Man United lack the belief to win the title, says Agbonlahor

Man United do not look like a team that are “hungry to win games or the title” according to former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Red Devils went 13 games unbeaten in the Premier League after their loss to Arsenal in November. This saw them overtake Liverpool to sit top of the table.

They have stuttered in their last couple of games, though. Their unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Sheffield United last Wednesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were well off the pace as the Blades beat them 2-1 at Old Trafford. They followed this up with a disappointing 0-0 draw with Arsenal on Saturday at the Emirates.

Man United are now second and they are three points behind Man City. But Pep Guardiola’s side have played a game less.

United hope to return to winning ways on Tuesday night as they host Southampton. Agbonlahor told talkSPORT, as cited by The Express, that he cannot see them winning the title this season:

“A lot of teams have been dropping points this season, and that’s why it’s been a crazy season and anyone can win the title.

“You look at Man United’s players and they should be looking to be in the top four positions.

“But going off their performance [against Arsenal] and their performance against Sheffield United, you can’t see this Manchester United team winning the title.

“Against Arsenal, they didn’t look like a team that was hungry to win games or win the title.

“If that was Manchester City they would have found a way to win because they want to win the title.

“They believe they can, Liverpool believe they still can – but this Manchester United team looks like they will take top four. They are not really looking to win the title.”

Tuchel must meet key target to extend Chelsea contract

Thomas Tuchel will only be offered a contract extension by Chelsea if he keeps the Blues in the Champions League for the next two seasons.

The 18-month deal Tuchel signed last week is heavily incentivised and contains clauses triggering an option for him to remain at the club should he keep them in Europe’s showcase club competition, according to the Mail.

The German boss admitted he was initially a little perturbed at only being offered an 18-month deal but the chance to extend it dampened his concerns.

“At first it was a concern, I was a little like, ‘Oh, why 18 months?’, revealed Tuchel.

“But after only one minute I thought: ‘What does it change? What does it change if they give me four and a half years? They could sack me anyway.’

“If they are not happy with me, they will sack me anyway. And if they gave me four and a half years they would put in a clause that when they sack me, they’ll pay me.”

Chelsea’s move towards performance-related contracts reflects Roman Abramovich’s desire to minimise compensation after spending over £110million in pay-offs to sacked managers.

The club’s decision to sack Lampard last week will not significantly add to that bill as his three-year deal contained a break clause after two seasons.

— Takeshi Morishima returned to Japan on Friday and made no comment on his WWE dark matches last week. He wrestled Charlie Haas on Raw and Jamie Noble on SmackDown. Morishima only said that he had learned some new wrestling techniques from Ricky Steamboat that he would use to beat fellow rival Kensuke Sasaki in their GHC title match at Budokan Hall.

— The actual rating for last week’s edition of SmackDown hasn’t come out, but based on the fast national ratings, the show drew 3.85 million viewers, which is down from usual.

— Former SmackDown performer Brian Mailhot (a.k.a. Palmer Canon) won his debut MMA fight against Tony Rea in Plymouth, MA on Saturday night. You may remember him as the “network executive” for The CW on SmackDown in 2005-2006. He quit WWE (and his wrestling career) due to a flare-up with John Bradshaw Layfield during the European tour of the spring of 2006. In the storylines, he was responsible for introducing The Boogeyman, the Juniors division and turning Paul Burchill into a pirate. You can see a video of his fight at this link. He went under the name “Hacksaw.”
