Arsenal are ready to turn their attention to Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves after losing out on their top forward target to Leicester City, according to reports.

The Gunners have been linked with several players in recent days, including Norwich City’s Emiliano Buendia and Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier.

Atletico are reportedly proposing that Arsenal swap Hector Bellerin for Trippier, despite speculation that the England international will end up at Manchester United this summer.

Gossip: City to bank £11m as Man Utd agree terms with £81.5m target

Buendia, meanwhile, looks set to choose Aston Villa over Arsenal after both clubs submitted offers for the Argentinian.

And, according to the Sunday Times, Arsenal have missed out on another target too with Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard ‘understood to prefer a reunion at at Leicester City with Brendan Rodgers’.

Their failure to sign Edouard has seen the Gunners ‘turn to’ Ruben Neves, who has been ‘made available for transfer this summer as they seek to raise funds to refresh their squad under the incoming manager Bruno Lage’.

It is understood that Wolves rejected a bid of €60m at the end of Neves’ first season in the Premier League, while their valuation back then was said to be €80m.

Neves scored five goals and contributed one assist in his 36 Premier League appearances for Wolves this term.

The Sunday Times adds that Arsenal hope they can land Neves for ‘half’ of the €80m figure that he was valued at in 2019 with the Portugal international only having two years to run on his existing deal at Molineux.

That would stack up against another report in The Athletic last week which claimed Neves would be available for around £35m.

Wolves have ‘allowed Neves, Pedro Neto and Adama Traore to be marketed to leading European clubs after a testing campaign in which they finished 13th in Premier League’.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Petit has taken a swipe at his former club’s transfer policy in a recent interview, he said: “I don’t recognise the club anymore. I don’t see the Arsenal blood on the pitch.

“It’s not the question of money because Arsenal have the power to put £70million on a player if they want to. It’s a question of profile – who do you want for your teams in terms of character and quality?

“What are Arsenal doing in the transfer market? I don’t understand it. They spend money – a lot of money sometimes – but on the wrong player.”

He added: “This is the turning point for Arsenal, they are at the end of the world. They need to take the right direction or else they’ll drop, drop and drop again and it’ll be more difficult for them to attract players.

“With all the respect I have for [Bukayo] Saka and [Emile] Smith Rowe – they have been playing brilliantly, especially Saka – but the other players – the experienced players – what have they brought to the team since they’ve arrived? You have to look at yourself in the mirror.”

‘Man Utd are an uncontrolled mess and Cavani is their best defender’

Man Utd are “softer than a muffin” and Edinson Cavani is their best defender, according to one of David de Gea’s former coaches.

The Red Devils finished a mammoth 33 points behind Liverpool in 2019/20 when Jurgen Klopp’s men won the Premier League title.

But, partly due to Liverpool being a lot worse this season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have passed the Reds this term, finishing five points ahead of them in second.

Gossip: City to bank £11m as Man Utd agree terms with £81.5m target

There has been a definite improvement at Old Trafford this season but there are still doubts over a number of positions in Solskjaer’s team,

Not least the goalkeeping spot, with De Gea and Dean Henderson sharing the number one position all campaign with Spaniard coming under fire over his performances in recent seasons.

However, former Spain under-21 coach Gabino Rodriguez reckons De Gea is “suffering the consequences” of playing in front of Solskjaer’s weak defence.

“I always believe the team is a true reflection of the character of its coach. Look at the one led by Sir Alex Ferguson and that would show no mercy,” Rodriguez told The Sun.

“Ole’s team is softer than a muffin and David is suffering the consequences of the defensive frailties.

“You need to protect your best asset in the team, but there is just an uncontrolled mess between midfield and defence with gaps. Basically Ole’s team has a brutal defensive weakness. The two centre-backs are too slow, they are not commanding and other teams are well aware of it.

“The big problem is Solskjaer’s tactical organisation. United’s defensive deficiencies are undervaluing De Gea and Ole just doesn’t convince me. In the old days, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes not only dictated games, but did the dirty work and were the defensive backbone. In Ole’s team, Edinson Cavani is the best defender!”

Meanwhile, Man Utd legend Gary Pallister thinks the race between Henderson and De Gea for the number one spot is “too close to call”.

Speaking recently, Pallister told the Metro: “I’m probably thinking the same as Ole and it’s a tricky one, I’m not sure which way I’d go.

“He’s given Henderson a chance there, he played all of the league games for a while and David was the Europa League keeper, which was a role reversal really.

“He was basically saying Henderson was his No. 1 at that time. I think it’s too close to call. They’ve both had blips, Henderson came into the team with a big reputation but he’s had some uncomfortable moments.

“David’s not hit the heights recently but he’s been such an important player for United for so long now. David has proven he can do it at Old Trafford and that’s still up for Dean to prove.

“Henderson looks like a confident kid, he’s obviously got the ability. If he gets more game-time, hopefully he will become more comfortable.

“But he’s had a couple of uncomfortable moments and it’s left Ole with food for thought I think.”

‘It goes on’ – Hoddle suggests England players may be ‘tapping up’ Kane

Glenn Hoddle has suggested that England players from Man United and Man City could be “tapping up” Harry Kane during the European Championships.

Kane has told Spurs that he wants to leave the club this summer. He has spoken openly about his desire to win team trophies before he retires.

Upon hearing this news, Man United, Man City and Chelsea have all enquired about the striker.

Sancho is the forgotten piece in England’s attacking puzzle

If he is to leave, Kane will have to wait until after the Euros finish to secure his move. Hoddle has told Betfair that the transfer rumours will “affect” Kane a little bit:

“I’m sure it goes on. I don’t think it would go on in front of the management, but I’m sure it goes on.

“I remember talking to Ray Clemence as a player, trying to get him to come down to Tottenham from Liverpool. So yeah, it goes on, I can tell you that. But it wasn’t something I came across that was that alarming as England manager, no.

“He’s [only] human. That is going to affect him a little bit. He can say what he wants to say, but he would have preferred to have everything sorted out – whatever needs to be sorted out. He’s still on a three-year contract at Tottenham.

“But I think Harry’s a professional, he’s a team player enough to know that he’s got to switch that off and focus solely on England.

“What happens in that short period of time, it’s not a long old season he’s got to go through and have a quick break after and get it sorted. He’s got to switch his mind on.

“Some players I think it would affect, but I don’t think it will affect him on the pitch. The in-between is going to be the problem.

“The hotel and the bit of travelling, whatever. It’s just human nature. You’re going to have some sort of contact with family and agents to see what’s going on.

“But he’s professional enough to switch it off when he goes over that white line, and that’s the main thing for Gareth [Southgate] and the England team.”

Man Utd and Aston Villa both keen on EFL talent

Manchester United have entered the race to sign Fleetwood Town teenager Josh Feeney, who has been linked with a move to Aston Villa.

Feeney, a central defender, is the current captain of England Under-16s looks set to leave the League One club at the end of this month, with a Premier League side being his likely destination.

The Daily Mail say that Villa are the favourites to land the youngster, but that United have made contact with the North West club as they look to hijack a deal.

MAILBOX: Are Jack Grealish and his calves overhyped or not?

The defender becomes a free agent next month, so a tribunal will determine what fee Fleetwood will receive for the 16-year-old, but it is believed that the fee will be a six-figure sum.

Feeney hasn’t made an appearance for the League One side but was named in three matchday squads in the 2020-21 campaign.

Either Villa or United would be an ideal destination for the young defender, with both clubs having a strong history of bringing players through to the first team from the youth ranks.

The Daily Mail also reported last month that Celtic, Wolves, Leicester and Leeds were all interested in Feeney.

However, it is clear that Villa are the frontrunners as things stand.

Dean Smith is likely to be a busy man this summer and is looking to bring Norwich City’s Emi Buendia to Villa Park, recently bidding £30million for the playmaker.

Villa’s chances of signing Buendia are boosted by the recent comments of Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber.

He seemed to place a £30million price tag on the 24-year-old’s head earlier this week, saying: “If we do sell, it’s going to be a club-record deal.

“It’s probably going to start with a number three in front of it and that will give us great opportunities to maybe make the whole squad better as well. We’re really relaxed on that front.”

Buendia registered 15 goals and 17 assists in 39 games last season, and would be a great partner for Jack Grealish in attacking midfield.

Smith is also wary of Villa’s reduced creativity when Grealish is injured, so it’s hoped Buendia can lessen their reliance on their skipper going forward.
