Sheffield Wednesday are among clubs to have asked for clarification over whether players could be put on furlough, according to reports.

The Owls were relegated after finishing bottom of the Sky Bet Championship table, having drawn 3-3 with Derby on the final day of the season.

The PA news agency understands the issue of whether clubs could make use of the Government’s coronavirus job retention scheme was raised at an EFL meeting.

Any club requesting further clarification were directed to the latest information from HMRC, which was updated on March 3, with the furlough scheme having been extended until the end of September.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Sheffield Wednesday players, who already faced payment delays, have rejected proposals from the club for some of the squad to be placed on furlough.

When contacted by PA on Saturday morning, Wednesday did not comment on whether they had been one of the clubs looking to make use of the scheme.

In November, Wednesday’s 12-point deduction for breachin; thg financial regulations was reduced to six points on appeal.

Following relegation to Sky Bet League One, the Owls confirmed goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, defender Tom Lees, midfielder Adam Reach and experienced forward Jordan Rhodes were among 10 players released.

Wednesday at least have reasons to be cheerful with Darren Moore in charge.

According to Spanish source ABC (via Express), Los Blancos now ‘intend to sell’ him after bringing in David Alaba.

The Austrian star joined on a free transfer after leaving German champions Bayern Munich.

His arrival means Real will consider offers for Varane in the coming months, giving Man Utd a major boost in their transfer pursuit.

The Red Devils are hoping to land Varane with a £60million bid. Club officials view him as the perfect man to take them to the next level and challenge Man City for the 2021/22 Premier League title.

Varane was asked about a summer transfer while on international duty with France. The 28-year-old said: “This is not the time to talk about my future. I am focused on the selection, on this Euro.

“We are all human beings. We can think about it. As for my personal case, I am focused on the objectives that we have in the France team, it is not a subject that I will discuss every day in my room at Clairefontaine.”

Man Utd were originally linked with moves for RB Leipzig defenders Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate.

Upamecano was snapped up by Bayern after they activated his £37million release clause. Konate, meanwhile, has joined Liverpool in a £36million deal to ease their defensive woes.

If Man Utd’s move for Varane falls through then they may pursue Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. The 22-year-old is Varane’s France team-mate, who recently put clubs on ‘red alert’ by saying he would consider a Sevilla exit.

A new centre-back looks likely to be the first signing for Man Utd this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Kounde has put United and Arsenal on red alert with his latest transfer admission.

When asked about his future at a press conference, the defender said: “I may have to change clubs this summer. I have not decided anything.

“My goal is, one day, to evolve into a great club to always try to progress, win trophies. To be able to start the season each year by telling yourself that the goal is win a particular trophy.

“I might have to move, but that’s not relevant today.”

Kounde is among the top centre-backs in Spain and is valued by Sevilla at £68million.

Speaking about his status as a major prospect, Kounde continued: “I would say that perhaps when I arrived at Sevilla and started playing more and more, also with the arrival of the Champions League.

“It has always been something in my head. I have always believed in it, I have always worked for it. To have it.

“That objective in the sights meant that I was able to have the performances I did at Sevilla. Also thanks to this club that helped me a lot and my team-mates who always pushed me.”

It’s thought that United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Kounde to partner Harry Maguire in defence.

The pair could make a solid defensive duo in 2021/22, if United can get a deal over the line this summer.

If not, then the Red Devils may pursue either Raphael Varane or Pau Torres.

Arsenal have also been linked with Kounde’s signature. Mikel Arteta will benefit from the return of William Saliba next season, following the end of his loan spell with Nice.

But it seems the manager wants to improve his defence further by submitting a major bid for Kounde.

Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate for £36million.

The Reds triggered the defender’s release clause earlier today, with the transfer set to go through on July 1.

Liverpool had been looking for a new central defender following injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

Even Fabinho, who deputised in the position this season, picked up an injury in January.

Konate will improve Jurgen Klopp’s options hugely and at just 22, is a great player for the future.

Speaking about his move, the Frenchman said: “I’m really happy to be joining such a massive club like Liverpool.

“It’s a really exciting moment for me and my family and I am really looking forward to meeting my new teammates, the staff and getting started on this new chapter.

Konate has formed a solid partnership with Dayot Upamecano at RB Leipzig in recent seasons. Upamecano was originally targeted by Liverpool and Manchester United before his move to Bayern Munich was announced in February.

Konate started his career with FC Sochaux before joining Leipzig on a free transfer in 2017. Like so many other players, the German outfit helped to make him a star in the Bundesliga from a young age.

His season has been interrupted by injuries, although he still managed to make 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal.

Dani Ceballos says he has been “lucky” to be able to play in the Premier League with Arsenal but insists he doesn’t want to go “on loan to any club again”.

The Spain midfielder has spent the last two seasons at the Emirates Stadium, making 49 Premier League appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Ceballos, 24, had found first-team opportunities limited at Real Madrid before joining the Gunners in 2019 on a season-long loan – a move that was then replicated for the current campaign.

The Spaniard confirmed his Arsenal exit on Monday by sending a goodbye message to fans on social media.

On his time in the Premier League with Arsenal, Ceballos told Canal Sur Radio (via Marca): “The Premier League is a very attractive league, I was lucky to be able to play it last season and win the FA Cup, and this second season has helped me to consolidate myself.

“I am very happy because I have learned a lot, I have become a better player, more complete, and I think that although my stage has not closed as we would have liked, with another title, I am very happy with the experience.

“It is true that I have a contract with Real Madrid for the next two years and I would not like to go on loan to any club again. With the experience of the last two years, I am a player who needs to feel important, I would like next year starting from the beginning and feeling important, but settling down. So, it’s important going forward to know what you want to do.

“I think that the player achieves his maximum level when he is completely happy and for that he has to be 100% focused on his club.

“I am 24 years old, I am a very young player, with a lot of future still ahead of me, and the truth is that my expectations are clear: to settle in a club, feel important and enjoy football.”

With Zinedine Zidane leaving Real Madrid this week, Ceballos is unsure where he stands, he added: “It is true that with Zizou I had fewer opportunities than I had thought, but now Madrid is without a coach.

“We do not know what will happen in two or three weeks, there is talk of many things and I think that right now is time to disconnect a bit from football, prepare well for what is coming and when Madrid have their next coach, let’s talk and see what we want, it will be time to decide the future.”

On whether he could return to Real Betis, Ceballos continued: “Betis has a very good squad, I don’t know what Pellegrini and Cordón are planning for next year.

“It’s still early and I have to focus on my next goal, which is to play the Olympics now. From there, decide my future.”
