Keane wants former Man Utd teammate as his assistant at Celtic

Roy Keane would like his former Manchester United teammate Nicky Butt to be his assistant if he is given the Celtic job, according to reports.

Celtic have been without a permanent manager since Neil Lennon resigned in February. This was his second spell as their boss and it ended on a sour note. When he left, Rangers were 18 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers have since won the league title and Lennon’s former assistant, John Kennedy, remains in temporary charge.

OPINION: Lingard is the joyous cure to football cynicism

The likes of Chris Wilder and Eddie Howe have been linked with the vacancy, but Keane is among the favourites for the job.

The Sky Sports pundit spent six months as a Celtic player before he retired at the end of the 2005/06 campaign. He joined them in December 2005 which ended his twelve-year stint with Manchester United.

Speaking about his move to Scotland, as cited by The Daily Star, Keane said he has “always liked” Celtic:

“I wouldn’t have called it a dream but I’d always liked Celtic. And the Irish connection would have been on the back of my mind.

“I felt a bit of loyalty to them. This decision was a purely selfish one. I just wanted to play for Glasgow Celtic. Celtic is a special club.”

The Sun have reported that Keane would like to take Butt with him to Celtic if he gets the job. He made 387 appearances for Man United between 1992 and 2004.

Butt recently left the Red Devils after spending around nine years there as a coach. Speaking on his departure, he said it was the “right moment” to leave:

“Having come through the Academy myself to play almost 400 games for Manchester United, it has been an absolute privilege to come back and work with a new generation of talent making that same journey.

“I already know from my playing days how difficult it is to leave Manchester United.

“But it feels like the right moment for a new professional challenge.

“I look forward to exploring opportunities that build on the great experiences I’ve had here over the past nine years.”

‘Genuinely special’ star ‘proved right’ for rejecting Man Utd

Jude Bellingham has been ‘proved right’ for turning down Man United in favour of joining Borussia Dortmund.

Bellingham has been a revelation in the Bundesliga since leaving Birmingham last summer, starting in Champions League knockout games and making an impression on Gareth Southgate for England.

The 17-year-old had been courted by Man United but left them confused when he opted for Dortmund instead.

Watford captain Troy Deeney feels that decision has been fully justified already by a ‘genuinely special’ player.

‘When Jude Bellingham left Birmingham City, aged 16 and having made 44 first-team appearances, the club retired his No 22 shirt,’ he told the Sun on Sunday.

‘As a life-long Bluenose, I heard a fair bit of stick flying around about that decision.

‘And I had to admit I thought, ‘****ing hell, he’s only been playing for nine months!’

‘But when you see Bellingham now dictating games for Borussia Dortmund and looking so assured in the England midfield, you realise that this kid is genuinely special. He is absolute mustard.

‘Midway through last season, he was being strongly linked with Man United and I spoke to a couple of mates on the coaching staff at Birmingham about it.

‘I thought it might be a bit too soon for him to make such a massive move — but those guys who worked with him said: “Absolutely, 100 per cent, he would go to Man United and play straight away.”

‘In the end, Jude moved to Dortmund, deciding that youngsters are far more likely to start more big matches in the Bundesliga than in the Premier League.

‘The same route taken by another English kid, Jadon Sancho, who was in Watford’s academy as a schoolboy.

‘Both have been proved right.’

It was a chat with Sancho that actually persuaded him to move to Dortmund, unsurprisingly.

Maguire: How I and Man City rival have helped each other

Harry Maguire and John Stones are preparing to line up together once again after the old friends and England team-mates helped one another through rocky periods.

Having duelled during their time in the Sheffield United and Barnsley youth set-ups, the Yorkshire duo went on to become part of the defence that provided the base for the Three Lions’ memorable run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

Maguire and Stones are ready to team up again when England head to Albania for Sunday’s World Cup qualifier, with the latter set to make his first international start since November 2019.

Maguire growing into role as Man United’s ever-present heart

A dip in form and game time at Manchester City put the 26-year-old out of the international reckoning, only for an impressive resurgence to bring around a deserved recall ahead of the rearranged Euros.

Maguire has also had ups and downs since their last appearance together, with a high-profile Greek court case seeming to impact his performances for club and country early in the season.

“We always speak away from football,” the Manchester United captain said of Stones.

“He’s a good friend. I grew up with him, I grew up playing against him when he was at Barnsley.

“We’re not far from each other where we actually grew up and lived and come through.

“When you play centre-back especially, week in, week out you’re going to have some ups, you’re going have some downs, you’re going to be at fault.

“You’re not going to go throughout your career without being at fault for goals, so you get scrutinised when you play in the Premier League so you expect that.

“It’s about how strong you are mentally and how you can come through it.

“I’m pleased to see John. He’s back playing and back playing with confidence, back playing really well. And for myself, I feel exactly the same.”

Boothroyd admits Portugal test is his biggest match as U21 boss

England U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd has admitted that their match against Portugal is his biggest test yet as a manager.

The Young Lions play on Sunday in the second game of their U21 European Championship group stage.

It’s a must-win for Boothroyd’s team following their 1-0 loss at the hands of Switzerland on Thursday.

FEATURE: Is it time for England to ditch three-at-the-back?

Speaking ahead of the clash, Boothroyd told reporters: “Without a doubt, the next game is always the most important one but when you are in a tournament it ramps it right up.

“This situation is part of the development and growth of our players. The opportunity is there, the players know, the staff know, I know the importance of it.

“I feel very fortunate to represent my country and work with the best players in Europe and in the world. They are young boys and still learning.

“Is it an important game for me? It’s an important game for England Under-21s, we are still in there fighting and we won’t go down without a fight.”

The team are in Group D and have to pick up three points to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Despite naming a strong squad with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Emile Smith Rowe starting, England failed to score in their opening fixture.

Nice forward Dan Ndoye got the only goal of the game to give Switzerland a surprise win.

The result led to plenty of criticism for Boothroyd. His squad is seen as one of the strongest in the world with a host of Premier League talent.

The manager will switch things up for their clash against Portugal. PSV attacker Noni Madueke will make his debut.

Boothroyd continued: “We are a team who like to pride ourselves on creative football and goals we’re expected to score.

“We were a blunt instrument which was not like us. We’ve talked about that, there was quite a bit of reflection. We have had a blip in the road but if it was easy it wouldn’t be worth doing.

“The players have been reminded about the importance of how we play the game. We were a bit irritated with what we got against Switzerland.

“We came here to win two games out of three, ideally three, but we’re still on track. We have to pull ourselves together and get cracking for the next game. There’s no time for being moody.”

Scientists to announce “groundbreaking result” in black hole telescope project

Astronomers say a major announcement is on the way based on findings from the international Event Horizon Telescope project, which experts believe could be the first-ever photographs to show the surroundings of a black hole. On Wednesday, April 10, the Event Horizon Telescope team will be holding multiple press conferences around the world to announce a “groundbreaking result” in their study of black hole environments.

The Event Horizon Telescope is an international collaboration that aims to capture images of black hole areas by linking up various radio dishes from around the world that together create a virtual telescope roughly the size of planet Earth. The project began capturing data in 2006. Scientists from the U.S., France, and the Netherlands will be making their announcement Wednesday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C, while related press conferences will occur simultaneously in Brussels, Santiago, Shanghai, Taipei, and Tokyo. By creating a massive virtual telescope, the Event Horizon Telescope project aims to generate enough magnifying power to bring black hole environments into focus, allowing for the study of their characteristics. Because black holes do not emit light, they cannot be seen and are technically invisible. Instead, the Event Horizon Telescope looks to study areas surrounding a black hole, namely the gas which radiates around it due to its intensely strong gravity pull, in an attempt to capture images of its general dynamics.
Black holes are regions within the fabric of outer space that have such strong gravitational pulls that nothing, whether it be mass particles or light waves, can escape from it. The point within the black hole which nothing can escape from is called its event horizon. Scientists believe black holes form out of the remains of recently collapsed stars, which pull in all mass and light from its surrounding areas to grow bigger, and that supermassive black holes form the center of most galaxies, creating gravitational forces that link the various stars together. Einstein was right: Scientists detect gravitational waves in breakthroughThe size of any black hole is always proportionate to its mass, so some may only be a few times the mass of our sun, which are called stellar black holes, while others are millions or billions of times the mass of the sun — supermassive black holes believed to anchor the constellations of galaxies.  The Event Horizon Telescope project has pinpointed two supermassive black holes to study: Sgr A*, which lays at the heart of our Milky Way galaxy, and M87, a giant elliptical galaxy located in the constellation Virgo.
