Fabinho reveals Liverpool star’s reaction to Real transfer rumours

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho says Mo Salah “hasn’t changed at all” despite rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

The Egyptian forward has been linked with a move to Spain ever since a former teammate said he was ‘unhappy’ at Liverpool.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are thought to be interested in signing the 28-year-old in the summer.

Salah has been in exciting form this campaign, scoring 13 league goals and assisting three more in just 16 Premier League appearances.

And Fabinho claims that none of the transfer talk is affecting Salah with the former Chelsea man still acting the same around the training ground.

“Big players will always have their names involved in rumours. Salah plays for Liverpool, one of the biggest teams in the world. I think it’s normal to see his name linked to other teams, especially from different leagues,” Fabinho told ESPN Brasil.

“Anyway, I see him very happy here and pleased with his performances this season. He’s very demanding with himself, he wants to be the best, he wants to help the team and works hard for it.

“It’s always been the case and it hasn’t changed at all. He keeps scoring goals, which everyone is used to seeing. In the changing room he’s always talking to everyone and making jokes.

“I don’t see anything affecting him. Overall, I am not following the news so I’m not sure about any rumours. As I said, top quality players will always be linked to big clubs.”

Neville gives 759-word verdict on Man Utd title chances

Gary Neville thinks Man Utd fans should be allowed to “believe” they can win the Premier League title in a “strange season” after they beat Burnley on Tuesday night.

Paul Pogba’s deflected second-half volley secured the Red Devils a hard-fought 1-0 win in sub-zero conditions at Turf Moor, where Harry Maguire saw an opener controversially ruled out.

The result saw Man Utd go top at this stage of the season for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out as champion in 2012-13, giving them a three-point cushion over Liverpool ahead of Sunday’s trip to Anfield.

OPINION: Over? Pogba and Manchester United are still entwined

Not many people would’ve predicted the Red Devils’ position in the table at this point in the season and Neville thinks this season is still about “getting close” to Liverpool and Manchester City for Man Utd.

Neville told Sky Sports: “It’s a big win. I think obviously with what was at stake, to go top of the league before Sunday it feels like a big moment in the sense that six to eight weeks ago you’d never think of Manchester United being anywhere near this position.

“And yet now they find themselves with something building, a spirit growing. You could see with the way they were celebrating with each other that there’s a resilience which has built off some performances that haven’t been at times great away from home, but they’ve won when they haven’t been at their best and you get confidence from that.

“Now they’re starting to play better and the players they’ve got that are really top quality are starting to show that in a more consistent fashion. It’s a little more exciting and I’m really going to enjoy these next few days.

“It’s going to be a huge build-up to the game on Sunday. Liverpool, the best team in the league last season by a stretch and I think probably eight weeks ago, everybody’s absolute certainties to win the league.

“I still don’t think we’re veering away from that too much and it isn’t a moment to get carried away because we know full well how quickly this season has turned around. It was Chelsea three or four weeks ago, City were having a really bad time and now they’re coming to the fore, Liverpool looked strong and Manchester United looked dead seven or eight weeks ago.”

Neville added: “Now it’s all turning round for different teams and different moments and it could easily turn the other way in three or four weeks.

“But it shouldn’t stop Manchester United fans getting carried away in the next couple of days because why shouldn’t they? It’s been a really difficult few years and there’s been times where it’s looked like United are a million miles away from the top of the league.

“To be top and three points clear of a really good Liverpool side in January is something that isn’t expected. If you’d said this at the start of the season to any commentator, pundit, Manchester United fan or even the Manchester United manager…

“This season it was about getting close to Liverpool and Manchester City and they’re doing that at this moment in time and that is what success was deemed to be at the start of the season so we shouldn’t change away from that.

“I don’t think anyone is saying Manchester United are going to win the league but the fact that they’re in a title race… wow, I never would have imagined it and you’ve got to give credit to the players because I’ve been critical along with a lot of other people in the last two, three, four years because the standard has been well below what the club and fans expect but they’re doing really good things at this moment in time.”

When asked whether Man utd can win the Premier League title this season, Neville responded: “It’s a strange season. If you’d said to me at the start of the season, all of us would have said no – no chance, they’re nowhere near the consistency levels.

“But as I sit here tonight, why shouldn’t Manchester United fans believe and why shouldn’t this team believe. You look at that frontline of Rashford, [Edinson] Cavani, [Anthony] Martial, [Mason] Greenwood. You look at the midfield four, you look at Fernandes, who wasn’t maybe at his best tonight, but then Pogba steps up.

“They’ve got some fantastic players and other teams aren’t in great moments. I think City at this moment in time are the ones that maybe are just cool and calm and nobody is really talking about them.

“But City are starting to hit really good form themselves and that may be the real danger. And when City are at the best, as United found out last week, United are still a little bit below but the next few days it’s time to have a little bit of fun.

“I don’t think it’ll be a comfortable few days for Liverpool in the sense that I don’t think they expected Manchester United to be anywhere near them or see them as a competitor or a threat this season. That’s why it can be a little bit of fun for Manchester United fans.

“But I also feel these players believe they can have a really special season. No fans in, it’s odd, it’s changing every single week and you don’t know what’s going to happen. There’s an element of unpredictability to the season and Manchester United could exploit that.”

Burnley 0-1 Man Utd: Pogba volley sends Red Devils top

Paul Pogba fired Man Utd to the top of the Premier League table with a 1-0 win at Burnley.

The France midfielder’s deflected volley in the 71st minute was enough for a hard-earned victory in a match full of VAR controversy.

United move three points clear of Liverpool ahead of their showdown at Anfield on Sunday.

Not for the first time in the evening, VAR took centre stage in the 32nd minute.

Robbie Brady appeared to have brought down Edinson Cavani as the Manchester United forward – back after a three-match ban – looked to get clear around 25 yards out.

After referee Kevin Friend initially showed the Burnley man a yellow card, the incident was reviewed by VAR.

Friend went over to the pitchside monitor to check a potential earlier foul by Luke Shaw on Johann Gudmundsson before the United breakaway.

Following several replays, the referee instead awarded Burnley a free-kick, showing United defender Shaw a yellow card and so the possible red card against Brady was ruled out, with his caution rescinded.

United thought they had taken the lead in the 37th minute when Harry Maguire headed in at the back post, but the captain was adjudged to have fouled Burnley defender Erik Pieters as he jumped.

Just before half-time, Burnley keeper Nick Pope produced a fine save from Anthony Martial’s curling shot towards the top corner.

Soon after the restart, Cavani spurned a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock when he scuffed his shot straight at Pope from close range after being picked out by Bruno Fernandes.

United eventually made the breakthrough in the 71st minute.

Marcus Rashford got clear down the right and clipped the ball back across to the edge of the penalty area, where Pogba sent a volley goalwards which deflected off Burnley defender Matthew Lowton and past Pope.

VAR was again in action during the closing stages for a review of a potential handball by Maguire in a crowded six-yard box, but no penalty was given.

The victory puts Man Utd ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League on 36 points from 17 matches.
