Liverpool help Marine with pre-match Spurs analysis

Marine manager Neil Young has revealed how Liverpool have helped provide pre-match analysis for their historic FA Cup tie with Tottenham.

The eighth-tier club host Spurs in the competition’s biggest ever mismatch, with 161 places between them in the footballing ladder, providing they come through a second round of coronavirus testing unscathed.

They were tested again on Thursday night and, having come through a first round without any positive tests, are hoping for a similar result in the next 24 hours.

Neighbours Liverpool, who beat Spurs in the Premier League last month, have provided Marine with video analysis of Jose Mourinho’s side as well as use of their training ground on Saturday.

Young said: “We are well prepped as we can be from a part-time perspective,” he said. “I have done a lot of analysis with the help of Liverpool, who have given us some information in terms of the games. We have done a lot of analysis on them.

“All they have done is given us access to games that we can’t get access to. We see a lot of the Premier League games live but unless we record them we haven’t got the scouting networks or the software to go back and look at games.

“They have sent us the recordings of the games so we can do the analysis.

“We have had a few issues with the latest lockdown regarding training venues, our pitch where we were due to train yesterday had to be covered due to the frost and then leisure centres that we would normally use to train have been closed because of lockdown.

“We are very thankful that Everton stepped in to allow us to train last minute at their training ground at Finch Farm and Liverpool have stepped in to allow us to train there tomorrow.

“We are very grateful for that. From a part-time perspective it is a little bit of a nightmare with these Covid restrictions.”

Spurs will have to be prepared for a culture shock as they visit the Marine Travel Arena which just has two stands, with the remaining sides backing on to houses.

Mourinho’s side, used to the plush surroundings of their £1billion stadium, will get changed in a bar in the clubhouse, but will receive good hospitality.

“It’s a tight little ground, they’ll come in off the road,” Young added. “They’ll get changed in the bar area, obviously because of Covid restrictions.

“It’s three-sided, a very tight ground, houses on two sides, big stand behind one of the goals – it’s a proper non-league ground, it’s what most non-league grounds at our level are like.

“They won’t be getting changed in the dressing room, they’ll be getting changed in the bar area. We normally get changed in there.

“They still have to use the away dressing rooms to shower but in terms of changing they’ll have a fairly big bar area to change and we’ll be back in the smaller dressing room because there’s not as many of us.

“What they will get is great hospitality – everyone that comes to Marine goes away talking about how well looked after they were and Tottenham will have that same experience.”

Marine, whose Northern Premier League North West Division campaign is currently suspended due to the current lockdown, have a squad made up of bin men, NHS staff, teachers and factory workers, whose maximum wage is £300 a week.

Chairman Paul Leary said: “For Marine, step eight, to play Tottenham Hotspur is the dream of all dreams to be quite honest.

“We do have a great history but certainly in our 126 years this game against Tottenham is without a doubt the biggest game in our history.

“2020 was a dreadful year with the impact on all businesses and people’s health and livelihoods through Covid.

“The FA Cup run our players have enjoyed, it’s given us something to smile about and to play Tottenham with all the grief around us and with the new lockdown this game will put a smile on people’s faces.

“And for Marine to play Tottenham on BBC on Match of the Day is fantastic.”

Arteta insists Ozil Arsenal legacy ‘unquestionable’

Manager Mikel Arteta has insisted Mesut Ozil’s legacy at Arsenal is intact regardless of whether he plays for the club again.

The World Cup winner has entered the final six months of his lucrative deal with the Gunners – which is said to be worth some £350,000-a-week – and can now talk to overseas teams.

Arteta and Ozil’s agent have both this week confirmed his future will become clearer in the coming days, with Fenerbahce and DC United linked with the playmaker who has made more than 250 appearances for Arsenal since he signed in 2013 from Real Madrid.

While the 32-year-old has not been selected in 10 months and become a marginalised figure, he has won multiple FA Cups at the Emirates and been a key player in runs to the League Cup and Europa League Final in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Ozil was not included in Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squads for this term, but is eligible to feature in Saturday’s FA Cup third round tie with Newcastle if picked by his manager.

Arteta said: “I don’t know what is going to happen so I prefer not to talk about that (his future), but what Mesut has done at the football club is unquestionable and that will stay.

“It doesn’t matter if he plays two more games, 10 more games or none. What he has done is there for the records, for the history of the club, and his contribution I think nobody can discuss that.”

The departure of Ozil this month would help ensure the attacker is no longer the elephant in the room at Arsenal.

Already the club have allowed Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba to depart on loan which is in contrast to the summer transfer window, where the majority of incomings and outgoings occurred late with Thomas Partey only joining on deadline day.

While Arteta would prefer the Gunners’ business to be finalised early in January, he knows the challenges they face.

He added: “To be fair at the moment the market is really complicated.

“The situation around every club is not easy and to get negotiations going, it makes it harder because you cannot be face to face or travel to another country and make a deal happen like that.

“Everything has to be done over the phone or on Zoom. It can go either way. I can tell you what I would like, to on day one have the squad and the players out and in sorted. I think it is really complicated right now.”

Ahead of the start of their FA Cup defence, the mood at Arsenal is more positive compared to how it was midway through December.

Pressure was building before a run of three consecutive wins – sparked by a derby victory over Chelsea on Boxing Day.

It was the Blues who Arsenal defeated on August 1 to win the FA Cup for a record 14th time and Arteta is determined to enjoy more success in the tournament.

“It was a beautiful day,” the Spaniard said. “The last game of the season and everybody take off after that. It was a really difficult end to the year with all the Covid-19 situation we have in place, so obviously it was great to finish the season on a high.

“We will go after every competition. We are the holders, we have to defend that title and we know how it means to the football club and the history that is related to the FA Cup, so it is a great competition for us to play.”

Ozil ‘transfer agreed’ as Fenerbahce plan ‘special ceremony’

Mesut Ozil and Fenerbahce have reportedly agreed terms over the Arsenal midfielder’s proposed move to Turkey this month.

The German is expected to sign his new contract by Saturday with a ‘special presentation ceremony’ planned on his arrival.

Ozil has been frozen out by Mikel Arteta at Arsenal this season and hasn’t featured for the club since March.

He’s been linked with a move to the MLS but it appears Fenerbahce have won the race for his signature.

According to Turkish outlet Sabah (via Sport Witness), everything is almost in place after Ozil’s legal representatives spoke to the Arsenal hierarchy.

The 32-year-old is set to be handed the number 23 shirt at his presentation ceremony in Turkey.

Arteta was asked about Ozil in his Thursday press conference, ahead of his side’s clash with Newcastle.

The Spaniard said: “If something is sorted this month it is because it is good for both parties – for Mesut and for the club. If that is the case we will move forward, if it is not the case then he will continue here. We will decide what is happening in the next few days.”

Arsenal outcast Sokratis linked with Genoa in search of game time

Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos could reportedly make a January switch to Italian side Genoa.

The Greek international has fallen out of favour at the Emirates in recent seasons.

He hasn’t featured under Mikel Arteta this campaign after being omitted from the Premier League and Europa League squads.

His search for game time means he could now join Genoa, according to reports in Italy (via the Daily Mail).

Sokratis’ contract is set to expire in June, meaning Genoa can pay a reduced fee to sign him this month.

He will be available for free in the summer if the Serie A outfit decides against that option.

The report states that Sokratis is ‘keen’ on a January move to resurrect his career.

He hasn’t featured in the Premier League since the 1-0 victory over West Ham back in March.

Fenerbahce have also been linked with a move, but it seems the 32-year-old would prefer to join Genoa.

He played for them between 2008 and 2010, making 59 appearances in all competitions.

Sokratis went on to join Werder Bremen and then Borussia Dortmund in July 2013.

Arsenal signed the centre back for £14.5 million in 2018, but he hasn’t had the desired impact.

Arteta prefers to play the likes of Rob Holding and David Luiz. Pablo Mari is also available to the Spaniard after making his loan deal permanent in the summer.

Gunners chiefs are in the process of transforming their defensive options, with Sokratis one of multiple players set to lose out.

They’re prioritising younger players, shown by the signing of Omar Rekik yesterday.

Fellow young defender William Saliba has made a loan switch to Nice, however, after failing to make his Arsenal debut.
