Ceballos to ‘snub Arsenal’ as he opts for La Liga return

Dani Ceballos has reportedly opeted against a return to Arsenal in favour of a move to Real Betis.

The midfielder impressed on loan with the Gunners this season, and talks were said to be ongoing between the Premier League club and Real Madrid over a fresh deal.

But Real Betis are also keen on welcoming the 24-year-old back, and Ceballos himself is keen to rerturn to play in La Liga, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Mikel Arteta was hopeful of securing Ceballos’ services on loan in order to reserve funds for other transfers, with Houssem Aouar thought to be one of the key targets.

When asked about Ceballos’ future on Thursday, Arteta said: “Well, we have some talks and Dani knows really well what I think about him.

“He was pretty clear with me as well that his intention was to remain with us but obviously Real Madrid is involved and I don’t know yet what they want to do with the player.

“But he’s a player that we are interested in because we really saw, in the last few months of the season, what he is capable of bringing to us.”

Greek lawyer tears apart Maguire’s ‘ridiculous’ Mykonos claims

The Greek lawyer who led the prosecution against Harry Maguire has picked several holes in the Manchester United star’s “ridiculous” account of his arrest.

Maguire – in an interview with the BBC – claimed he was “in fear for his life” as assailants hit him in the legs and told him he “he won’t play again”.

It was the United captain’s first interview since he was convicted of assaulting police officers and bribery and handed a 21-month suspended sentence – a decision Maguire’s lawyers will appeal.

Prosecution lawyer Ioannis Paradissis has now taken apart Maguire’s account of the events, and has criticising the 27-year-old for his failure to apologise.

He told MailOnline: “I’ve seen and read what Maguire said and it’s ridiculous and only adds further insult to the harm he caused the policemen he attacked and the Greek justice system as a whole.

“Maguire claims that he feared he was being kidnapped yet his response is to run away and call his agent, leaving behind his fiancé, brothers and sister and childhood friends. Even if you accepted this as true, which I don’t, these are not the actions of an honourable man.

“If I was his fiancé or any of the others in the group, I would be very angry with him for leaving them behind and would want him to do some explaining.”

He added: “Maguire claims that when the minibus stopped, he did not know that it was outside a police station. I would urge all people to have a look at Mykonos police station. It is clearly obvious what this place is either during the day or night.

“There are many police cars parked outside it at night, there is a sign stating that it is a police station and there are officers coming in and outside of the building. The only way you would not be able tell if it was not a police station is if you are very drunk.

“But clearly, he was not that drunk, because according to him he was able to fight off a group of men who he thought were kidnappers and try and escape. If he had the clarity of mind to do that then obviously, he would have also been able to see that the minibus had pulled up outside a police station.”

The football star’s friend Ashden Morley claimed during the trial in Syros that they knew the nationality of the men because ‘they had an Albanian nature.’

He added: “Why didn’t the BBC press him further on this. How did Maguire and his group know that these men were Albanian? Is the Manchester United captain and those with him experts on Albanian culture and people? And do they speak Albanian?

“And in his interview, Maguire makes no reference to Albanians, as his friend did in court and others did in his group? Why is this? Why is thier story now that it was simply two men and noting about Albanians? Why did the journalist not question him further about this?”

Mr Paradissis fumed: “And where is our apology for his behaviour? Three policemen were injured and had to be treated at hospital. A rich man came to Mykonos and thought that he could behave how he wants. He then goes on an international television channel to justify his actions and there is not a single sorry to us in anything he says.”

Man Utd ‘interested’ in Chelsea target; Madrid happy to sell

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Real Madrid star Sergio Reguilon, who could be available for a nominal fee this summer.

The left-back – who has impressed on loan at Sevilla this season – was being targeted by Chelsea before the Blues secured a deal for Ben Chilwell on Wednesday.

The Madrid academy graduate has struggled to break into the first team under Zinedine Zidane, with Marcelo and Ferland Mendy currently battling for the spot on the left side of the defence.

He is therefore being linked with a move away from the Bernabeu this summer, and Zidane would be willing to sell him for as little as £18million – a bargain for a man named in the La Liga team of the year.

With Chelsea now out of the running, Marca claims United are now ‘interested’ in a move for the 23-year-old.

It is reported that his performances on loan at Sevilla – including his role in knocking United out of the Europa League – have left the United bosses sufficiently impressed to consider making a bid.

Juventus, Inter Milan and Tottenham are also credited with interest in Reguilon, who is yet to receive his first full cap for Spain.

‘He downright reprogrammed me’ – Sane opens up on Guardiola

Sane completed a £45 million move – potentially rising to £55 million – to Bayern in July, ending a four-year stint with Guardiola in Manchester.

It had been claimed that Sane was gunning for the exit due to Guardiola’s tactical demands, but the German international has rubbished those reports.

He says he always had the “freedom” required to showcase his “individual quality” as he played his part in helping the Manchester side to two Premier League titles during his time in the English top flight.

“In positional play, in the general perception of the entire game, in tactical behaviour both offensively and defensively – Guardiola downright reprogrammed me,” the 24-year-old explained to Kicker.

“It’s the simple movements that make you think, ‘Oh, never’. But when you implement them, you realise very quickly that Guardiola is right. What he advises helps a lot, it makes the game easier and faster. Tactics are the most important thing to him.”

Barcelona eye £107m Liverpool star ‘willing to replace Messi’

Barcelona are reportedly eyeing a move for Liverpool star Sadio Mane, with the forward ‘willing’ to move to the Nou Camp to replace Messi should he leave.

Messi shocked the world of football as he faxed a transfer request to Barcelona in the hopes of triggering a release clause in his contract that will allow him to leave for free.

The end of season clause technically expired in May, but the Argentine claims the delay to the season should mean it is still now valid.

Should Messi leave the club, there will be plenty of suitors, but Barcelona will also need to target a world class star to replace him.

And according to TMW (via Sport), Liverpool’s Mane is ‘willing to replace Messi’ this summer, with the La Liga giants ‘eyeing’ the Senegalese forward.

Mane had another standout season for Jurgen Klopp’s title winners, notching 22 goals in the 2019-20 season.

The 28-year-old – who has previously been targeted by Real Madrid – would not come cheap, with Liverpool demanded a fee of no less than £107million.

Mane has played under new Barca boss Koeman before when the pair were at Southampton, and has reportedly refused to sign a new Liverpool deal that has been on the table for the last nine months.

Chelsea confirm eight players in coronavirus quarantine

Chelsea have eight players missing pre-season training as a coronavirus outbreak has forced them into quarantine.

The Blues have confirmed that a number of their players have tested positive for Covid-19 and will self isolate to limit the spread of the disease in accordance with Government guidelines.

Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic and Fikayo Tomori are all understood to be in self-isolation after they were pictured on holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos before pre-season training began last weekend.

Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Emerson and Michy Batshuayi are also reported to be staying away from Chelsea’s Cobham training ground.

Chelsea have not revealed which of the eight have tested positive, but The Telegraph report six players have the virus while the other two are quarantining becuase of close contact with those affected.

All the players took coronavirus tests last week ahead of their planned return to pre-season training.

Messi ‘urges Neymar to join him at Man City’

Lionel Messi reportedly wants his former Barcelona teammate Neymar to join him at Manchester City.

Hang on, did we miss something?

According to ESPN Brasil, Messi is desperate to reunite with Pep Guardiola (we think so too) and has urged Neymar to join him at the Etihad.

An interesting turn of events for a player to be persuading another player to join him at a club he himself doesn’t currently play for.

MAILBOX: Messi is a mindf*** for Barcelona and Man City…

Jorge Nicola claims Messi has spoken to Neymar privately about his exit from Barcelona and has urged his friend to quit Paris Saint-Germain and make a big-money move to the Premier League.

Messi is apparently unperturbed by tiny little snags like Guardiola maybe not wanting Neymar, or the club not being able to afford him.

Barcelona chiefs are currently working on convincing Messi to stay at the club after his faxed transfer request rocked the football world.

The 33-year-old asked for his contract – which still has a year to run – to be terminated under an end-of-season release clause which technically ran out in May.

Messi’s intention to quit the Nou Camp came after Ronald Koeman’s appointment as Quique Setien’s successor last week, and some slightly strange comments from the former Everton boss.

Rooney questions Maguire guilty verdict: ‘It’s not his character’

Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has backed Harry Maguire.

The United skipper is set for a retrial after his legal team appealed his guilty verdict following his arrest while on holiday in Mykonos last week.

Maguire was handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence after he was found guilty of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery.

The appeal invalidates Tuesday’s ruling, meaning Maguire has no criminal record ahead of the retrial.

Maguire has received the backing of his club and now Old Trafford hero Rooney has also shown his support.

“Knowing Harry the way I know him, it’s completely not his character,” rooney told talkSPORT.

“It’s out of character, everything that was reported to have happened.

“I couldn’t get my head around how it went to court, he was found guilty and sentenced all within the space of about two hours… how has that happened?

“Harry’s not that type of person at all. He was out there with his girlfriend, his family and friends and their girlfriends, so it’s not a group of lads, where sometimes things happen.

“So, in my opinion, something has gone on that has maybe provoked him.

“It’s just out of character, it’s not him at all. I just think as a nation, as people, we are too quick to judge.

“Obviously he was found guilty and there’s an appeal, so at the minute there’s no charges now against his name until the next court date.”

Rooney is no stranger to the pressure of the spotlight, and was the first to admit on Thursday morning that he’s had his own brushes with the law.

But the Man United legend continued to insist, while he had his troubles in the past, Maguire is not that type or person.

“It’s not easy,” he added.

“Obviously I’ve made my own mistakes and I’ve had my issues with the law, both in England and abroad as well, so I know how difficult that can be.

“But I just think with Harry, he’s not that character at all.

“I’ve also heard people saying why doesn’t he hire a villa and stay in a villa, but why should he? He’s a human being!

“I’ve only ever had security once in my whole career, and that was coming off the back of Euro 2004.

“You don’t think like that, when you’re out with your girlfriend or your wife you don’t think of any trouble occurring. So for me something’s gone on that isn’t right, and as a human being you might react…”
