Report reveals the final four candidates for the Spurs job

A report claims there are now four candidates left in the running to succeed Jose Mourinho at Premier League side Spurs.

Ryan Mason took over from Mourinho on an interim basis towards the end of April after the Portuguese was sacked for a number of poor performances.

Tottenham, who lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on Wednesday, have been linked with numerous managers as chairman Daniel Levy takes his time over appointing a new coach.

Spurs greet fans with a slap in the face and a kick in the teeth

The likes of Brendan Rodgers, Nuno Espirito Santo and Julian Nagelsmann have all been linked with the latter agreeing to take over as Bayern Munich manager.

And now Jack Pitt-Brooke in The Athletic claims that there are now ‘four candidates in the running’ for the job in north London, naming Erik ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick, Roberto Martinez and Graham Potter as the contenders.

Pitt-Brooke does admit that ‘other candidates could emerge’ but outlines in the report that these are the four most likely to be tasked with ‘trying to reverse a slow slide’.

Ajax boss Ten Hag is described as a ‘leading contender’ – despite recently renewing his contract in the Netherlands – and ‘he would likely give Tottenham a return to the attacking style of play that they crave’.

The report suggests that former RB Leipzig boss Rangnick ‘might be a better man for a long-term cultural reset rather than for a dressing room that has established players in it’.

Pitt-Brooke reckons Belgium head coach Martinez ‘might be a safer bet than the other names on the list’ but Levy is aware that the appointment could upset the fans.

Finally, Brighton boss Potter is understood to be the ‘outsider’ of the four candidates with his lack of ‘elite-level experience’ potentially costing him.

Meanwhile, another cloud hanging over Spurs at the moment is the future of star striker Harry Kane, with reports earlier in the week claiming the England international had asked to leave the club.

Tottenham are understood to be unhappy with the timing of the leak from Kane’s camp, but Ryan Mason said on Wednesday night that it’s just part of football.

“It is just the reality of football,” Mason said. “We all know that. There’s always speculation and there are always comments. That’s normal.

“As players and coaches we can’t be affected by stuff we read or see because it happens all the time.

“We’re professionals, we’re paid to work, we’re paid to be ready for football matches. That’s what we’ll do. That’s what we are doing.

“No, my focus hasn’t deviated. I’ve been committed. I feel like we have helped the team, helped the group. It’s part of football. I experienced it as player.”

Man City star Ruben Dias named FWA Footballer of the Year

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has been voted the Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year.

Portugal international Dias, 24, was a comfortable winner ahead of Tottenham forward Harry Kane and his City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne.

Dias has enjoyed an outstanding first campaign at the Etihad Stadium since a club record £64.3million transfer from Benfica last September.

He has helped Pep Guardiola’s squad win the Carabao Cup once more, regain their Premier League title and also reach the Champions League final, where they will face Chelsea in Porto on May 29.

A total of nine City players received individual votes from the FWA membership, which accounted for more than 50 per cent of the overall ballot.

After accepting the award, Dias paid tribute to all his colleagues at the club.

“It is a huge privilege. Obviously I could not have done it without the success of the team,” Dias said in an interview with the FWA.

“I think me receiving this prize is the major example of how our team works, the way we build our game.

“It reflects all the togetherness we have on the pitch, how we perform and the spirit that is in the team and with these players.

“Thank you to all my colleagues, the (Man City) staff, the physios, the kit men, the guys in the kitchen, that all bring a smile every day to the training ground to make us feel good, to make us feel ready, to make us feel the best way they can.

“All those details make a difference at the end.”

Despite City’s outstanding campaign, Dias is already focusing on the next challenge.

“I heard someone from the club say: ‘we live in the middle of the storm’. Sometimes we don’t even have time to celebrate, to think too much about things, we just move on,” he said.

“We must not shut it off, we just let it go, because at the end of it all, it is beautiful what is happening.

“But next year it will be a new challenge, a new season – and as a footballer you just need to be hungry every time.”

Dias is only the third player to win the FWA award in his first season in English football.

The last defender to collect the trophy, which has been presented since 1948, was Liverpool’s Steve Nicol 32 years ago.

FWA chair Carrie Brown said: “Ruben Dias turned heads soon after his arrival in Manchester, belying his age with fortitude, steel, a relentless drive for perfection and an almost superhuman ability to read and anticipate phases of play.

“Pep Guardiola improves players, shapes them – but at no point has a new signing arrived into one of Pep’s already trophy-laden teams and exerted such influence.

“Ruben Dias is our Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year for his leadership on and off the pitch as much as for the infectious joy he derives from executing the art of defending to perfection.”

Gerrard becomes seventh PL Hall of Fame inductee

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has become the seventh player to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The now Rangers boss won seven major trophies for Liverpool, including the Champions League, in a 17-year career at Anfield.

Gerrard is the first inductee not to have won the Premier League having joined Dennis Bergkamp, Frank Lampard, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry on the list.

He made 710 appearances for the Reds and captained the side to one of the most memorable Champions League final victories of all time, scoring their first goal as they recovered from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan in Istanbul.

He also won two FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Cup in his time at Anfield.

Gerrard has joined former England teammate Lampard, who was honoured on Wednesday.

On his induction into the Hall of Fame, Lampard said: “As a young lad I remember just wanting to make it into the West Ham team, and looking up to players like Roy Keane, Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry so to be mentioned in the same bracket as them is a real honour.

“I am very proud and thankful for the recognition. The key for me was practice and hard work. I had a talent for arriving and scoring goals. I had done it in all the teams that I played for but to score consistently over that period in the Premier League was mostly down to my hard work and dedication to constantly improve.”

Bergkamp was also added on Wednesday, after Manchester United duo Keane and Cantona had joined inaugural inductees Henry and Shearer earlier in the week.

They have been selected from a 23-man shortlist based on the most combined votes from the public and a Premier League panel.

Here’s the full 23-man shortlist:

Tony Adams, David Beckham, Dennis Bergkamp, Sol Campbell, Eric Cantona, Andrew Cole, Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba, Les Ferdinand, Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard, Roy Keane, Frank Lampard, Matt le Tissier, Michael Owen, Peter Schmeichel, Paul Scholes, John Terry, Robin van Persie, Nemanja Vidic, Patrick Viera, Ian Wright.

Euro 2020: Billy Gilmour among three uncapped Scots

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has opted to put his faith in youth after naming the uncapped trio of Billy Gilmour, Nathan Patterson and David Turnbull in his squad for this summer’s European Championship.

Nineteen-year-olds Gilmour and Patterson and PFA Scotland young player of the year Turnbull, 21, have made the cut after being named in Clarke’s 26-man provisional squad.

Scotland are heading to their first major tournament in 23 years next month and will host the Czech Republic and Croatia at Hampden either side of a trip to Wembley to face the Auld Enemy England.

Chelsea midfielder Gilmour has emerged as a star of the future after moving to Stamford Bridge from Rangers, featuring in a number of high-profile Premier League and European clashes.

Clarke had until now resisted the urge to hand the deep-lying playmaker a senior call-up but the Scotland Under-21 player will now get his chance to prove he can make his mark on the international stage.

Patterson is another highly-rated teen talent, with his Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard even claiming the defender was one of the nation’s “brightest prospects ever in terms of right-back”.

With just 16 appearances to his name, it was feared a four-game ban he received for breaching lockdown rules earlier this year would count him out but Clarke has decided to forgive and forget that indiscretion.

Celtic ace Turnbull has also impressed in his first year at Parkhead. In a season of darkness and despair for Hoops supporters, the former Motherwell midfielder has been the one shining light, contributing 10 goals and eight assists.

There has been some consternation among Scotland fans at the inclusion of Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck ahead of Ryan Gauld, who has scored nine goals for Farense in the Portuguese league this season.

The inclusion of Gilmour will please Charlie Adam, who said this week:  “I’m a big admirer. I’ve been pushing for him for a number of months now. He’s a player who looks after the football, manipulates it well, passes it forward.

“He does that holding role really well for Chelsea. I’d like to see him in there. We can’t afford to just bring along players for experience, they need to be good enough. He’s certainly good enough.”

Saint-Maximin gives honest opinion on Newcastle future

Amid reported interest from Serie A club Roma, Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin has been speaking about his future at the Magpies.

Saint-Maximin has been on top form since returning from injury and illness, helping Newcastle to safety in the Premier League under Steve Bruce.

The Frenchman’s current deal in the northeast runs until 2026, but he has insisted that he will not settle for simply fighting relegation every season.

NEWS: Lampard becomes fifth Premier League Hall of fame inductee

Speaking on life at Newcastle, Saint-Maximin told Sky Sports: “The club has given me everything, the opportunity for me to show to everyone my quality in the Premier League.

“They gave me the opportunity to feel really comfortable in Newcastle.

“I feel really good with everyone – players, the coach, the fans.

“When they asked me about a new deal, I feel that I have to give.”

However, this might not be enough for the Frenchman to see out his current contract at the club, adding: “Sometimes when people give you something, you have to give back.

“But before I signed it, I had always said Newcastle should not be fighting against relegation every year.

“We have to fight for the top 10, it’s what the supporters deserve.

“Sometimes you have to think about your future, you can see Leicester winning the FA Cup, you play football to win trophies, not to fight to stay up.”

For the club to push on and avoid being in another relegation battle, ‘ASM’ believes that signing players like Joe Willock, currently on loan from Arsenal, is the right way to go.

He said: “We have to buy more players like Joe, he can be really great for the team and for myself.

“My relationship is really good with Joe inside and outside the pitch, and you can see how that helps a team when you have players like that.”

Saint-Maximin has gained many plaudits for his charity work in Newcastle. On Tuesday he was rewarded with the PFA Community Champion award for 2020/21.

The 24-year-old has frequently visited the Newcastle West End Foodbank during his time in Tyneside, donating shirts and spending time with families.

Additionally, the winger has donated packs including gift cards and chocolates to local NHS hospital staff in the area, as a mark of appreciation for their work during the coronavirus pandemic.

Shaw vows to help prevent Man Utd fan ban for scarf throw

Luke Shaw has promised to help a Manchester United fan who claims he faces a three-year ban from Old Trafford for throwing a scarf towards the full-back.

United were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham on Tuesday night in their first match in front of supporters for more than a year.

Red Devils fan Shaun Logan wrote on Twitter that he hurled his scarf in a “peaceful gesture” during the match.

Logan added that he is travelling to Gdansk for next week’s Europa League final against Villarreal and fears the game could be “the end of the road”.

He wrote: “(The scarf) was thrown to Luke in a good manner. Nothing aggressive. Was told by the stewards I’m facing a three-year ban.

“All paid up for Gdansk next week and this looks like it could be the end of the road for me. Was a peaceful gesture that was taken out of context. Luke Shaw laughed.”

England international Shaw later vowed to try to ensure the supporter does not face any punishment.

He tweeted: “I understand completely, first match back at Old Trafford, emotions are high.

“I know there was nothing aggressive towards what you did. I will try my best to speak with someone and sort it out.”

Shaw joined Bruno Fernandes in being honoured at the Manchester United awards on Tuesday.

Fernandes won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the second year in a row, having notched 28 goals and 17 assists in 56 appearances this season.

He won two Player of the Month awards and 12 Man of the Match accolades along the way.

He joins David de Gea, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Roy Keane and Eric Cantona as multiple winners of the award having won 63% of the fan vote.

Fernandes also claimed the award for United’s Goal of the Season, for his strike against Everton back in February.

But it wasn’t a clean sweep for the Portuguese star at the award ceremony, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad snubbing him as they voted for their Players’ Player of the Year on favour of Shaw.

The left-back has been in outstanding form all season, forcing his way back into England contention through is quality both defensively and on the front foot.
