Germany to make anti-Semitism a specific hate crime as Jews ‘no longer feel safe’

Germany is to tighten its laws against anti-Semitic hate crimes in the wake of last month’s failed attack on a synagogue by a far-Right gunman.

“I am ashamed that Jews no longer feel safe in Germany and that so many are even thinking of leaving the country,” Christine Lambrecht, the justice minister, told German MPs. “We have to send a clear signal against anti-Semitism.”

Under the planned changes, crimes with an anti-Semitic motive will attract heavier sentences.

The move comes after a synagogue in east Germany narrowly escaped becoming the scene of a massacre last month. Stephan Balliet, a German national who released a far-Right "manifesto" before the attack, failed in his attempts to break into the synagogue which was packed with 51  people marking Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. He later turned his gun on bystanders, killing two people.

While the Halle attack was the highest profile incident, it was by no means an isolated case. Just days before, a Syrian man was stopped by security guards as he tried to enter Berlin’s best known synagogue armed with a knife and shouting “Allahu akbar” and “F*** Israel”.

Anti-Semitic crimes across Germany rose by 10 per cent to a total of 1,646 last year, but it is the figures for violence that are most alarming.

Violent anti-Semitic crimes rose by 60 per cent, with 62 offences leaving 43 people injured.

They include the case of an Israeli man who was attacked and whipped with a belt while wearing a Jewish kippah skullcap in central Berlin in April last year.

Adam Armoush, an Israeli Arab who lives in Berlin, is not Jewish but was wearing the kippah in an attempt to prove Berlin was safe for Jewish people.

In the wake of that incident felix Klein, the German government’s anti-Semitism commissioner, issued a warning to Jewish men not to wear skullcaps in public for their own safety. Mr Klein later retracted his warning after a public outcry.

In another case in July last year, a Jewish Syrian man wearing a Star of David pendant was attacked and beaten by a group of people when he stopped to ask for a light for his cigarette in central Berlin.

Anti-Semitic incidents last year also include one an attack on a Jewish restaurant in the east German city of Chemnitz. Masked men broke surrounded the entrance to the restaurant and broke the windows with stones while the owner was trapped inside.

Current German laws recognise discrimination against a particular group of people as an aggravating factor in any crime that can lead to a heavier sentence. But the planned changes will explicitly name anti-Semitism for the first time.

The change is part of a package introduced after the Halle synagogue attack. Other measures include laws obliging social media networks to inform the authorities of online threats and incitement to hatred.

“This is an important step towards consistent punishment of anti-Semitic crimes,” said Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

“With the planned amendment to the law, the federal government is living up to its commitment to fight anti-Semitism resolutely and protect Jewish life.”

“Anti-Semitic offences are not just attacks on individual people of the Jewish faith, they always an attack on our values, on our constitutional state, and on our democracy as a whole,” said Georg Eisenreich, the regional justice minister for Bavaria, where prosecutors recently announced they will prioritise anti-Semitic crimes.

US Navy secretary forced out in row over demoted Seal

The US Navy secretary, Richard Spencer, has been sacked over his intervention in the case of a Navy Seal who posed next to the corpse of a member of the Islamic State in Iraq.

Mr Spencer was instructed to quit by Mark Esper, the US defence secretary.

The dismissal of Mr Spencer is the latest twist in the controversy surrounding Eddie Gallagher, who was cleared of murder, but demoted for having his picture taken next to the corpse.

However the demotion and the decision to strip him of his prestigious Trident insignia was overruled by Donald Trump.

It was one of three cases taken up by the US president, who also pardoned two other servicemen who were facing war crimes allegations.

Mr Trump’s intervention is understood to have upset the Pentagon, with senior figures warning that the move would undermine military discipline.

It had been reported that Mr Spencer threatened to resign over the president’s decision to prevent the disciplinary hearing taking place.

Although Mr Spencer denied that he had threatened to quit, he made clear that he believed that military discipline should be enforced.

"I believe the process matters for good order and discipline," Mr Spencer told Reuters over the weekend.

However it emerged that Mr Spencer privately proposed a deal to the White House, which would have allowed Gallagher to retire with his status as a Seal intact.

It also emerged that Mr Esper had not been told of the proposals advanced by his Navy secretary shortly before the US president tweeted an attack on the Navy for its handling of the case.

“The Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher’s Trident Pin,” Trump wrote. “This case was handled very badly from the beginning. Get back to business!”

Announcing his decision to ask for Mr Spencer’s resignation, Mr Esper said he was “deeply troubled by this conduct.”

“Unfortunately, as a result I have determined that secretary Spencer no longer has my confidence to continue in his position," Mr Esper said. "I wish Richard well.”

Sacha Baron Cohen hits out at social media ‘propaganda’

Sacha Baron Cohen has called social media companies "the greatest propaganda machine in history" for spreading hate, suggesting Facebook would have allowed Adolf Hitler to buy political adverts promoting the "final solution."

The actor and comedian accused Facebook, Google, YouTube, Twitter, and others, of putting business success above the safety of their users.

He called for them to be regulated, and classified as publishers, making them responsible for the fake news they spread, and forcing them to fact-check political adverts.

Speaking after accepting an award from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in New York, Baron Cohen called arguments used by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, that he was protecting free speech, "absurd and ludicrous."

He accused  the platforms, including Facebook, of allowing hateful content because it provoked a response and improved engagement.

Baron Cohen, who is Jewish, said: "Lies spread faster than truth. As one headline put it, just think what Goebbels could have done with Facebook.

"If you pay them, Facebook will run any ‘political’ ad you want, even if it’s a lie. And they’ll even help you micro-target those lies to their users for maximum effect.

"Under this twisted logic, if Facebook were around in the 1930s, it would have allowed Hitler to post 30-second ads on his ‘solution’ to the ‘Jewish problem’."

Baron Cohen said demagogues around the world were using the platforms to appeal to people’s worst instincts, conspiracy theories were going mainstream, and scientific consensus was being dismissed.

He said: "Hate crimes are surging, as are murderous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities. What do all these dangerous trends have in common? I’m just a comedian and an actor, not a scholar, but one thing is pretty clear to me.

"All this hate and violence is being facilitated by a handful of internet companies that amount to the greatest propaganda machine in history."

A Facebook spokesman rejected the claims, saying: "Sacha Baron Cohen misrepresented Facebook’s policies. Hate speech is actually banned on our platform.

"We ban people who advocate for violence and we remove anyone who praises or supports it. Nobody – including politicians – can advocate or advertise hate, violence or mass murder on Facebook."

They also  pointed to recent comments by Mr Zuckerberg about taking down hateful content.

In a speech Mr Zuckerberg said: "We take down content that could lead to real world violence. In countries at risk of conflict, that includes anything that could lead to imminent violence or genocide.

"And we know from history that dehumanising people is the first step towards inciting violence."

He added: "If you say immigrants are vermin, or all Muslims are terrorists, that makes others feel they can escalate and attack that group without consequences.

"So we don’t allow that. I take this incredibly seriously, and we work hard to get this off our platform."

Barcelona to tie down Fati with eye-watering release clause

Barcelona wonderkid Ansu Fati looks set to stay at the Nou Camp as the club wants him to sign an unbelievable new contract.

According to Marca (via Mail Online), Club President Josep Bartomeu will offer Fati a new contract with a £360 million release clause.

The clause will prevent Barcelona’s financial rivals, including PSG, Manchester United and Bayern Munich, from signing the youngster at a reduced price.

The offer is a response to Neymar’s £198 million move to PSG back in 2017. The transfer made him the most expensive player in the world after the French club met his huge release clause, something Barcelona officials didn’t expect.

Fati is seen as a future superstar who will help the club going forward once their talisman Lionel Messi retires.

Bartomeu recently signalled his intention to make Fati a Barca legend by revealing that he wants to keep the player ‘for life’.

Speaking to Sport (via Goal.com), Bartomeu said: “There have been no formal offers but there has been interest from some clubs. Barcelona’s answer has been ‘no’.

“He’s essential for the future of the club. Ansu is not for sale. He represents the academy the players come out of, learn from and consolidate themselves in the first team.

“There are not many players like him and Barcelona cannot sell him. What we have to do is help him in his growth and get him to sign a new contract in the future, so that he plays here for life.”

The 17-year-old has had an impressive breakthrough season at the Nou Camp, scoring seven goals in 24 league appearances. He’s also broken numerous records in the process.

However, his contract will expire in 2022, which could entice Man Utd into a big-money move as they’ve been linked with his signature.

Fati is one of several future stars that the Catalonia club currently have on their books. Central midfielder Riqui Puig has played 11 times in La Liga this campaign and could become a first-team regular alongside Fati in the future.

Giggs cites Liverpool with Man Utd transfers ‘all over place’

Ryan Giggs thinks Man Utd need to follow Liverpool’s example as they try to get their recruitment back on track after years of a “mix of cultures”.

The Red Devils are on their fourth manager since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013 with David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho all having a go at bringing success back to Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now in the hotseat and has led Man Utd to a third-place finish this season with his faith in youth paying off.

Daniel James, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have proved to be good bits of business by Solskjaer and the club, and now Giggs reckons Man Utd must back Solskjaer over the next few seasons.

“[David] Moyes didn’t last a season and the club recruitment was all over the place,” Giggs told the Daily Star. “You had Sir Alex players, Moyes players, then [Louis] van Gaal, with a different philosophy and different players. Then you’ve got [Jose] Mourinho coming in with his group.

“So, you’ve got this mix of cultures but are they really United players? To get rid of that takes a long time. That’s why the owners – and stability – is really important.

“For example, Klopp has been at Liverpool five seasons. Each year he’s improved, but it took him time to get players that he didn’t fancy out. It’s not just about bringing them in.”

Giggs added: “You get cycles in all sports and it’s very hard to stay on top all the time, but now, as a United fan, I look at the United players and I’m thinking: ‘Yes, those are players that I enjoy watching’.

“They might not be winning every single game but they look like Man United players.”

Pundit tips Man Utd to make ‘fantastic move’ for keeper

Former Man Utd goalkeeper Mark Bosnich thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should bring Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel to Old Trafford this summer.

Solskjaer has consistently stuck by De Gea despite the Spaniard making numerous errors this campaign that have led to goals.

There have been rumours that Dean Henderson – who has been on loan all season at Sheffield United – could come back to take the number one spot off the Spaniard but his future is still up in the air.

Johnny Nic: ‘Is that normal or is he especially sh*te?’

And Bosnich, who also played for Aston Villa and Chelsea in England, reckons Schmeichel to Man Utd would be a “fantastic move for both parties”.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Bosnich said: “When he’s playing well, he’s as good as any goalkeeper in the Premier League. He’s won a title with Leicester, he’s been very consistent at international level for quite some time as well. Obviously, when Leicester were in the Champions League he performed very well.

“We don’t know exactly with the David De Gea situation, we saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back him and keep him in the side. There’s Dean Henderson as well, but I think that would be a fantastic move for both parties.

“Even if they decide to keep David De Gea, to have someone of the quality of Kasper Schmeichel fighting for a place with De Gea would bring the whole standard up a coupe of notches.

“Like I said, when he plays at his best which is more regular than not, Kasper Schmeichel is as good as anyone in the Premier League.”

Liverpool starlet confirms 15-word snub of Ramos meeting

Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott has confirmed that he turned down an opportunity to meet Sergio Ramos over an incident with Mohamed Salah in the 2018 Champions League final.

Elliott was also in Kiev for Liverpool’s 2018 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, during which Salah was substituted due to an injury caused by Ramos.

Liverpool and Ramos have shared something of a grudge ever since, and The Athletic claimed in May that Elliott even rejected the opportunity to meet the Spanish centre-half when Real ‘rolled out the red carpet’ in an attempt to sign him a year ago.

James Pearce wrote that ‘Real’s charm offensive included an offer’ for Elliott to speak with Ramos, to which the teenager replied: “No, it’s OK, thanks. I don’t like him after what he did to Mo Salah.”

And Elliott has now confirmed that those reports are “true” that he snubbed a meet up with Ramos over the Salah incident.

“Yeah, that’s true,” Elliott told The Athletic.

“I turned it down because of what he did to Mo.”

Liverpool lost 3-1 to Real Madrid on the night in Kiev and Elliott, who was in Ukraine, has detailed his love for the Reds.

Elliott added: “As a little kid, I just remember the buzz of walking up the steps inside the stand at Anfield, seeing the lights and the players warming up — what a sight.

“My heroes were Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez. I loved watching them. My dad was a big fan of Fernando Torres and we had a big poster of him in the house.

“Me and my dad always tried to do as many away games as possible. We had to tell a few lies to the school and my mum along the way! ‘Make sure you get a nice hotel,’ she would say. The place where we stayed in Kiev in this rundown block of flats was horrendous.

“But that’s part of the fun of being a football fan: following your team wherever they go and the experiences you share with your friends and family. The result wasn’t great but the trip itself to Kiev was brilliant.”
