‘Big Six deserve big fines – £100m each should do it’

Robbie Savage believes good can still come out of the doomed Super League project – if the clubs involved are hit with hefty financial penalties.

Calls for sanctions against the six Premier League clubs involved are growing, with points deductions and expulsion from competitions mooted.

However, former Leicester City midfielder turned pundit Savage insists only by hitting the clubs’ billionaire owners in the pocket will the punishment fit the crime.

F365 SAYS: Bin the billionaire boys club – now is the time for 50+1…

And he called for the money generated to be invested lower down the pyramid to ensure the survival of clubs hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Writing in the Daily Mirror, he said: “Eye-watering fines, which could be reinvested in our national game’s infrastructure, would ensure some good comes out of a turbulent episode.

“If they coughed up, say, £100 million each, that would be £600m towards saving the pyramid.

“And if you think £100m is too steep, let’s not make the mistake of delivering a slap on the wrist or pretending oligarchs, sheiks and multi-billionaire businessmen can’t afford it.

“That money would replenish areas of the game hardest-hit by the pandemic crisis, whether that’s 3G pitches at grass roots level or saving clubs on the brink of financial ruin. Parts of the game a Super League might have left to wither and die.

“Dozens of communities would benefit, and smaller clubs who face extinction because of the COVID shutdown could be reprieved.

“Clubs and leagues below the Premier League have rightly complained in the past that not enough of the game’s income filters down the pyramid. Here is an opportunity partly to redress the balance.”

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has demanded the Premier League deduct points from the six plotters, while expulsion from the FA Cup is another measure being considered.

However, Savage rejected both, saying they went against the spirit of what the non-Big Six were fighting for. And would end up financially penalising the clubs who weren’t involved in the proposed breakaway.

“Competition, and the integrity of leagues based on merit, was the very thing everyone was seeking to protect from an elite closed shop where there was no promotion or relegation, he said.

“And why expel clubs like Manchester United from competitions where they are the biggest draw?

“That will only hurt clubs outside the Big Six, who currently generate an estimated 30 per cent of game’s turnover between them.”

Arteta shifts blame away from Leno and onto VAR decisions

Mikel Arteta has shifted blame away from keeper Bernd Leno following Arsenal’s 1-0 home defeat to Everton.

The German shot-stopper scored an own goal as the Gunners’ terrible week continued.

They rescued a 1-1 draw against Fulham last time out and were involved in the controversial Super League plans this week.

FEATURE: Five reasons to welcome the British Super League

Arteta will have been hoping for a return to form on the pitch to silence their critics and appease their protesting fans.

But that wasn’t the case as they delivered a toothless performance at the Emirates.

They seemed to be given a penalty in the second half when Richarlison felled Dani Ceballos in the box. The penalty was then overturned by VAR for an offside in the build-up.

Everton were gifted the only goal of the game in the 76th-minute. Richarlison got past Granit Xhaka before sending a cross towards Leno, who misjudged the ball and let it go past him.

Reacting to the defeat, Arteta said: “Performance-wise we were the better team, we controlled the game and we had some opportunities and openings. We had a clear penalty that was disallowed somehow and then we score an own goal.

“The penalty is clear, those decisions have been made after, I don’t know how or who by, we cannot see their faces to explain it. It’s the second time in two weeks.

“I can see the images 20 times and I don’t get it.

“Errors are part of football, we conceeded an own goal that defined the game at the end. We didn’t create enough against a team that is well organised, we lacked clarity in the final third.”

Arsenal’s next game will be massive for their season. They take on Villareal in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie.

Arteta added: “We need to go through the disappointment and focus our energy, the semi-final is more than crucial for us. I don’t want to use any excuses.”

The Spaniard also said he ‘understands the protests’ against owner Stan Kroenke before kick-off.

Konate agrees personal terms with Liverpool ahead of €35m move

Ibrahima Konate has agreed a five-year contract with Liverpool ahead of his €35million move, according to sources.

The Reds have wanted Konate for months to solve their defensive problems.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have all spent time on the sidelines this season.

OPINION: Should Man Utd rival Bayern and Spurs for Nagelsmann?

Liverpool were originally in the race for Dayot Upamecano, alongside Manchester United. They were beaten to the signing by Bayern Munich and have since pursued his RB Leipzig team-mate Konate.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Konate’s move to Liverpool is set to be completed in the coming days.

The parties have agreed personal terms, with the centre-back signing a five-year contract at Anfield.

Liverpool will soon activate Konate’s €35million release clause at Leipzig.

The news means he will become their first signing of the summer.

Konate is expected to compete with Gomez and Matip for a place in the starting lineup.

If he impresses manager Jurgen Klopp, then he will start alongside van Dijk on the Dutchman’s return from injury.

The Reds signed Turkish defender Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke in January.

He’s made eight Premier League appearances since then and they have the option of signing him permanently for £18million.

However, the acquisition of Konate means Kabak’s spell at Anfield could be a short one.

The Frenchman is one of the most exciting defensive prospects in Europe.

He’s formed a solid partnership with Upamecano at the back, helping Leipzig to reach third in the Bundesliga last campaign.

The 21-year-old moved to Germany in 2017 on a free transfer from FC Sochaux. He followed the Leipzig trend by breaking into the first-team and catching the eye of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Like Upamecano, Konate has been scouted by United and Bayern officials.

It looks like he’s impressed Liverpool scouts and has convinced them into spending big.

Konate is unlikely to be the only Liverpool signing in the upcoming transfer window.

The Reds have been linked with Leeds winger Raphinha, who looks like a perfect fit at Anfield.

Another target is Ajax midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. His ability and potential makes him a perfect long-term replacement for Gini Wijnaldum.

Wembley to stage Dublin’s Euro 2020 last-16 match on June 29

Wembley will take on Dublin’s Euro 2020 last-16 match on June 29, UEFA has announced.

It means England could play their first four matches of the finals at Wembley if they win Group D, before potentially moving to Rome for the quarter-finals.

The semi-finals and final are also due to be played at the London venue.

MEDIAWATCH: Manchester United ‘mob’ should just buy Glazers out themselves

Dublin’s group matches have been reassigned to St Petersburg.

The Irish capital has been unable to provide minimum capacity assurances to UEFA and has been stripped of hosting rights.

Bilbao’s four matches have been switched to Seville while Munich has now provided guarantees that at least 14,500 will be able to attend the four matches it is hosting, including a quarter-final on July 2.

The decision means Wembley will now host eight matches – three group games, two last 16 ties, the semis and the final. St Petersburg now has seven matches.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: “We have been working diligently with the host associations and local authorities to ensure a safe and festive environment at the games and I am really pleased that we are able to welcome spectators at all matches for a celebration of national team football across the continent.”

Ceferin added: “UEFA wishes to express its appreciation and gratitude to the cities of Bilbao and Dublin – both of which are considered as good venues to host future UEFA events – the national and regional governments of Spain and the Republic of Ireland, and all local stakeholders for their dedication, professionalism and efforts over the past years.

“UEFA would also like to thank the Football Association of Ireland and its dedicated staff for their excellent collaboration and hard work, and is looking forward to continuing to work with the remaining 11 host associations in delivering EURO 2020 matches.”

UEFA said tickets for matches in Bilbao and Dublin would be cancelled and refunded, and those ticket buyers will receive priority access to tickets in the reassigned venues.

UEFA said the Andalusian regional authorities had told it the venue in Seville – La Cartuja stadium – would be at 30 per cent capacity.

St Petersburg has previously confirmed a minimum capacity of 50 per cent for its Krestovsky Stadium, and could be in a position to increase that by the end of the month.

The Football Association has targeted a capacity of 22,500 for its group games and last 16 ties, and is looking at 45,000 as a minimum for the semi-finals and final.

Ireland’s Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin said: “Preparations for the hosting of the EURO 2020 games in Dublin were at an advanced stage when the pandemic hit and UEFA took the decision on March 17, 2020 to postpone the tournament.

“Work on the tournament in Dublin continued into 2021 and we were hopeful that we were all set to host a fantastic tournament in Dublin in June.

“However, despite our commitment to hosting the games the public health situation has meant that we were not able to give UEFA the assurances they required earlier this month in relation to guaranteeing minimum spectator attendance levels at EURO 2020 in Dublin. I would like to take this opportunity to wish UEFA and all of the other host cities well with EURO 2020 and look forward to an exciting tournament in the summer.”

Football Association of Ireland chief executive Jonathan Hill added: “The Dublin LOS (local organising structure) partners have worked tirelessly together since the pandemic first struck last year to facilitate the staging of these games.

“The reality here is that circumstances beyond our control have led to the games being moved and we have to acknowledge that public health must come first in a global pandemic.

“This is the end of the EURO 2020 project but the dedication and professionalism of all involved makes everyone at the FAI more determined than ever to bring big games and big tournaments to our country and I am delighted that UEFA have recognised our endeavours by agreeing to work with us on big projects for Dublin and Ireland in the future including the staging of a UEFA club (competition) final at the Aviva Stadium after 2023 which is something to really look forward to as we enter our centenary year.”

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan welcomed an additional match coming to Wembley and said: “London is the sporting capital of the world, so of course when Dublin sadly had to withdraw as a venue for the Euros we stepped up.

“It’s fantastic that an additional knockout game will be played at Wembley this summer. Now let’s hope we top our group so it can be a home game for England.”

Aston Villa will be without Grealish for ninth successive PL match

Aston Villa will be without Jack Grealish for a ninth successive Premier League match when they host West Brom but Wesley could make his long-awaited return this weekend.

The Brazil striker has been out since rupturing knee ligaments against Burnley in September 2019 but last week he played just over an hour for the Under-23 side.

In his press conference ahead of Sunday’s derby clash with the Baggies, Villa head coach Dean Smith said he will monitor Wesley with a view to including the 24-year-old in his matchday squad.

MEDIAWATCH: Manchester United ‘mob’ should just buy Glazers out themselves

“We’re going to have a look at Wesley to see if he can be involved,” said Smith. “It’s been really tough. It’s as significant an injury as I’ve seen on a player, and it shows the strength of character for him to come back from it.

“During a pandemic, it’s been really tough as we haven’t been able to arrange the amount of games that we would normally get for someone recovering from an injury.

“We’ve had to improvise a little bit, but he’s certainly a willing lad and everyone will be pleased to see him back.”

As for Grealish, Villa’s captain remains sidelined with the shin problem that saw him withdrawn from training on February 18 on the eve of the home defeat to Leicester.

The 25-year-old watched the defeat to Manchester City from the stands at Villa Park in midweek and was spotted in conversation with England manager Gareth Southgate.

Smith revealed Grealish is set for another scan next week, saying: “There’s not really a timeline (on his injury) as such.

“He’s due to have a scan next week. Hopefully that clears it up and we go full board with training. We will be guided by the time and the medical practitioners.”

Villa will be looking to get back to winning ways against relegation-threatened West Brom on Sunday following back-to-back defeats against City and Liverpool, and three losses in their last four Premier League matches.

Smith’s side have seen their challenge for European football fade away in recent weeks after just two victories in the last 10 games.

“This is only our second season back (in the Premier League) and we are still building to become a force again. Consistency is the key for us, moving forward,” said the Villa boss.

“We had the two play-off semi-finals with West Brom where the atmosphere was electric, so the fans will be missed but we all know what is at stake.

“We need to win the game, they need to win the game. Games are running out and they need to win them, so we know they will be coming to Villa Park looking for a win that can help them survive.

“They’re fighting for every point they can get, but so are we. We know it’s a derby. We’re looking forward to the game and we want to get back to winning ways ourselves.”

Foden better than Gazza says former Tottenham man

Phil Foden is already better than Gazza and is going to be way better than David Silva.

That is the bold claim of talkSPORT pundit and former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara.

Manchester City midfielder Foden is expected to play a key role for England in this summer’s Euros.

MAILBOX: Now to bleed the Glazers dry and let Real, Barca do a Leeds…

The 20-year-old appears a certain starter for the Three Lions, having forced his way back into the reckoning following a COVID breach at the start of the season.

And O’Hara was quick to liken him to another England midfielder who courted controversy yet had a massive impact on the tournament the last time it was played on these shores.

“I know people always compare him to Paul Gascoigne, but I look at Foden and think he’s better than Gascoigne,” said O’Hara.

“He offers so much to the team. The way he carries the ball and runs through the pitch – and that’s what I loved about Gazza.

“He’s the go-to-guy. He’s the man when they need someone to step up in big moments then it’s Phil Foden. He just produces on the big stages and he’s done it all season.”

Foden has been gradually integrated into the City line-up under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, with the current campaign his most prolific in terms of appearances – and goal involvement.

The ‘Stockport Iniesta’ has never been afraid to set his sights high, though, revealing to The Athletic that he wanted to become a City legend.

He went some way to doing that with goals in both legs of the Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund, continuing a rich vein of form in Europe’s premier competition.

And, based on his current rate of development, O’Hara sees no reason why Foden can’t go on to join David Silva and Vincent Kompany in being immortalised outside the Etihad.

“We talk about David Silva, a Man City legend in terms of what he’s done, but he went to the club when he was established as a finished article,” said O’Hara.

“For me, Phil Foden is going to be way better than Silva at Man City.

“He’s doing it already against Real Madrid and he’s still only a kid.”

Woodgate: Spurs need to splash cash to keep Kane

Winning the Carabao Cup will not be enough to keep Harry Kane at Tottenham, according to former Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Woodgate cemented his place in Spurs folklore by securing the club’s last trophy courtesy of an extra-time winner against Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final.

Tottenham are aiming to repeat that Wembley glory on Sunday when they take on holders Manchester City in the same competition.

F365 SAYS: Ryan’s at the wheel as Spurs bask in the post-Jose glow

Despite a string of individual accolades, striker Kane has yet to win a major honour.

However, Woodgate believes ending Spurs’ 13-year trophy drought won’t be sufficient to prevent their star man eyeing a move elsewhere.

And he says only by committing to invest heavily on the playing side, will Spurs be able to convince Kane to remain at the club.

“They have to (start winning silverware) with the stadium they have built and with the players they have got,” said Woodgate, who is in charge of Championship side Bournemouth.

“They have got the best striker in England in Harry Kane so they need to start winning trophies for him. They’re a well-run football club but they need to start soon.”

Asked if breaking City’s three-year stranglehold on the cup would be enough to appease Kane, Woodgate replied: “I am not sure.

“They will need more investment for Harry Kane to stay, I’m sure of that.

“He’s been unbelievable again this season and scored so many goals and even evolved as a player by making so many assists.

“He’s an incredible talent so I would say Spurs need to invest to keep Harry Kane at the club.”

Woodgate can empathise with Kane’s trophy drought, with the 2008 League Cup win proving a career highlight for the retired centre-back.

“It’s the only trophy I won so it’s got to be one of my best moments as a player,” he said.

“It’s part of the club’s history now of being there and winning that last trophy for them. I am sure sooner or later they are going to win a trophy.

“But to give the Spurs fans that day – especially beating Chelsea – was something special for them and really something special for me.”

Arteta ready for more Arsenal fan backlash over Kroenke

Click:handmade dog figurine

Mikel Arteta wants to keep his Arsenal players focused on the task of facing Everton on Friday night despite a turbulent week off the pitch which saw the club backtrack on plans to join a breakaway European Super League and their supporters plan protests against the owners.

The Gunners host Arteta’s former club in the Premier League, looking to leapfrog the visitors and reach eighth place with a win.

But the fixture will be played out against a backdrop of one of the most tumultuous weeks in the recent history of football.

OPINION: Exposed Kroenke is now vulnerable to Arsenal fans

Arsenal, along with five other Premier League clubs, announced on Sunday evening their plans to be founder members of a new European Super League.

The response from supporters and the wider footballing world was almost completely negative to the extent that, by Tuesday evening, Arsenal – as well as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham – withdrew from the process.

Although Arsenal apologised to their supporters in a statement confirming they had quit the project, the wedge between fans and the club’s owners had already grown larger.

There are now protests planned against Stan Kroenke to take place outside the Emirates Stadium ahead of the Everton clash – with Arteta keen to keep the minds of his players on the task at hand.

“I will try to prepare the team in the best possible way so that isn’t the case,” he said when asked if he was worried the week’s events could prove a distraction.

“We know that we might have a situation outside the stadium because our fans want to express their feelings, and our job is to try to make the team as focused as possible to perform on the pitch.

“I am getting used to it, since I joined it has been a roller coaster and more things have happened in those 18 months than probably in the last 20 years.

“Dealing with it, trying to maintain the unity and commitment of everybody, trying to be clear and transparent with the news that we have, and trying to move on.

“It’s been a really challenging week for everybody in world football but we have to move forward.

“There are a lot of lessons we can take from it and we have to learn and probably reflect and put football in a better position.”

With Arsenal nine points off the top four and with a Europa Leaue semi-final against Villarreal on the horizon, Arteta admits winning their remaining seven league games may be the only route into Europe through the Premier League.

“I want to focus on Everton,” he added.

“We still have more than five days to prepare (for the first leg against Villarreal) and how we get on there will depend on how we do against Everton and that is the only focus today for the team.

“We need to win every game now in the Premier League to give us the best possible chance to be in Europe next season through that competition.”

Fergie lauds McTominay; reveals tears of Scottish joy

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed his tears of joy when Scotland qualified for the European Championship finals – and his optimism for their chances.

The former Scotland boss broke down with Ryan Christie during the Celtic midfielder’s emotional interview in the aftermath of the penalty shoot-out play-off win over Serbia.

Sir Alex, marking 50 days to go until the tournament, told Glasgow’s Euro 2020 team: “When Serbia scored in the last minute I thought ‘oh Christ Almighty, extra-time, no chance’. But they saw it through and dug their heels in.

F365 Says: Glazers out? No sign of shifting Man Utd’s scavengers

“But Davie Marshall’s save, and he didn’t even know whether they had qualified or not, and everyone is jumping on top of him.

“And then the Ryan Christie interview. Christ, I was crying when I saw him crying. It was fantastic. You talk about a boost to the country – it was fantastic.

“I’m sure half the country would have watched that night. We will always remember Davie Marshall’s reaction and Ryan Christie’s interview.

“These are special moments which encapsulate exactly what it meant to everyone. Ryan Christie was crying for Scotland, for every Scottish fan.

“So it resonates because of the love Scotland has for football. It was amazing, really amazing.”

Scotland host Czech Republic and Croatia at Hampden either side of a Wembley clash with England and Ferguson is encouraged by Steve Clarke’s progress with his team.

“The thing that impresses me about Steve is that he is unflappable,” the former Aberdeen and Manchester United manager said.

“It doesn’t matter whether the team is doing well or doing badly, his demeanour does not change. He is composed, he is calm, and I think that transmits to the team. There is no panic.

“They have been playing quite well. I think it’s the old story, the scoring of goals. Their performance level has been very good, I have been impressed.

“I look at the midfield players and I think they are as good as anyone, players playing in England. And (Kieran) Tierney has been fantastic at Arsenal, absolutely fantastic, (Andy) Robertson the last two years at Liverpool has been unbelievable.

“And (Scott) McTominay is now emerging as one of Man United’s big players. When you watch Man United pick a team for a big game, McTominay is in it. Good character, great trainer, I know a little bit about the boy.

“I signed him when he was seven or eight. He was actually a centre-forward as a kid. He has sprouted, a little bit like Darren (Fletcher) when he first came.

“McTominay is a similar type as Darren, long, lanky, good winner of the ball, good turn of pace going forward, great attitude to the game. It’s really rewarding for me to see a Scott coming through.

“And (John) McGinn coming through at Aston Villa has been fantastic. (Kenny) McLean at Norwich has had a great season.

“So I’m optimistic. The important thing about the home games is, I know it’s only 12,000 people, but 12,000 at Hampden when they get going is like 50,000 at Wembley. We can create the atmosphere all right.”

Ferguson’s former boys’ club, Govan-based Harmony Row, have received the first of 50 UEFA Euro 2020 Glasgow Club legacy packs to enhance grassroots facilities.

“Harmony Row are doing something to point kids in the right direction,” Ferguson said. “All boys’ clubs are being rewarded for their determination to do well for young people.

“I always think about how it’s changed for young kids growing up now to be footballers.

“In my time you played in the streets, the back courts, you played on uneven bits of ground, bits of brick coming out the ground. That made you players. Playing in the street till all hours, you can’t do that now.

“I was reading that Germany had something like four times the amount of astroturf pitches as Great Britain. There is always the incentive to do better for young people and how they are going to achieve their skills and talents.”

Telles ‘decides to leave’ Man Utd with Juventus interested

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles has ‘decided to leave’ Old Trafford, according to reports.

He joined the Red Devils for a £13.5million fee back in October but has seen his opportunities limited.

Telles’ arrival has coincided with the return to form of Luke Shaw, who has been impressive this season.

FEATURE: Ranking the Big Six’s humiliating SL climbdowns

That’s left Telles on the bench for large parts of the campaign and it now seems he wants out.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (via Express), Telles has decided he wants to leave Manchester in the summer.

The Brazilian international is fed up of deputising for Shaw and is hoping to make a big money move.

Telles, who has been capped twice by his country, is aiming to make it to next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

His current situation makes it less likely that he will start at the tournament ahead of Real Madrid legend Marcelo or Juventus’ Alex Sandro.

The report names Juventus as one potential destination. The Italian giants, coached by Andrea Pirlo, are looking for competition for Sandro in defence.

That opens up the possibility of a swap deal involving midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

United have been closely linked with Rabiot in recent months due to his great performances in Serie A.

He’s played 28 times, scoring two goals and has also featured in the Champions League.

United scouts view Rabiot as a potential midfield partner for Scott McTominay.

However, the deal hinges of United’s willingness to sell Telles. His value won’t have increased in the past few months and they won’t want to lose any money on him.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will want to keep Telles to see if he can improve his place in the squad.

Many players have left Old Trafford for Serie A in recent years.

Romelu Lukaku joined Inter Milan for an €80million fee in 2019 and has been brilliant. He is now wanted by Manchester City as a long-term replacement for the departing Sergio Aguero.

Alexis Sanchez and Ashley Young have also secured moves to Inter, who are now managed by former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

They look set to end Juventus’ domestic dominance this year as they have a 10 point lead at the top of the table.
