Spurs set to appoint new boss ‘next week’ as search narrows

Premier League side Spurs are set to unveil their new manager next week if all goes to plan, according to reports.

Ryan Mason has been at the helm following Jose Mourinho’s sacking last month but will return to his academy role after Sunday’s Premier League curtain-closer at Leicester, where European football is on the line.

Tottenham’s search for a new boss continues with the club linked with numerous names, including Nuno Espirito Santo, with Wolves announcing yesterday that he would be leaving at the end of the season.

Time to reassess Arteta? Kane ‘would be a disaster’ at Real and…

Brendan Rodgers had been one of their main targets but they recently gave up on him after ruling himself out of the running for the job.

While a report in The Athletic on Thursday claimed that Spurs had whittled their candidates down to four with Erik ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick and Roberto Martinez the main contenders, with Brighton boss Graham Potter seen as an outsider for the role.

And now Football Insider reckons Tottenham are ‘expected to be in a position to announce their new manager soon after Sunday’s Premier League finale’.

Spurs chairman Levy and the board ‘have been presented with a three-man shortlist after various contenders were whittled down or struck off’ and are ‘confident of appointing a new manager next week’.

The report has ruled out Wolves boss Nuno as a possible candidate at Spurs after the club searched ‘both overseas and domestically for a more readily-available domestic manager.’

Meanwhile, interim boss Mason admits he would one day be happy to return to the position on a permanent basis as he prepares for his final game in charge against Leicester City.

“My personal ambitions I have to put aside at this moment. I don’t really want to think about what I want or need,” Mason said.

“I have loved representing this football club, to be given this opportunity at this age has been amazing. Would I have said no to this football club? No.

“There is always stuff to learn from. I would never say never in football, things happen you don’t expect.

“The most important thing that I have always said is, ‘What’s best for the football club’. And if the club thinks that’s best in 10, 15, 20 years time then of course, if that’s what the club feels is best.

“But the football club is the most important thing and what do we want and what do we need and what is best for us.”

Bruce aiming to finish difficult season on a high against Fulham

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has warned his side to avoid being caught by a sucker punch on the final day of the season, as his side travel to relegated Fulham.

Bruce’s side have had it tough this season, going through a spell of two wins in 19 league matches which put the northeast club right in the thick of a relegation scrap.

However, with Sunday’s fixture looking at one point like a final-day relegation showdown, 13 points out of their last 21 has ensured that Newcastle will be able to travel to Craven Cottage in comfort.

NEWS: Moyes ‘hopeful’ that West Ham can keep Lingard

However, Bruce is not expecting the Fulham match to be an easy one: “Look at Sheffield United being relegated and all of a sudden before they came to us, they’d won two out of four where they hadn’t won two for six months. The pressure’s off, go and enjoy it.

“We saw Brighton the other day go and beat the champions, we’ve seen Southampton put their best run together in the last month or so. It’s part and parcel of it.

“But I’ll do my utmost to make sure that we try our best to get on to 45 points and keep the season going just one more time. Then it would be a really, really smashing end to the season that we’ve just had.

“Just recently, just when we needed it, when we’d really come under the pump, we’ve produced form which has put us into the top six or seven on current form, which is terrific for the team. I’m delighted with the way they’ve responded.”

The Magpies have Arsenal loanee Joe Willock to thank for their change in fortunes, having scored in six consecutive league appearances.

However, Bruce believes that the midfielder has done “too well” at Newcastle, making it difficult for the loan to become permanent.

Despite a testing campaign at St James’ Park, Bruce is planning for the future, discussing his plans in the upcoming transfer window.

He said: “I think we need at least three or four. But for me now, it’s adding that bit of quality to the squad.

“It’s a really, really difficult competition we’re in, but certainly if we added three or four players to the current squad we’ve got – and adding that bit of quality is the most important thing for me.”

Terry says he would ‘never’ manage Tottenham

John Terry has said that his “end goal” is to manage Chelsea, and admits that he would “never” take the Tottenham job.

Currently assistant to Dean Smith at Aston Villa, the former Blues defender has been a great success at Villa Park, helping Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa become one of the best defensive partnerships in the Premier League.

Terry has also admitted to declining two job offers from “decent-sized clubs” as he continues to focus on life at Villa.

NEWS: Tottenham will ‘fall apart’ without Kane, says former player

Speaking to The Times, Terry discussed his future aspirations in the game: “My ambition is very, very clear,” he said.

“There’s an end goal for me and that’s managing Chelsea Football Club. My team will be winning — hopefully — very honest, very organised, very well drilled, very well prepared and with a back four.

“I look at Lamps [Frank Lampard] and Stevie [Gerrard] and the success they’ve both had. Lamps in his first season at Chelsea, and what Stevie’s done up at Rangers is unbelievable.

“l probably wasn’t ready to go into coaching then. I am now. But I’m not just going to jump into anything. I’ve turned down two jobs since I’ve been here.

“Decent-sized clubs. But it’s going to take something special for me to leave here. I’ve got one more year left at Villa. I’m in a privileged position because I’m in no rush. I want to be a No 1 but I’ll get there at some point.”

Spurs are currently in the hunt for a new manager, but it is safe to say that Terry is not the man for the job, saying he would “Never take it,” adding: “Never. Spurs is the only one I wouldn’t take. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be welcome at West Ham too.”

This means that Terry will not follow suit with his former boss Jose Mourinho, who was recently sacked by Spurs after two separate spells at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea host Terry and Villa on Sunday as the Premier League season draws to a close.

The Blues are sitting pretty in third after a massive win against Leicester on Tuesday night, and with Villa locked in 11th place with nothing to play for, Thomas Tuchel will be hoping for a comprehensive victory to secure Champions League football next season.

Tottenham will ‘fall apart’ without Kane, says former player

Tottenham Hotspur will “fall apart” if Daniel Levy allows Harry Kane to leave the club this summer, according to Jermaine Jenas.

Since breaking into Spurs’ first-team, Kane has consistently been their most important player and top goalscorer.

The forward has 220 goals and 46 assists for the Londoners from his 335 outings across all competitions.

Kane campaign continues as Spurs make £70m Rodgers U-turn

Kane has adapted his game this season as he has added more assists to his game. This term he has 22 goals and 13 assists in the Premier League.

The Englishman has openly stated that he wants to win trophies. He has told Tottenham that he wants to leave this summer.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are all interested in him. If he does leave, he is expected to cost in excess of £150m as he still has three years remaining on his contract.

Jenas has told BBC Sport that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has got “a lot of problems” to deal with:

“Levy has got to prove to Kane that what is coming in with regards to the manager, style of play and players over the next two seasons is going to be a team built to win something.

“And when I say win something, I don’t think a League Cup cuts it with Harry Kane. We are not talking that any more. We are talking a team that can challenge for the title and a team that can be in the Champions League competing in the latter stages on a regular basis.

“If he sells Harry Kane – the stock of the football club, the look of the football club, they’ve lost the England captain, they’ve got no manager, they’ve got disgruntled players – what happens then to Son Heung-Min and a core group of players that have been successful at the football club? The whole thing falls apart and who holds that together?

“So Levy has got a lot of problems on his plate. On top of that he is trying to attract a manager. To attract a top manager you want one of the best strikers in the world.”

This morning, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was christened in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle at an intimate service officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment. Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie. Their son, Archie, was baptised wearing the handmade replica of the royal christening gown which has been worn by royal infants for the last 11 years. The original Royal Christening Robe, made of fine Honiton lace lined with white satin, was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841 and first worn by her eldest daughter. It was subsequently worn for generations of Royal christenings, including The Queen, her children and her grandchildren until 2004, when The Queen commissioned this handmade replica, in order for the fragile historic outfit to be preserved, and for the tradition to continue. Mathias Pogba tells his brother to leave Man Utd for Barcelona

Mathias Pogba hopes his brother Paul leaves Man Utd in the summer transfer window to move to Spanish giants Barcelona.

Pogba was linked with a move to Barcelona a couple of years ago when he was unsettled at Old Trafford with his brother Matias claiming at the time that the France international had spoken to Lionel Messi.

The 28-year-old has impressed in the main this season with the former Juventus man helping the Red Devils to a runners-up spot in the Premier League and a Europa League final.

Gossip: Man Utd to outbid Liverpool, Ajax for striker; Reds raid Juve

Pogba’s current deal expires in 2022 and, until recently, it looked as though he would be on his way out of club this summer, with Man Utd eager to recoup some, if not all of the £89million they forked out for him in 2016.

His impressive recent form has changed the dynamic, however. Man Utd are now thought to be pursuing a contract extension for the Frenchman – with his agent Mino Raiola demanding £500,000 a week.

The Red Devils play Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday and Pogba’s brother claims the midfielder will consider his future after the match.

“Once he (Paul) wins the Europa League, then we will talk (about his future),” Mathias told Spanish TV show El Chiringuito.

Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona have all been linked with Pogba at various times in the last couple of seasons and Mathias – who is currently playing in Slovenia for NK Tabor Sezana – hopes his brother chooses Barcelona.

He added: “I don’t know anything but I’m with you, I would sign tomorrow if that was the question. Hopefully he will sign for Barca.”

Pogba recently declared himself a “bad loser” and insisted that Man Utd have to win a trophy this season.

“Personally I miss it a lot and feel like I miss something,” Pogba told Sky Sports. “We have to win something. I just want to win something; I don’t like to play and not win.

“I’m a bad loser, I will always be a bad loser, so every time I play, I want to win. Personally, we want it very bad. I think we are getting closer and closer – there is improvement I would say.

“When I say improvement, this club has such big goals and objectives we want to achieve and that is to win and to have a trophy to hold. That is what we want and that will be the big step.

“I’m happy, we’re there, we’re close. We’re still in the Europa League, we still have something to play for.

“We have the league still, as long as (Manchester) City don’t have the trophy, we’re going to keep working and playing. We still have a chance to win something this year so, why not?”
