Poch insists Man City clash not a ‘personal battle’ with Pep

Mauricio Pochettino insists Paris St Germain’s Champions League semi-final against Manchester City is not a personal battle between him and Pep Guardiola.

The Argentinian also says his memorable victory over City in the competition with Tottenham two years ago will have no bearing on the contest.

French champions PSG, runners-up last season, host City in the first leg of their last-four tie on Wednesday.

Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference: “It’s not a personal battle, it’s not a personal game. It’s a battle between two very good teams.

“When you talk about Pep Guardiola you are talking about one of the best coaches in the world, if not the best. I admire Pep not only for the titles but the legacy that he is building in football.

“I love being involved in football and trying to learn, to compete and win, but it is a game between two big clubs. It’s not going to be an easy game for either side.”

Pochettino’s Spurs beat City in dramatic circumstances in the quarter-finals in 2019. City thought they had won the tie with a late goal in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, but it was ruled out by VAR and Spurs went through on away goals.

Pochettino said: “There is nothing you can take from two years ago. It was a completely different game, a different approach and different teams. Always we live in the moment and the reality is this is completely different.

“Manchester City today are different and I am in PSG, which is a completely different club to Tottenham.”

Forward Neymar says he will give his all to drive PSG to Champions League success following last year’s near-miss.

The Brazil international says winning the competition is far more important than any personal glory.

Neymar, a winner with Barcelona on 2015, said: “We are going to do everything in our power to beat Manchester City. I will do everything, professionally speaking, to win this game.

“My main objective is the Champions League and not the Ballon d’Or. That is not my main priority.

“In the future I need to be able to remember that I have won the Champions League once, twice or maybe three times.”

Neymar’s future is a regular source of speculation but he says he has never been happier at PSG.

He said: “I really feel great, really happy. I am most happy this season.

“This year PSG has really improved and we have worked a lot to keep improving. We really want to win the Champions League.”

PFA chief Taylor: Players showed care for fans with ESL criticism

Gordon Taylor, the outgoing chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association, has praised the role of players in derailing the breakaway European Super League project.

The Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ were involved in the plans to form a new European competition.

It would have had a catastrophic impact on the Champions League and sent domestic leagues into turmoil.

Players and fans came together last week to oppose the idea. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said on social media: “We don’t like it and we don’t want it to happen. This is our collective position.

“Our commitment to this football club and its supporters is absolute and unconditional.”

In an interview, team-mate James Milner became one of the first to publicly renounce the Super League. He was joined by City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in opposing it.

Players from other clubs outside the so-called ‘Big Six’ also played a role, with Leeds notably wearing T-shirts in opposition while warming up for their match against Liverpool a day after the plans were made public.

“Above all they have shown how much they care about supporters,” Taylor said.

Taylor also criticised the new Champions League format, which will see the competition increase from 32 to 36 teams from the 2024/25 season, with a new-look group stage that will see all teams play at least 10 fixtures.

“They (UEFA) keep going to the well for more and more games and looking at quantity rather than quality,” he added.

“We do need to be mindful of the health and safety of our players because, even though we’ve made massive improvements with regard to medicine and science and sport science, it is still only an average eight-year career because of the intensity of the competition.”

His reaction was similar to that of Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who said it was ‘hard to get excited’ about the added games.

Ahead of the Blues’ Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid, the German said: “All these discussions about Super League made (everyone) forget that we have now a new format of Champions League very soon.

“Did they ask any player about it? I don’t think so.

“I’m not sure if I like it because I can only see more games out of it. And more games in a schedule that we have… it’s very hard for me to be excited at all.”

‘Change is coming’ – Spurs fan group reveals protest plan

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust is planning a protest against the club’s owners in their final home game of the season against Aston Villa.

The move comes after the fan group called for the club’s executive board to resign in the wake of their involvement in the failed European Super League plan, insisting “change is coming”.

Some fans gathered at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to protest ahead of last week’s Premier League win over Southampton, but with up to 10,000 supporters expected to be allowed in for the Villa game early next month, THST is planning an organised protest.

It said in a statement: “Events of the last week have demonstrated beyond doubt that there must be change at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

“The actions of the current executive board have inflicted substantial reputational damage on our club as a result of their involvement in the discredited European Super League, risking damaging consequences.

“And despite the many achievements off the pitch, the failings on it are all too clear. We know there is growing supporter anger with the current club board and owners. We understand that. We need to focus that anger.

“Last Friday, our biggest-ever members’ meeting called for the executive board of THFC to resign and for the club’s owners to work with us to create a new board structure that better connects to our principles and priorities, better reflects the diversity of our fanbase, and that would prevent a repeat of the ESL debacle from ever shaming our club again.

“We understand the calls for “ENIC Out”. But simply calling for the board and owners to resign or sell without influencing what comes next achieves very little in the long term.

“The anticipated return of up to 10,000 fans to our stadium in May for the last Premier League home game of the campaign against Aston Villa gives us an opportunity to make our feelings clear.

“We need to do so in a positive and unified way that gets us the greatest possible support, and stays within Covid regulations under step three of the government’s roadmap out of lockdown. We will announce further plans via this website and on our social media channels.

“Change is coming and collectively we can positively influence that change. The last week has shown how much power fans coming together with one voice can have. We intend to use that voice to affect lasting change at THFC.”

Dallas set to be rewarded for great form with new Leeds deal

Leeds United will offer Stuart Dallas a major new contract at the end of the campaign, according to reports.

The Northern Irishman has been a standout performer on the Whites’ return to the Premier League.

He’s appeared in all 33 of their league matches, scoring seven goals and assisting two more.

According to Football Insider, Dallas will be rewarded with a big-money contract extension.

Leeds are hoping to tie down the 30-year-old to fresh terms and will offer him around double his current wages.

Dallas’ existing contract expires in June 2023. If a new deal is agreed then he could spend the final years of his career at Elland Road.

Club chiefs have been impressed with the way he has adapted to life in the top flight.

Dallas has been consistently brilliant in every position he has played, which varies from left-back to centre-midfield.

Boss Marcelo Bielsa knows he can rely on the player to put in a shift wherever he is on the pitch. He’s now one of the first names on the team sheet at the Yorkshire side.

Arguably his best performance of the campaign came in the 2-1 away victory over league leaders Manchester City.

Dallas scored two good goals as Leeds took all three points at the Etihad, despite being under intense pressure for much of the match.

He has also scored in victories over Newcastle, Leicester and Southampton, helping Leeds to compete for a top ten finish.

They’re currently ninth in the table, ahead of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Leeds know that there will be interest in their star players come the end of the season. Dallas is right up there and a new double-your-money deal should help to end any club’s hope of signing him.

His journey to the Premier League is certainly one of the more interesting ones. He started his career with Crusaders FC in Northern Ireland, before joining Brentford 2012. He made 75 appearances for the Bees before securing a £1.7million move to Leeds in 2015.

Dallas featured 45 times in the Championship last season as Leeds won the title on 93 points, ending their 16-year wait for Premier League football.

'We Need a People's Vaccine': Ex-World Leaders, Nobel Laureates Urge Biden to Back WTO Waiver

Calling on U.S. President Joe Biden to prioritize human need over corporate greed, more than 170 Nobel laureates and former heads of state and government on Wednesday sent an open letter urging him to back a waiver of intellectual property rules so that developing nations can ramp up coronavirus vaccine production and pursue a people’s vaccine to help end a pandemic that has now claimed nearly three million lives.

“We will not end today’s global pandemic until rich countries—most especially the United States—stop blocking the ability of countries around the world to mass produce safe and effective vaccines.”

Signers of the People’s Vaccine Alliance letter—who include former Irish President Mary Robinson, former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, as well as Nobel laureates including Joseph Stiglitz, Mairead Maguire, and Jody Williams—say they are “gravely concerned by the very slow progress in scaling up global Covid-19 vaccine access and inoculation in low- and middle-income countries.”

“The world saw unprecedented development of safe and effective vaccines, in major part thanks to U.S. public investment,” the letter states. “We all welcome that vaccination rollout in the U.S. and many wealthier countries is bringing hope to their citizens. Yet for the majority of the world that same hope is yet to be seen. New waves of suffering are now rising across the globe. Our global economy cannot rebuild if it remains vulnerable to this virus.”

The letter continues:

“With your leadership, we can ensure Covid-19 vaccine technology is shared with the world,” the letter to Biden concludes. “Supporting the emergency waiver of Covid-19-related intellectual property rules will give people around the globe a chance to wake up to a world free from the virus. We need a people’s vaccine.”

Letter signatory Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for co-discovering the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), said in a statement that “we will not end today’s global pandemic until rich countries—most especially the United States—stop blocking the ability of countries around the world to mass produce safe and effective vaccines.”

“Big pharmaceutical companies are setting the terms of the end of today’s pandemic—and the cost of allowing senseless monopolies is only more death and more people being pushed into poverty.”
—Muhammad Yunus,
Nobel laureate

“Global health is on the line,” she added. “History is watching. I, with my fellow laureates and scientists across the globe, urge President Biden to do the right thing and to support the TRIPS waiver, insist on pharmaceutical corporations to share vaccine technologies with the world, and strategically invest in distributed production.”

Muhammad Yunus, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for establishing the micro-lending Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, said that “big pharmaceutical companies are setting the terms of the end of today’s pandemic—and the cost of allowing senseless monopolies is only more death and more people being pushed into poverty.”

“Only government action—not philanthropy, and not the private sector—can solve today’s unprecedented crisis,” added Yunus. “We together urge President Biden to stand on the right side of history—and ensure a vaccine is a global common good, free of intellectual property protections.”

The world leaders’ and Nobel laureates’ letter came on the same day that an international coalition of 250 civil society groups urged the head of the World Trade Organization to embrace a temporary suspension of coronavirus vaccine-related patents.
