The runners, overall, showed greater functional connectivity – or connections between distinct brain regions – within several areas of the brain, including the frontal cortex, which is important for cognitive functions such as planning, decision-making and the ability to switch attention between tasks.
The study was designed by UA running expert David Raichlen, an associate professor of anthropology, and UA psychology professor Gene Alexander, who studies brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease as a member of the UA’s Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute.
“One of the things that drove this collaboration was that there has been a recent proliferation of studies, over the last 15 years, that have shown that physical activity and exercise can have a beneficial impact on the brain, but most of that work has been in older adults,” said co author David Raichlen associate professor of anthropology
“This question of what’s occurring in the brain at younger ages hasn’t really been explored in much depth, and it’s important. Not only are we interested in what’s going on in the brains of young adults, but we know that there are things that you do across your lifespan that can impact what happens as you age, so it’s important to understand what’s happening in the brain at these younger ages.”
“These activities that people consider repetitive actually involve many complex cognitive functions — like planning and decision-making — that may have effects on the brain.”
Since functional connectivity often appears to be altered in aging adults, and particularly in those with Alzheimer’s or other neurodegenerative diseases, it’s an important measure to consider, Alexander said. And what researchers learn from the brains of young adults could have implications for the possible prevention of age-related cognitive decline later on.
“One of the key questions that these results raise is whether what we’re seeing in young adults — in terms of the connectivity differences — imparts some benefit later in life,” said Alexander. “The areas of the brain where we saw more connectivity in runners are also the areas that are impacted as we age, so it really raises the question of whether being active as a young adult could be potentially beneficial and perhaps afford some resilience against the effects of aging and disease.”
These findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has named Edmonton in Canada as the host city for the ITU World Championships Grand Final in 2020.
The event will mark the third time Canada has hosted the World Championships with Edmonton having organised the race in 2001 and as recently as 2014.
Welcome to the ITU Edmonton Grand Finals!
Edmonton has also been the site of nine ITU World Cup events, and has hosted a stop on the World Triathlon Series every year since organising the Grand Final two years ago.
“Edmonton has been a staple city on the ITU calendar for many years,” ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado said. “The city provides unprecedented support to the event, while the local organising committee offers an exceptional experience for both elite and age grouper athletes. It will be a fantastic place to end the 2020 season after the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Last year, Edmonton hosted a World Paratriathlon Event, which they will do again in 2017 as host of a stop on the World Paratriathlon Series.
WORLDS HISTORY
The ITU Triathlon World Championships were first held in Avignon, France in 1989 and were won by triathlon legends Mark Allen and Erin Baker.
In 2009, the championships were revamped, expanding the former single-day World Championship race into a multi-city global series, culminating with the ITU Triathlon World Championship Grand Final. Athletes earn points throughout the season and those who win the overall series are crowned the ITU Triathlon World Champions.
The 2017 ITU World Championships will be held at the Grand Final in Rotterdam, followed by Gold Coast in 2018 and Lausanne in 2019.
Official dates for the 2020 World Championships will be confirmed and announced imminently, say the ITU.

Patna, India — After causing flooding and landslides in Nepal, three rivers are overflowing in northeastern India and submerging parts of the region, killing at least 14 people and affecting the lives of more than 2 million, officials said Monday. Pratata Amrit, a government official, said about 200,000 people left their flooded village homes in Bihar state, with 50,000 taking shelter in 152 state-run relief camps.
In remote northeastern India, 17 others were killed by flooding and mudslides and more than 2 million were affected by flooding in Assam and other states in the past four days, officials said.Nearly 80% of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, home to the endangered one-horn rhinoceros, has been flooded by the mighty Brahmaputra river, which flows along the sanctuary, forest officer Jutika Borah said.
Six deer trying to move to higher ground were killed by speeding vehicles on a highway crossing the park, Borah said. Forest guards have been posted on the highway to provide a corridor for the animals.Dozens killed in NepalOfficials in Nepal said flooding and landslides killed at least 67 people there. They said 30 others are missing, either swept away by swollen rivers or buried by mudslides since monsoon rains began pounding the region on Friday. The National Emergency Operation Center said 14 highways across the nation were blocked by floods or mudslides and attempts were being made to clear the debris and open them for traffic.Disaster on top of tragedyIn Bangladesh, at least a dozen people, mostly farmers, were killed by lightning since Saturday as monsoon rains battered parts of the low-lying country.Bangladesh, with 160 million people and more than 130 rivers, is prone to monsoon floods because of overflowing rivers and the heavy onrush of water from upstream India. The low-lying nation is also one of the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, which is slowly driving up sea levels.Earlier this month United Nations children’s agency UNICEF warned that thousands of families living in vast refugee camps for displaced Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar were at risk from flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall. The situation is particularly grim in the camps. Thousands of families were relocated to safer areas, but the sheer size of the camps — home to many tens of thousands of refugees — left a daunting challenge. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or IFRC, said last week that the heavy rains had triggered landslides in camps in Cox’s Bazar, prompting the agency to organize response operations in seven camps where more than 8,500 people had been affected and over 1,800 shelters were damaged or destroyed. It warned that the situation could get worse as the World Meteorological Organization has forecast that in July, Bangladesh will be hit by the highest amount of rainfall for all of 2019, with more than 730mm of rain (about 29 inches) expected over an average of 22 days.

Alistair Brownlee has come second, behind tennis world number one and 2016 Wimbledon winner Andy Murray, at BBC Sports Personality of the Year. In third place was showjumper Nick Skelton who, like the other two, also won gold in Rio.
The awards were held at a glittering ceremony at the Genting Arena in Birmingham and were presented by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan.
Alistair was the first triathlete to be nominated for the award and it followed a fantastic 2016 when he became the first triathlete ever to defend his Olympic gold in Rio.
But it was his feats at the 2016 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Cozumel, Mexico, in September that shot him to global prominence. The video of Alistair running with an exhausted Jonathan to the finishing line became the BBC’s most watched ever. Alistair could have won the race, but sacrificed victory to help his stricken brother across the line.
These emotional scenes were once again shown in the programme, earning Alistair one of the biggest cheers of the night from the show’s audience. And when asked what he said to Jonny in that moment in Mexico, he said, in a typical Yorkshire fashion, that he called him a ” **** idiot!”
Congrats Alistair Brownlee – you did triathlon proud – and yes you are supposed to ask for our votes!

Two young men previously thought to be missing are now suspects in the double homicides of an American woman and her Australian boyfriend, police in Canada announced Tuesday. The suspects are also linked to the death of a man found in northern British Columbia.
The suspects were identified as Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18. Police consider them dangerous and warned the public not to approach them but to instead call 911 immediately.Police describe McLeod as having dark brown hair and brown eyes and Schmegelsky as having sandy-brown hair. They are both 6-foot-4 and about 169 pounds. Authorities said the pair were spotted in northern Saskatchewan and were seen driving a gray 2011 Toyota Rav4.The Royal Mounted Police had been investigating Schmegelsky’s burning car south of Dease Lake when they found a body of an unidentified man about a mile from the car. It was located some 300 miles along remote highways where 24-year-old Chynna Deese, an American, and her 23-year-old Australian boyfriend Lucas Fowler were found fatally shot a week ago.
The young couple was wrapping up a two-week-long road trip through northern British Columbia and were found dead near their broken-down van.Stephen Fowler sent a desperate plea for information surrounding the deaths of his son Lucas, and Lucas’ girlfriend, a North Carolina.”Two young people, who had everything ahead of them, tragically murdered,” Fowler said.Newly released surveillance video showed the couple hugging at a gas station two days before their bodies were discovered. Police also released a sketch of a person they say was seen talking to Fowler.About 300 miles south in the same province several days later, police found a burning car belonging to the two missing teens. Police released a sketch of the victim, asking for help identifying him.”It’s unusual to have two major investigations undergoing of this nature in Northern BC at the same time,” said Janelle Shoihet of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. “So we recognize that there is a possibility that these could be linked.””48 Hours” has previously reported on a notorious remote stretch of road near these crimes dubbed the “Highway of Tears.” In the last 40 years, at least 18 women have disappeared or been found murdered along it.
As authorities investigate whether any of these new cases might be related, the victims’ friends and family want answers.”He was such a friendly guy who was kind to people he didn’t know, like it’s surreal,” said one of Fowler’s friends.Fowler’s father is a police officer in Australia, and he has two colleagues with him in Canada. Police haven’t determined the cause of death of the man found near the missing teens’ car.–Peter Martinez and Nikki Battiste contributed to this report.

Four teenagers have been charged for a highly-publicized attack on two women on a London bus in May, London’s Metropolitan Police said Thursday. The male suspects are all between the ages of 15 and 17.
One of the victims, Melania Geymonat, described the harrowing experience on Facebook, saying a group of young men demanded she kiss her girlfriend, Chris, for their entertainment.According to Geymonat, even as the couple tried to defuse the situation, the youths attacked them anyway. The teens ran away, and a phone and bag were stolen during the assault, police said. Both women were taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries and later released. All four teens have been charged with an aggravated hate crime under the Public Order Act. Three of the suspects face additional charges, including theft, handling stolen goods and possession of cannabis.
Then Prime Minister Theresa May said the May 30 assault was “sickening,” and London Mayor Sadiq Khan called it a “disgusting, misogynistic attack.”In an interview with BBC News, Chris said she won’t be afraid to show affection in public moving forward. “I am not scared about being visibly queer,” she said. “If anything, you should do it more. There are a lot of people’s rights at risk and people’s basic safety is at risk.”The suspects’ names were not released due to their age. They will appear in court Wednesday, Aug. 21.
