Klopp addresses Liverpool quit rumours after Leicester loss

Jurgen Klopp has dismissed rumours that he could quit Liverpool or even take a break after a difficult few months for the Reds boss.

The German boss has been dealing with the death of his mother Elisabeth, with Klopp unable to travel to Germany for her funeral.

On top of that, the Reds have been struggling on the pitch with Liverpool losing their last three Premier League matches, while they were knocked out of the FA Cup by arch-rivals Man Utd.

GOSSIP: Liverpool and Spurs linked with Villa man

When asked how he was by reporters, Klopp replied: “There is a lot stuff going around, politics, private things. But I’m okay. Absolutely okay. We had training and an analysing meeting before that. And we are close to flying to Budapest for the first time.”

A banner was put up by fans outside Anfield over the weekend to show support for Klopp after wild rumours that he could quit the club.

On the banner and those rumours, Klopp said: “I heard about both. I don’t feel I need special support in the moment but it is nice (to have it). Rumours of me quitting or taking break? Neither (is true).

“I don’t need a break. Everyone knows privately it has been tough time but it wasn’t just last three weeks, it was longer before that. We always deal with it as a family 100%.”

Klopp added: “Thanks for all the support, people tell me about it. I am very grateful for it. But they can think about other things as nobody needs to worry about me.”

Saka selects ‘perfect’ part of playing under Arteta at Arsenal

Bukayo Saka believes Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has struck the right balance between youth and experience.

Arteta has not been afraid to back his young talent over more established names and he did so once again in Sunday’s 4-2 Premier League win over Leeds.

Arsenal aptain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s hat-trick grabbed the headlines with Hector Bellerin also on the scoresheet at the Emirates Stadium before the visitors rallied and halved the deficit through Pascal Struijk and Helder Costa.

JOHNNY NIC: How do we know all those football statistics are true?

But there were good performances from Arsenal’s precocious talents as Saka and Emile Smith Rowe both claimed assists and full debutant Martin Odegaard looked good at times.

The likes of club-record signing Nicolas Pepe, summer recruit Willian and striker Alexandre Lacazette were only among the substitutes as Saka hailed Arteta for keeping faith with the less experienced members of his squad.

“It’s perfect,” the England international replied when asked about Arteta picking young players alongside the likes of Aubameyang and David Luiz.

“Because as a young player you get experience around you and people to guide you when things aren’t going well.

“They can give you confidence, instructions and things like that. I just feel like he (Arteta) has got the right balance for us at the moment.”

Aubameyang’s first-ever Premier League hat-trick came on his return to the side, having not started any of the previous five games after leaving Arsenal’s Covid secure bubble to visit his ill mother.

“He is amazing, I can’t speak highly enough of him,” Saka said of the striker.

“He showed everyone how much quality he has, when he gets a chance he is going to put it away.

“He can do everything, so we are so happy to have him and it’s good that he got a hat-trick for his confidence. We have a big week ahead and we hope he can score some more goals for us.

“The last two games we lost, but I thought we were quite unlucky. So to get this one over the line, get the win, it sets us up for quite a tough week and gives us a lot of confidence going into the games.”

Leeds threatened a memorable comeback after Struijk and Costa made their mark, the latter one of two substitutes made by manager Marcelo Bielsa at half-time.

Speaking after the Arsenal game Bielsa bemoaned a poor first half but felt his side had the better of the game after the interval.

Struijk, whose powerful header brought his first goal for the club, revealed Bielsa had called for more energy during his halftime team talk.

“We didn’t bring the energy we always bring, so it’s a bit disappointing we didn’t do that,” he said.

“The majority of what was said was to bring the energy back, then the football will come.

“It’s such a difference when we do that, our football is so much better.

“It means a lot to me to score my first goal but it’s just disappointing that we lost the game.”

Redknapp pinpoints main reason for Spurs drop off in form

Jamie Redknapp thinks Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is “trying to please the fans” too much and should go back to playing his way.

Tottenham have only managed three wins in their last 12 Premier League matches, with four losses in their last five fixtures, including a 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Saturday.

Their poor form has seen Spurs drop from potential title contenders to ninth position in a couple of months, with Mourinho coming under pressure from sections of the fanbase.

OPINION: Premier League winners and, well, Jose Mourinho

And Redknapp doubts Tottenham would be in this position now if Mourinho hadn’t tried to “make other people happy”.

“Tottenham were outclassed in so many areas,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “They were top on December 15 and now they’re 14 points behind Man City. When I look at the team that was top, a lot of people were talking about them being able to win the league, they’re loving the way they’re playing, a Jose masterclass, defensively sound and breathtaking on the break.

“But when I see this Spurs side right now, it’s a shadow of that team. No pace going forward, Son is doing more defending than attacking and the way they’re playing right now, that almost feels like a Jose masterclass and they are really struggling.

“It almost feels like Jose is trying to make other people happy with the way he’s playing. When they were playing well at that stage, they were playing Moussa Sissoko and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and it wasn’t a joy to watch, but it was winning for them.

“Now it’s like he’s almost trying to please the fans and it’s not working. Rotating the back four all the time – when does that bring anyone any confidence? Then he said they’d made mistakes – yes, because you keep changing the back four every week. That’s what it feels like to me.

“It’s a team that is lacking confidence, but he has to accept responsibility for that. He brings in Dele Alli and Gareth Bale and he wants them to bail him out, if you like. He’s been treating them badly, they’ve not been in the team and now you’re asking them to make a difference for you? That’s not how modern football works.

“You need to keep players onside and Jose is making a habit right now of upsetting too many people that he needs as allies, not enemies.”

Spurs boss Mourinho admits ‘wrong decisions’ over Bale, Alli

Jose Mourinho has suggested that he may have made the “wrong decisions” over Gareth Bale and Dele Alli this season as he continues to try and find the right formula at Spurs.

Tottenham lost for the fourth time in five Premier League matches as Manchester City beat them 3-0 on Saturday, thanks to Ilkay Gundogan’s second-half double and Rodri’s 23rd-minute penalty.

Mourinho summoned both Alli and Bale from the bench in the latter stages of the game. Both have appeared to be out of favour but Mourinho insists they could still have a big role to play.

OPINION: Premier League winners and, well, Jose Mourinho

“Good players when they are fit and when they are ready and when they can [play] are always welcome, always welcome,” Mourinho told reporters.

“We coaches sometimes we can make wrong decisions, we all do, but not one of us is crazy.

“Not one of us says I don’t want this player to help me and the team when the player has the potential and the conditions he needs to do it.

“We miss Gio [Lo Celso] for a long, long time. We miss [Sergio] Reguilon for a few weeks. If we can have them back, if we can have Dele and Gareth fit and ready to play, it’s a big improvement in our squad.”

Mourinho was unhappy with a challenge on Son Heung-min by Joao Cancelo late in the game.

He said: “He has a wound in his ankle. A wound means a stud. A stud means a card – but I don’t think a red.”

Neville: ‘Dominant’ Man U star a possible partner for Maguire

Gary Neville has suggested that Scott McTominay would act as a good central defensive partner for Harry Maguire.

The Scotsman joined Manchester United when he was just five years old. He played as a striker for much of his youth career until he was converted into a central midfielder.

McTominay made his first-team debut for the Red Devils in May 2017, as a late substitute against Arsenal.

The 24-year-old has been a regular for Manchester United over the past four seasons. He has played 114 times for his boyhood club since making his debut.

The midfielder is arguably enjoying his best season to date this term. He has already featured 30 times for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in 2020/21 and he has scored seven times.

The centre-back position has been a troubling one for Manchester United in the past couple of years. Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have taken it in turns to start alongside Maguire.

Speaking on the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel, Neville insisted that McTominay has all the attributes needed to succeed at centre-back:

“I thought McTominay would be Maguire’s centre back partner. He’s quick, aggressive, he gets up the pitch, can pass well as a defender, dominant.

“I don’t see much difference between him and Stones, Rice, [Tottenham’s Eric] Dier, there’s a lot of similarities.”

Gossip: Man Utd, Liverpool defender chase; Raphinha race

A ‘CRUEL’ BLESSING
Manchester United have suffered a ‘cruel blow’. Having tracked Dayot Upamecano for 18 months they are set to miss out on the Frenchman – a signing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘personally requested to the board last summer’.

Upamecano is set to join Bayern Munich, with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic confirming the club are close to activating his release clause in the summer.

But the Express claim this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise as United can now move for ‘complete player’ Jules Kounde.

The Sevilla defender – who was the subject of a £45million Manchester City bid in the summer – is now Solskjaer’s ‘top target’ this summer. Or at least that’s what ‘early signs suggest’ – which is wonderfully vague.

It is thought Sevilla now want around £55million for their star asset.

ESPN reported that the 22-year-old is indeed on United’s four-man centre-back shortlist along with Tyrone Mings, Raphael Varane and Braga’s David Carmo.

The Express wraps up the story by saying United will ‘finally have a defender capable of reaching the heights of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at Old Trafford’ should they land Kounde. No pressure then.

ANOTHER LIVERPOOL BARGAIN
While United are preparing a big-money move for a new centre-back, Liverpool will reportedly stick their hands in the bargain bin again this summer.

After moves for Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in January, the Mirror claims Jurgen Klopp will target a more ‘ready-made’ solution in the summer. Which seems like an odd way round to do things.

Anyway, Torino centre-back Bremer is said to be their top summer target as someone who will ‘compliment’ Virgil van Dijk when he returns from his knee injury.

Torino are aware of the growing interest in the 22-year-old and are expecting several offers for him in the summer.

The report states that Bremer ‘fits the profile for Liverpool given his age and the fact they wouldn’t have to break the bank for a player valued at less than £10million.’ Being good at defending should probably also be included in that profile.

But Bremer has impressed in Serie A this season and Liverpool are keen to get an offer in early to avoid a bidding war this summer.

RAPH RACE
United could also move for the Leeds star made for Liverpool.

The Manchester Evening News speculate (and it is pure speculation) that United could heed Bruno Fernandes’ advice by pursuing a deal for Raphinha, who Fernandes dovetailed with impressively during his time at Sporting Lisbon.

“Raphinha, I miss Raphinha,” Fernandes said in December 2019.

“He’s a player with whom I had a different chemistry from the others. He understood me at a glance.

“He knew, according to the movement of my body, where I was going to put the ball to him. I also miss him because he brought joy to the locker room. He’s also a responsible and hardworking person.”

Guys, just stop messing around and put Bruno in charge of transfers. Worth a go.

Hodgson: Palace have failed to shrug off one-man team criticism

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson says his team has failed to shrug off their reliance on talisman Wilfried Zaha.

The Ivorian forward missed their 3-0 loss to Burnley at Selhurst Park due to a hamstring injury.

The Eagles endured a torrid start as Johann Gudmundsson put Burnley ahead in the fifth minute.

READ: Klopp ‘cannot accept’ poor defending in Liverpool defeat

He pounced on a defensive error from Scott Dann, who failed to clear.

Jay Rodriguez then bagged his first league goal of the campaign as Burnley doubled their lead.

The striker headed home from close range after Vicente Guaita was prevented from catching the corner.

Matt Lowton made it 3-0 early in the second half with a brilliant volley.

Speaking about Palace’s reliance on Zaha, Hodgson told reporters: “I was hoping we would see one or two outstanding individual performances like we have seen from Wilfried Zaha so often over the years. Here is the chance to put the criticism to bed that we need Zaha in our attack and once again we failed.”

Speaking more widely about the performance, he continued: “Once again we give ourselves that enormous problem by conceding goals so early in the game.

“I was hoping in the second half we would put some things right, try and play football and maybe claw our way back in. Then we concede that third goal and you are playing against Burnley, they are a very good side and good at what they do.

“All I can do is stand here and admit we were beaten by the better side. We don’t defend things properly.”

It was Hodgson’s 350th Premier League game in management, but it will be one to forget for the 73-year-old.

His team were outplayed at home and failed to make the most of their chances.

They now sit 13th in the table on 29 points.

Klopp ‘cannot accept’ poor defending in Leicester defeat

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he ‘cannot accept’ the poor defensive performance in their 3-1 loss to Leicester.

The Reds went ahead in the 67th minute as Roberto Firmino set up Mo Salah with a brilliant roulette-type turn.

The Egyptian forward dispatched of the chance by guiding the ball past Kasper Schmeichel.

Leicester equalised in the 78th minute through James Maddison. He scored from a free kick, which was originally ruled out for offside. VAR overturned the decision, giving the Foxes a route back into the match.

Jamie Vardy then capitalised on another error from Alisson, who gave away two goals in the recent loss to Man City.

The keeper came charging forward but failed to clear, allowing Vardy to score in an open goal.

Harvey Barnes rounded off the win with a goal in the 85th minute to make it 3-1.

Speaking after the poor performance, Klopp told BBC Sport: “It was a clear game that we should win. We played good football, dominated possession, took the game out of Leicester but apart from that we were really top in the game.

“We scored a goal, could have and should have scored more. Everything fine and then penalty, free-kick, offside, not offside, goal. That had a proper impact. That is something that has to change. The first goal for me is offside. The difference is we think it’s an objective thing but it’s not.

“Three players offside for Leicester but it was decided to take another moment in the game. That is how it is.

“The second goal is a misunderstanding obviously. It is a situation where we should shout and I didn’t hear anyone shout. It is not that cool.

“The third goal I really don’t like. We are so open. I cannot accept. That was it. The performance for 75 minutes or so was outstanding then we lost 3-1. That shows what a tricky situation we are in.”

Midfielder James Milner added to Klopp’s injury woes when he had to be substituted in the 16th minute.

When asked about Milner, Klopp continued: “Hamstring. Hopefully it is only a little bit but we did not want to take the risk.”

Klopp elaborated on his frustration over Leicester’s opener to BT Sport.

“We conceded a goal, a really tough one to take, it was a turning point in the game on VAR. I have seen it and when they stop the situation it looks a clear offside – that’s it.

“The second goal is a misunderstanding, we said they need to get used to each other and they were fine for 75 minutes, it was a really good game. On the pitch we were the clear dominant side. We had chances and then we concede two goals.

“We were much too open at that moment and that is not OK. Alisson had a super game and then at that moment he came out, I didn’t hear him shouting.

“The turning point was the first goal, We changed too much with one goal, that’s the criticism for us. We didn’t react well.”

Ex-Man Utd defender urges Solskjaer to replace ‘selfish’ Maguire

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told to find a replacement for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

The England defender has had an inconsistent season, despite being an ever-present in the heart of United’s back four.

Ex-United defender Paul Parker, who won two Premier League titles with the Red Devils in the 1990s, says he was never convinced by Maguire and Solskjaer should be looking for a couple of new centre-backs this summer.

“Despite the position that Manchester United find themselves in the Premier League, they still need to strengthen in the transfer market this summer,” Parker told The Sun.

“Regarding the centre-backs, people talk about bringing in a new partner for Harry Maguire, but I would look at bringing in two centre-backs, why can’t it be a player who comes in and plays alongside Victor Lindelof?

“Harry Maguire is not a leader, he plays the game for himself, he sits way too deep, he dribbles for the sake of dribbling and runs himself into cul-de-sacs.

“The goal against Sheffield United, he put David De Gea in a terrible position, and he made a terrible clearance which people then blamed the goalkeeper.”

Negative stats: Every Premier League club is sh*t at something

“Sometimes you need to look at the build-up to see the mistakes,” the pundit added.

“I have always been unsure about Maguire since the day Manchester United signed him. When they paid £80million, the club didn’t buy an £80million centre back, it was great business by Leicester.

“Bringing in competition for places always helps players to improve their game. You look at Luke Shaw this season, he has really upped his game since the signing of Alex Telles.”

Gossip: Arsenal to sign Sporting star for cut-price fee

GUNNERS TARGET TIAGO TOMAS
Arsenal are said to be close to completing their first bit of summer business with the signing of Tiago Tomas.

That’s the claim in The Sun, which reports that the Gunners have been talking to Sporting Lisbon over a cut-price deal for football’s oldest-looking teenager.

Tomas is an 18-year-old forward who can play centrally or from the right. He has scored five goals and laid on three more this season and his performances have been enough to convince Arsenal to move quickly.

Apparently, Edu has been in contact with his Sporting Lisbon counterpart Hugo Viana – is anyone feeling very old all of a sudden? – to discuss a deal for Tomas, who signed a new contract with Sporting only last summer which included a release clause of £52million.

But Covid means Sporting may be willing to accept less than half that amount, and anything in the region of £20million is said to be enough.

CITY TO NET £16M FOR ANGELINO
RB Leipzig appear set to make an even earlier start than Arsenal to their summer recruitment…

After beating Augsburg on Friday night, the closest club to Bayern in the Bundesliga table are set to confirm the signing of Angelino on a permanent deal from Manchester City.

Angelino moved to Leipzig on a season-long loan last summer, with the Germans agreeing to an appearance-based obligation-to-buy clause.

The wing-back had to feature in 12 Bundesliga matches throughout the current season, with five coming in the second half of the campaign.

Angelino’s appearance against Augsburg means Leipzig are now obligated to pay City £16million.

He’s come a long way since being described as ‘absolutely awful’ before the start of last season.

Man City v Tottenham – one big game, five big questions

ARSENAL TEEN WANTED BY LEVERKUSEN
Angelino could find himself up against an Arsenal youngster next season…

Folarin Balogun is into the final months of his contract at the Emirates and clubs across Europe are keeping an eye on the 19-year-old.

The Evening Standard reckons Arsenal haven’t given up hope of persuading the forward to recommit but, understandably, Balogun is taking his sweet time to weigh up all of his options.

One of his suitors, according to The Mirror, is Bayer Leverkusen. The Germans are said to have joined Stuttgart and Rennes in the race for Balogun, who is yet to make a start for the Gunners this season.
