Klobuchar unveils plan to help Alzheimer's patients, caregivers

Presidential candidate Sen. Amy KlobucharAmy KlobucharHillicon Valley: Biden calls on Facebook to change political speech rules | Dems demand hearings after Georgia election chaos | Microsoft stops selling facial recognition tech to police Democrats demand Republican leaders examine election challenges after Georgia voting chaos Harris grapples with defund the police movement amid veep talk MORE (D-Minn.) on Friday unveiled a plan to help people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.

The plan would provide new funding for research into the disease and aims to find a cure and treatment by 2025, according to The Associated Press. It would also create a refundable tax credit to help with long-term care costs.

Klobuchar’s plan aims to put between $100 billion and $150 billion to the credit, which would come from removing tax exemptions for certain capital gains.

The proposal would also strengthen retirement funds and Social Security benefits, in addition to investing in long-term treatments — plans for which Klobuchar had previously expressed support.

The Democratic presidential hopeful said in an interview with CBS News that much of her plan is investing and reaching those goals by 2025. But she said her plan also has caregivers in mind.

“They may be a husband or a wife, or they may be a daughter or son but they’re heroes and they are the ones that are there every single day,” she said.

She added to CBS that the plan is about seniors and “keeping Medicare and Social Security strong and also being able to push on the drug companies.”

Klobuchar is among more than two dozen people running for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination.

She has struggled to gain traction in the polls since announcing her bid. The RealClearPolitics average of polls currently has the Minnesota senator in 11th place among Democratic hopefuls, with 1.2 percent of the vote.

Susan Collins raises $2M in second quarter fundraising, surpassing 2014 reelection bid

Sen. Susan CollinsSusan Margaret CollinsRepublicans prepare to punt on next COVID-19 relief bill Trump tweets spark fresh headache for Republicans Trump’s tweet on protester sparks GOP backlash  MORE (R-Maine) raised more than $2 million for her reelection bid over the past three months, her campaign said Monday.

Collins’s finance director Amy Abbott said in a statement that the fundraising haul marked the first time her campaign had surpassed the $2 million mark in one quarter.

Abbott added that Collins has already outpaced her fundraising for her entire 2014 reelection cycle. She has raised $6.45 million this election cycle and has $5.4 million cash on hand, her campaign said.

Abbott said the campaign “fully expects to be outspent by far-left interest groups this campaign.”

Collins is a prime target for Democrats looking to chip away at the Republican majority in the Senate.

Sara Gideon, Maine’s Democratic Speaker of the House, announced earlier this month that she raised more than $1 million in the first week of her campaign to unseat Collins. Her campaign said 97 percent of those contributions were $100 or less.

Gideon is the highest-profile Democrat to enter the Maine Senate race so far. Collins’s vote last year to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court as he faced sexual misconduct allegations angered Democrats and prompted an intense effort to recruit candidates to challenge the longtime senator.

Other Democrats seeking the nomination to challenge Collins are Betsy Sweet, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2018, and Bre Kidman, an attorney.

Neville names ‘most intriguing story’ ahead of new Prem season

Gary Neville has pinpointed Marcelo Bielsa’s Premier League debut with Leeds United as the most ‘intriguing’ factor heading into the new season.

The return of the Premier League is edging ever-closer, as it is now just eight days away.

There are plenty of subplots heading into the new campaign, with one of those being Leeds United’s long-awaited return to the top flight.

F365 Says: Curse the Premier League and its homegroan-inducing stance

This campaign is the first time Leeds have been in the Premier League in 16 years. A big reason why this return was made possible is the remarkable job done by Bielsa.

In his two years at Elland Road, the Argentinian boss has overhauled the playing style of the Whites. Bielsa has turned them into one of the best teams to watch in all of English football.

Despite having such a glittering career managing around the globe, Bielsa has never had a job in the Premier League. Neville has told Stadium Astro that he cannot wait to see how he does in the English top-flight:

“I think it’s the most intriguing story in the Premier League this season how Bielsa will do in the Premier League.

“I think the first game – Liverpool v Leeds is amazing, I think it will be watched all around the world, but certainly will be a big draw in this country.”

Man Utd and Leeds United have only met on two occasions since the laters relegation from the Premier League.

The first was in the FA Cup Third Round in 2010. Jermaine Beckford scored the all-important goal to win the game 1-0 for Leeds at Old Trafford.

The other meeting came in the League Cup a year later. Man Utd got their payback this time, dispatching Leeds out of the competition with a 3-0 victory.

Neville also looked ahead to Man Utd’s game against Leeds at Elland Road later this season:

“I can’t wait for the game at Elland Road, I think it’s later in the season and I think, hopefully by then the fans will be back in the stadium and we’ll see one of the most incredible atmospheres.”

Liverpool told to pay €45m if they want to sign Sporting youngster

Sporting Lisbon have named their asking price for youngster Nuno Mendes after Liverpool reportedly made contact over the signing.

The left-back played nine matches last season for Sporting with all of them coming after the resumpton of Liga NOS.

Mendes, who has been capped five times for the Portugal under-19 side, only made his debut for Sporting on June 12 against Pacos de Ferreira in a 1-0 home win.

MEDIAWATCH: Thiago ‘twist’ as Liverpool close on ‘like a new signing’

And now Portuguese publication Record (via Sport Witness) claims the 18-year-old’s agent has been contacted by Liverpool.

His representative, Miguel Pinho, told Sporting of the Reds’ interest with the Portuguese club insisting that they want his €45m release clause.

However, Liverpool and Real Madrid – who are also reported to have an interest in Mendes – are not willing to pay anywhere near that clause.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville thinks Thiago Alcantara would prove to be a very good signing for the Reds and “would make them very strong again”.

Neville told Stadium Astro: “Liverpool have been brilliant for two years, but I think it’s hard to win back to back titles.

“Liverpool could do it, they’re an exceptional team, and if they are to sign Thiago it would make them very strong again. But I do think they need that one signing.

“They need that stimulus for the squad, who have been together for a couple of years.”

Wolves, Everton keen to sign former Atletico record signing

Atletico Madrid attacker Thomas Lemar is attracting interest from Wolves and Everton, according to reports in Spain.

The 24-year-old rose to prominence during a glittering couple of years playing for Monaco. Lemar shone during the 2016/17 campaign, as a young Monaco side won Ligue 1 and reached the Champions League semi-finals.

During that season, from his 55 outings in all competitions, Lemar was involved in 32 goals, which included 18 assists.

At the end of the 2017/18 season, Lemar did leave Monaco to join Spanish giants Atletico Madrid for around €70 million.

It has not quite worked out for Lemar in Madrid, however. During his two years in Spain, the forward has scored just four goals from his 72 appearances in all competitions.

Now it looks like Madrid and Diego Simeone are happy to let Lemar leave. According to Spanish outlet AS, Wolves and Everton both want to bring him to the Premier League during this window.

Although they spent roughly £62m to sign him just two years ago, Atletico would be willing to accept a bid of around £27m for Lemar this summer.

The report adds that Potro have already expressed their interest in Lemar, but the player would prefer a move to the Premier League.

Wolves are yet to sign anyone this summer, though they have sold Matt Doherty to Tottenham Hotspur for around £15m.

Everton meanwhile are said to very close to signing James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucouré. All three deals should be finalised by the end of the week.

Ole gives Woodward advice after Mourinho mess at Man Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given Man Utd chief executive Ed Woodward some transfer advice after Jose Mourinho left them in a mess over the Alexis Sanchez, according to reports.

Sanchez joined Man Utd in a part-exchange deal from Arsenal, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving the other way. But the forward struggled immensely at Old Trafford under Mourinho, scoring just five goals for the club in 45 appearances.

The Chilean initially struggled at Inter Milan too under Antonio Conte but he played more games towards the end of the season, scoring four and assisting eight in 22 Serie A games, a far more successful return than during his time at Old Trafford.

MAILBOX: Liverpool are better than Manchester United in every position

His form convinced the Italian giants to sign him on a free transfer this summer but only after Man Utd had reportedly paid £9m to terminate his contract.

Sanchez’s wage at Man Utd was around £500,000 a week after bonuses and now Solskjaer is insisting the club never find themselves in the same position.

ESPN claims that Solskjaer has told Woodward ‘to value dressing room harmony over transfer business as the club continue to deal with the fall-out from Alexis Sanchez’s disastrous move’.

The Norwegian has a ‘desire that United no longer give in to extortionate wage demands’ with Donny van de Beek’s ‘willingness to fit into the existing wage structure’ a huge part of why the transfer was sorted so quickly.

The report added that when he joined in December 2018, Solskjaer ‘found Sanchez’s deal had caused problems in the dressing room as other players looked to measure their value and importance against the club’s top earner’.

Solskjaer is ‘willing to miss out on targets if it means keeping his existing squad happy’ with Woodward backing his stance.

Warren unveils new plan targeting private equity funds as 'vampires'

White House hopeful Sen. Elizabeth WarrenElizabeth WarrenWarren, Democrats urge Trump to back down from veto threat over changing Confederate-named bases OVERNIGHT DEFENSE: Joint Chiefs chairman says he regrets participating in Trump photo-op | GOP senators back Joint Chiefs chairman who voiced regret over Trump photo-op | Senate panel approves 0B defense policy bill Trump on collision course with Congress over bases with Confederate names MORE (D-Mass.) unveiled a sweeping plan Thursday targeting the private equity fund industry, accusing companies in the sector of being “vampires” and vowing to “rein in the financial industry so it stops sucking money out of the rest of the economy.”

Warren, a favorite of the progressive base who built her reputation railing against economic inequities, has made attacks against Wall Street, top corporations and big tech a major component of her 2020 presidential platform.

Under the new plan unveiled on Thursday, which she also introduced in Congress along with other lawmakers as the “Stop Wall Street Looting Act of 2019” bill, Warren would force private equity companies to take responsibility for certain pension obligations of the companies they buy.

The plan would also force private equity funds to assume the debts of companies they buy, while limiting how much in fees, bonuses and dividends they can extract from the companies they purchase.

“We should start by transforming the private equity industry — the poster child for financial firms that suck value out of the economy,” Warren said in a Medium post.

“Private equity firms raise money from investors, kick in a little of their own, and then borrow tons more to buy other companies. Sometimes the companies do well. But far too often, the private equity firms are like vampires — bleeding the company dry and walking away enriched even as the company succumbs.”

Private equity funds typically rely on a business model involving buying companies and cutting costs to maximize profits with an eye towards reselling them at a profit.

The model has come under criticism because it has often led to layoffs or major cost-cutting.

The private equity industry has hit back at Warren’s legislation, saying it could hurt the economy.

“Private equity is an engine for American growth and innovation – especially in Senator Warren’s home state of Massachusetts. Extreme political plans only hurt workers, investment, and our economy,” said Drew Maloney, president and CEO of the American Investment Council, which represents the private-equity industry.

Beyond the private equity proposal, Warren pushed for a slate of reforms she says would help working families.

She vows in her plan to allow the Postal Service to partner with local community banks and credit unions to offer services like checking and savings accounts at post offices and online and adopt real-time payment management technology to expedite the process for banks to process checks, saying she’d appoint governors to the Federal Reserve who would advocate for the changes.

The Massachusetts Democrat has recently enjoyed a jolt in support after a strong debate performance last month and her “I have a plan for that” playbook have drawn the notice of Democratic primary voters.

DNC hauls in $8.5 million in June

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) hauled in $8.5 million in June, the same month it held its first presidential primary debates and $1.7 million more than it raised the previous month.

New Federal Election Commission disclosures show that the DNC spend $7.5 million last month and finished June with about $9.3 million cash on hand.

However, the most recent filings suggest the DNC likely lagging behind its Republican counterpart – the Republican National Committee has not yet disclosed its June fundraising figures but ended May with $37 million cash on hand.

Of its expenses, the DNC spent heavily on setting up events, doling out $221,000 on catering, $106,000 on “event production & site rentals,” $61,000 on “event decorations,” $50,000 on expenses marked as “event consulting” and $19,000 on security.

The poll did not survey hypothetical matchups between Trump and other Democratic presidential candidates.

The survey showed that voters’ opinions regarding a Biden-Trump matchup are unchanged. A similar Fox News poll conducted in June found the former vice president with a 10-point lead over Trump.

In addition to hypothetical matchups, the poll found that 56 percent of Democratic primary voters say that voting for a candidate who can defeat Trump is more important than voting for one who will fundamentally change the way the economy works. Forty-one percent of primary voters said the opposite.

Biden has remained the favorite among the massive 2020 Democratic presidential primary field, though recent polls have shown Warren and Harris as formidable opponents.

The Fox News poll was conducted with Beacon Research and Shaw & Company from July 21 to 23 among a national population of 1,0004 voters. The margin of error is 3 percentage points. Its margin of error is 4.5 percentage points for Democratic primary voters.
