2020 Democrats look to cut into Biden's lead with black voters

Biden and eight other Democratic presidential candidates spoke at Trinity Washington University, a predominantly black school on the northeast side of the city, where they detailed how they’d address the “systemic racism” they said had led to unfair economic outcomes for racial minorities.

Over the past few days, the Democratic contenders have proposed a raft of new policy ideas, from expunging criminal records for marijuana arrests to setting up multibillion-dollar funds to support minority-run businesses.

The proposals are aimed at winning over black voters, a key Democratic constituency that will play a major role in determining the party’s nominee, particularly in the early-voting state of South Carolina.

“We have to stop letting these guys use the divisions that exist in the country, as charlatans always do, to divide the country,” Biden said. “We have a guy in the White House who has turned that into an art form.”

Polls show Biden, the Democratic front-runner who served as vice president under the first black president in history, with strong support among African Americans.

On Monday, Biden said he’d eliminate loopholes for the wealthiest Americans and the GOP’s tax cuts to pay for new programs for the poor. Biden also said he’d cut the military budget and pull the United States out of costly foreign conflicts to pay for new initiatives, such as “universal Medicaid,” free community college and child tax credits.

“We have all the money we need to do it,” Biden said.

Hundreds of activists from all 50 states gathered for the event inside the Trinity gymnasium, where they danced and sang spiritual hymns and advocated for “a national call for moral revival” with a focus on closing the wealth gap between white people and people of color.

The Poor People’s Campaign is led by Rev. William Barber II, a black religious leader whose events have become a must-stop for the 2020 Democratic contenders.

Barber started the “Moral Mondays” movement in North Carolina, which is credited with helping to elect a Democratic governor and cutting into the GOP’s majority in the state’s General Assembly.

Monday’s forum comes as the 2020 Democratic contenders increasingly hone their messages to appeal to black voters. All of the candidates present at Monday’s forum promised to pressure the Democratic National Committee to hold a debate focused solely on poverty and systemic racism.

Sanders described gerrymandering as a GOP effort to “undermine democracy” that is “based on race.”

And he hammered Republicans as “political cowards,” saying they’ve engaged in voter suppression efforts to keep black people from the polls because “they know that if poor people and people of color and young people are allowed to vote they will lose in large numbers.”

The Vermont senator has been criticized for saying that incarcerated individuals should be able to vote, but the crowd cheered as he doubled-down on that point on Monday.

“If you are a citizen of America, you have the right to vote, even if you are in jail,” Sanders said.

Harris spoke about how poor minorities are more likely to plead guilty to crimes they didn’t commit because they can’t afford legal fees.

“This is an economic justice issue as much as it is a criminal justice issue, and it must be addressed quickly,” Harris said.

Harris, the former attorney general for California, also said the U.S must eliminate the for-profit prison industry.

On Monday, Warren, who has been rising in Democratic primary polls, focused heavily on her proposed tax on the ultrawealthy, which she said would be used in part to pump $50 billion into funds supporting historically black colleges and universities.

The Massachusetts Democrat also cast climate change as an emergency that primarily impacts low-earning individuals.

“Environmental issues are poor people issues,” Warren said.

“No one needs that more than people whose livelihoods are taken away, whose clean air is taken away, whose water is destroyed and undrinkable. We have to be in that fight.”

Several 2020 contenders who did not make it to Monday’s forum have sought to speak to African American voters at other venues recently.

Booker, who is African American, has proposed “baby bond” savings accounts worth $1,000 for every newborn child and a plan to make rent more affordable for low-income Americans through housing credits. At the Charleston forum, Booker spoke at length about his time as mayor of Newark, which is among the poorest cities in New Jersey.

Julián Castro, the Housing and Urban Development secretary under former President Obama, released a “People First Housing Plan” on Monday detailing his intentions to expand the housing choice voucher program and create a renter’s tax credit for low- and middle-income Americans.

Last week, Buttigieg released a “Douglass Plan for Black America,” named after abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The proposal would reform credit scoring in an effort to increase access to credit for poor minorities and ban voter ID laws.

Trump also made a campaign promise of eradicating AIDS “once and for all,” adding that “we’re very close.”

“We will lay the foundation for landing American astronauts on the surface of Mars,” Trump continued. “With every ounce of heart and might and sweat and soul, we’re going to keep making America great again and then we will indeed keep America great.”

The man, Eric Logan, was killed Sunday by Sgt. Ryan O’Neill, who confronted Logan while responding to reports of a man breaking into cars.

O’Neill has said Logan approached him with a knife, but he did not have his body camera on at the time of the shooting.

“While the case is still being investigated, we do know this: a South Bend family is enduring the crushing and inconsolable anguish that far too many Black and Latino families across the country have shared,” Buttigieg wrote in the email.

The 37-year-old mayor and presidential candidate went on to discuss the fraught dynamics of the case pertaining to relations between the police and black communities.

“Our city, and our nation, demands answers about the dynamic between our police officers and the communities they are sworn to protect,” the email reads.

“All police work and all of American life takes place in the shadow of racism, which hurts everyone and everything it touches. Historic racism, present-day racism, and generational racism – they all secrete a kind of poison into the bloodstream of this country,” he added.

Logan’s family said in a press conference Monday that he was on his way to his mother’s house from a family gathering at the time of his death and had not been carrying a knife.

In the email, Buttigieg pledged that regardless of the investigation’s outcome, his office intended to seek feedback from community members to address such issues.

“In new ways, we will elicit community input on the policies that decide how the police department does its work – policies on body cameras, the use of force, and the prevention of bias – and we will empower community members to help shape how these policies are put into practice,” the email states.

Buttigieg said Thursday he is open to calls for an independent prosecutor to investigate the shooting. The shooting is currently under investigation by the St. Joseph’s prosecutor’s office.

An independent probe “would be a benefit because it would help verify or shed light on what’s going on,” South Bend Councilman Oliver Davis (D) said, adding that he thinks it would be worth the money even if the city had to pay for an investigation. “Justice does cost, but not having justice costs even more.”

Activist Jan Bauer, who chaired the Story County Democratic Party for 22 years, announced her support for Bullock. She remains one of the most high-profile Democrats in the state and remains popular in Story County, which is home to Ames and Iowa State University.

“In a field of extremely qualified candidates, Governor Bullock rises above the rest as a voice of experience with a proven record of achievement – the leader our country needs to get us back on track,” Bauer, a DNC member, said.

“While others warn of the dangers of dark money, Governor Bullock has actually stood up to the Koch Brothers and those corrupting our elections. That’s the effective, undaunted leadership we need in Washington – and that’s exactly why I’ll be working to elect Governor Bullock as our next president.”

Bullock touted the endorsement in a press release just hours ahead of the first Democratic primary debate, for which he failed to qualify.

“Jan embodies the heart and spirit of the Democratic Party. Her decades as a successful grassroots leader among Iowa Democrats is nearly unmatched,” Bullock said in a press release. “Simply put: I am humbled and grateful to have Jan on our team as we fight to make sure every American has a fair shot.”

Bullock has polled near the bottom of several statewide and national polls, though he entered the 2020 race late to finish Montana’s last legislative session.

Besides Bauer, Bullock has also won the endorsement of Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, one of the most popular Democrats in the state.

Redknapp makes his 2020/21 Premier League title prediction

Harry Redknapp thinks Liverpool will retain their Premier League crown next season despite improvements from other sides.

Liverpool finished 33 points clear on third-placed Man Utd last term as they romped to the Premier League title, finishing 18 points ahead of nearest rivals Man City.

Chelsea, who finished fourth, have brought in Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva in this window, while the Reds have brought in just Konstantinos Tsimikas from Olympiacos.

However, Redknapp is confident that Liverpool will be the team that comes out on top again this term.

“Chelsea have performed well, Man United are getting stronger, Man City are going to try and win it back this year but I’m still going to go with Liverpool,” Redknapp said on Sunday Brunch.

“I think Liverpool look like the winning team to me.”

Meanwhile, Gary Neville recently tipped Man City to win the Premier League but has a feeling that Liverpool will finish lower than the Red Devils this coming season.

Neville told Stadium Astro: “I’m going to go Man City, Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea, but that’s with a little bit of hope rather than science!

“Finishing third last season was a big moment for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. That demonstrated progression.

“I think he has to break that top-two or get close to that top-two and get close to the title.

“To get close to the top-two and win a trophy – maybe in one of the cup competition – would be acceptable. He would have to get close to winning a title by his third season [to be considered a success].

“The fans want to see progression and Manchester United have to continue to progress.”

Wolves close to signing Brazilian left-back Marcal from Lyon

Wolves are on the verge of signing Lyon’s Brazilian left-back Fernando Marcal, according to reports.

Unlike previous transfer windows, Wolves have been fairly quiet this summer.

They brought in Matija Sarkic on a free transfer from Aston Villa, but their first major signing was Fabio Silva for £35.6 million from FC Porto yesterday.

FEATURE: Every Premier League club’s next England man

According to Mirror, Silva could be joined by Marcal as the Brazilian is set to sign for Wolves later this week.

The deal is expected to cost the West Midlands side around £2.5 million once personal terms and a medical have been completed.

The 31-year-old is an exciting player who will provide current left-back Jonny Otto with cover for the forthcoming season.

The move is a clever one for Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as the club sets their sights on European football.

They will need plenty of squad depth after playing nearly 60 games last season. They’ve also had just weeks to prepare for the 2020/21 campaign following their Europa League defeat to Sevilla.

Wolves were looking light defensively after Republic of Ireland international Matt Doherty joined Tottenham for £15 million.

Marcal fuelled rumours of a transfer by following the club on social media recently. He now looks set for a debut season in the Premier League.

Wolves start their campaign away against Sheffield United on September 14th.

They will be aiming to beat their seventh place finish last season, when they lost out on European football on goal difference to Tottenham.

Wolves fans will be confident after they managed to keep hold of star striker Raul Jimenez. The Mexican scored 17 goals in 38 Premier League games last time out, which made him a summer target for both Man Utd and Real Madrid.

However, it now looks like Jimenez will link up with Portuguese wonderkid Silva up front.

Leeds linked with summer move for Barcelona midfielder

Leeds United have lined up Barcelona midfielder Rafinha Alcantara as a summer transfer target, according to reports.

The 27-year-old recently returned from a loan spell at Celta Vigo and could now be offloaded by new manager Ronald Koeman.

He graduated from the club’s academy in 2011 but has never cemented his place in the first team.

Leeds could now make a move for Rafinha in an attempt to improve their midfield options, according to Sport (via Talksport).

The Catalan side have given him a valuation of around £14 million. Leeds are set to dispute this to try and sign him for a cheaper price.

The Brazilian is a creative player who can play in the centre of the park or in a more attacking role.

He would provide competition with midfielders Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich and Pablo Hernandez.

Leeds will be encouraged by the fact that Rafinha has never played in the Prem before and is thought to want a move to England.

Celta Vigo are also in the running to sign the player following his performances in the team last campaign.

Rafinha contributed to five goals in 32 La Liga appearances and became a regular first team starter.

However, the Spanish side has less spending power than Leeds.

Rafinha could become the latest signing in boss Marcelo Bielsa’s summer spending spree.

He’s already broken the club’s transfer record to sign Rodrigo from Valencia for £30 million.

Illan Meslier and Helder Costa have also moved to Elland Road for a combined fee of £21 million.

German defender Robin Koch joined for just less than £12 million. He replaces Brighton loanee Ben White, who recently signed a new four-year deal with the Seagulls.

Rafinha is the younger brother of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara. The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, although it hasn’t materialised just yet.

Bournemouth accept £20m Newcastle bid for striker Wilson

Bournemouth have reportedly accepted a £20 million bid from Newcastle for England international Callum Wilson.

Wilson has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs following the Cherries’ relegation to the Championship.

Aston Villa were rivalling Newcastle for the player’s signature, although they’ve now pulled out of the race.

FEATURE: The Premier League stars entering last-chance saloon

Newcastle have become the frontrunners to sign Wilson, and according to Sky Sports they’ve had a £20 million bid accepted.

Wilson will strengthen manager Steve Bruce’s attacking options in time for the upcoming 2020/21 season.

Bruce’s strikers had a poor season last campaign as the side finished 13th in the Prem.

Record signing Joelinton managed just two goals and two assists after appearing in every Premier League game for Newcastle.

Fellow striker Dwight Gayle scored four times and assisted two more in 20 appearances.

Newcastle fans will hope that Wilson can find some of his form from the 2018/19 season, when he scored 14 goals and assisted nine more in just 30 league appearances.

That form helped him to get in the England squad and made him one of Bournemouth’s standout players in the Prem.

However, Bournemouth struggled during the most recent campaign and were ultimately relegated on 34 points.

That’s left the club with no option but to sell some of their star players.

Dutchman Nathan Ake joined Man City for £41 million this summer, while midfielder Lewis Cook has been linked with a return to Leeds United.

David Brooks has also been linked with a big money move to Man Utd if the Old Trafford club fails to sign Jadon Sancho this summer.

It looks like Aston Villa have lost out in their pursuit of Wilson. The club made two offers for the player this week in an attempt to lure him to Villa Park.

They will now focus all of their attention on Brentford forward Ollie Watkins. The 24-year-old is a proven goalscorer and has been targeted by Villa manager Dean Smith to lead their forward line.

The two clubs are currently clashing over a price, although a deal in the region of £25 million could be reached in the coming weeks.

Toure kicked off Soccer Aid event, issues apology for ‘jokes’

Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has been reportedly removed from the line-up for Soccer Aid 2020.

Toure was set to take part in this weekend’s annual game in support of children’s charity Unicef, but The Sun say he will no longer be at the event.

The 37-year-old is alleged to have ‘boasted he could bring 19 girls to the side’s five-star hotel in Cheshire’ to th team’s WhatsApp group, accompanied with a pornographic video.

He issued an apology of sorts on Saturday morning, explaining that ‘it was meant as a joke’.

‘I would like to apologise to everyone involved in Soccer Aid for an inappropriate joke I deeply regret,’ he wrote.

‘It was meant as a joke, however, I lacked thorough consideration for the feelings of all the other participants.

‘That being said I deleted the jokes within minutes and I immediately apologised to all inside the group.

‘We gather for a good cause and this deviates the focus of the game which is to bring everyone together to help children around the world.

‘It’s sad to see an inappropriate joke I made attract the attention which should be fully devoted to the beauty of the charity game.

‘Regardless of the circumstances, I want to take full responsibility. I am a grown man who should not be engaged in such jokes.

‘I am very sorry for my mistake and wish everyone all the best with Soccer Aid on Sunday in raising awareness and funds for important causes.’

A spokesperson for Soccer Aid said:

“Inappropriate content was shared in a private group text. The message was quickly deleted and a full apology was made to all. Soccer Aid for Unicef has discussed the above with the individual involved and he has decided to no longer continue to participate in this year’s event.

“While it was an error of judgment, it was felt that the behaviour didn’t align with the values of the event and its cause, and it was the right thing for him to step back from this year’s match.”

Ceballos explains why he rejected ‘other options’ for Arsenal

Dani Ceballos has explained his reasoning behind turning down “other options” to join Arsenal on a second season-long loan.

Ceballos impressed during his initial spell in north London to such an extent that Mikel Arteta sought to bring him back from Real Madrid.

The midfielder had offers from elsewhere but built such a connection with the fanbase and manager that Arsenal won the race.

Arsenal ‘in talks’ with Aouar; duo offered in Partey swap

Arteta has already reacted to the deal, Arsenal’s fifth of a solid summer, which will see the Gunners pay no loan fee but cover the entirety of Ceballos’ wages for the campaign.

“It’s true that I had other options, such as staying at Real Madrid and going back to the Spanish league, where there were teams interested in me,” he told Arsenal Digital.

“I spoke to the coach last year, before the final, and told him that I wanted to stay at Arsenal and win titles.

“I’d been really happy with what Mikel had built at the club since he came in. I had a great time at this club last season and there was never any doubt in my mind that I wanted to come back.

“I think everyone will have seen last season that from the moment I joined, I bought into the club completely and always gave 100 per cent both on and off the pitch.

“The fans repaid me for that by showing me a lot of love. When I was at home they were sending me messages asking me to come back and saying that they needed me here.

“I think they’ll be as happy as I am that I’m back and I’m sure we have a great year ahead of us this season.”
